I like nation-building. Wars aren't really my thing.

I actually kind of think the same way as ThunderHawk. (Are hawks peaceful?) I tend to avoid expanding through war wherever possible, though I'll do it some cases (my Germany earlier in the thread for example.)

My current Canada game. I've gone to war once (for Alaska), other than that just industrializing like a boss.

A story about this game: a decade or so back, Britain and it's allies (aka most of Europe) had a big huge war with some East Asian countries, mainly China but - importantly to the tale - also Japan. The UK managed to relieve China of Xinjiang and Mongolia, and Japan of Hiroshima(?) region.

About a month before I took the screenshot in 1866, Britain declared war on Japan again. Despite being an unciv and missing a very populous region, I've been observing the UK though our alliance and seen Japanese troops, outnumbered and with lower morale crushing English troops like bugs beneath the tires of a monster truck.

Does Japan get some kind of bonus? I don't recall that from my Japan game... I can't imagine that an unciv would have higher tech than Britain, either, though that's not out as a possibility.

Did you start as Britain and release Canada, or are you using a mod that allows it to form or starts out?

And that's a pretty impressive Ecuador

Started as Britain and released before unpausing.

I'm not entirely sure if it gets a bonus per se, but I've often noted that Japan has a massive advantage when it's defending. Perhaps it's got something to do with the lay of the land? Or maybe they just had really good generals this time round. *shrug*

My first game ever. 1.3 unmodded. Playing France. Had a ton of Great Wars in the game. My main goal at first was to simply break up the UK by making them release India and her other colonies but it quickly turned into a rush for land to stay ahead of the UK. And after NGF betrayed me during a great war with the Bourgeoisie Dictatorship of Great Britain (they lost a few times to rebels after each great war, going from HMS to Bourgeoisie to Democracy to Socialist Democracy) I decided to cut them down to size and take the whole Rhineland region.

After a 3rd or 4th war with the UK, France had so much access money and resources (tanks) that they could just devour the countries around them. Infamy didn't matter, most of the other nations didn't want to get involved (although GB and China formed and alliance that was hard to deal with at times). Years of fighting GB yielded almost all of India; it wasn't easy. At times they occupied the entire sub continent, and the French soldiers barely hung onto the southern tip with 400,000 French vs 700,000 Brittish.

There was a lot of diplomatic focus, and I would say we built up an impressive sphere. Allies include: Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador, Chile, Paraguay, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Piedmont, Parma, Modena, Sweden, Montenegro, Oranje, that other boer country, Nepal, that tiny country between Nepal's provinces, Siam, Cambodia, Johore, Papal Congo (sphered, not allied).

I would imagine this might make a good HOI Scenario with the USA (with Mexico, USCA, Columbia, Egypt, Papal States, Netherlands, NGF) GB (with Two Sicilies, China, and Austria. Turkey), and France leading separate factions. There's no communist or fascist states all game, excluding Peru and Argentina, who got mad about all their land being taken. They swapped between so many government forms it was hard to keep track. I think Peru is Communist and Argentina is Fascist. The dividing factor would be that everyone who isn't allied to France hates them. Not sure where Russia would fit in, but they're the ones I'm afraid of. I was literally messing with the US' sphere but I did nothing to Russia; they were sending sizable expeditions to Spain over a debt, I think.

First fascist country: Scotland. First communist: Argentina. Venezuela is in southern Egyptian (and fighting for more). America is in Ethiopia. Paraguay took out Bolivia single-handedly. USCA has eastern Bali.

Almost every province, aside from those in Tibet, Bhutan, parts of Germany and India, are cored. There are a few colonial provinces, but I mass immigration focus and most overseas territory is French.

Great powers France didn't fight with: Russia, Mexico, Ottoman Empire

Nice.

As much as I'm kinda opposed to playing France, (seeing it as something like a long time antagonist in all games, alongside Great Britain) that's actually fair impressive. Quite interesting too. How did the USA get over you though?

I thought quite hard about taking them down to size. Even had troops on the Ethiopian border and we did invade Egypt (US ally). But I was too worried about a NGF, Austria, China, GB teamup while I have all my soldiers deep in US territory. Those 4 and Russia were my main military concerns. US had an impressive navy but I doubt they could have landed troops anywhere.

Also, all the land between Algeria and the Cote de Ivoire region was acquired in a war with NGF that took place between 1934 and November 1935.

Here's my latest game and first as an expansionary power: Serbi Arabia.

I started the game with the goal of forming Yugoslavia, but that proved much, much harder than I'd ever bargained for. I'd have to defeat both the Ottomans and the Austrians to get all of the cores, and though I took Montenegro quickly, I knew that I'd need additional territory and people to ever hope of waging a war against the great powers.

After I secured military access from the Ottomans after a bit of diplomacy, I marched some troops down to Nejd and conquered it. After my infamy had cooled off, I took Abu Dabi and Oman, giving me that lovely map you see there. All in all, I was left with seven regions (Northern Serbia, Montenegro, two in Nejd, Abu Dabi, Oman, and Omani Somaliland) instead of my starting one, but my Laissez-Faire government was ineffective at industrializing them even after I'd added them as states. My ultimate goal was to build up enough military force to obtain Persia, but sporadic containment wars by the Spanish (in which I managed to force white peace) made any extended war against Persia impossible. Without access to their vast population, I knew I would never muster the power to defeat the Ottomans or Austria (the latter of which was growing stronger by the minute), so I abandoned the game in 1915.

I've done some great things in Latin America with immigration, but I never really stopped to think much about where those immigrants might be coming from. Now I know. They come from Serbia. Throughout the entire game I had an emigration problem and sometimes even a shrinking population. Though this was helpful in rapidly turning my colonies into states, it was quite unhelpful for my long-term industrialization. I did get some nice boosts near the end of the game from new oil income, but it was people and not oil that I needed.

You may also find the map interesting. Somehow, and I really don't know how, Austria and the NGF took huge parts of Africa near the beginning of the game, earlier than I frankly thought was possible.

Unfortunately, I never did form Yugoslavia, so I'll have to call my first attempt at a warring state an over-ambitious failure, albeit an instructive one. I know that I'll at least have left behind a very unusual legacy: Serbi Arabia.

Interesting trick the Serbasia one! :p For squashing the Ottomans and Austrians though Russia is invaluable. If the war is to regain one of your core territories Russia will usually stick with it to grant you a favourable peace.

Of course once you've got your three cores you'll have to deal with the OE by yourself for the rest of Ottoman Yugoslavia but if they've lost 2 wars to Russia (and if you've managed to pass a healthcare reform - wonderful stuff those) then the OE isn't too hard to beat after that. :) Just for future reference.

Neat trick with Nejd in this one though. :)

Indeed the trick with Serbia is to use Russia to attack the Ottomans but you probably can't get more than one region a war because they will peace out or take something for themself so you might have to take one by yourself after a while. Then you need some luck and bet big on crushing Prussian victory, other options would be hope theres some kind of spark for France to attack Austria, you basically need someone to destroy everything they have so you can swipe a lot of land.

The British Empire 1861:

I got inspired to start this game by the WC without mods by the end of the game thread.
And I made quite a few mistakes ... such as didn't start a war with NED and SPA for their colonial empire or with the US when they were weak.
The problems I encountered as the UK too few soldier pops and too slow (military, cultural) research in contrast to the "unholy" alliance lead by France (FRA+SPA+NED+SWI+Italian States).
Results of containment wars:
Russia is only a bit strong but lost Alaska to me, after I blockaded every harbour.
Portugal - an ally of Russia - was my punching bag and l took nearly everything from them
France lost everything outside of Europe except Algiers where I couldn't land cause 3 stacks of ~45000 Men each where patrolling the area

My allies are:
China, got them too late in my alliance ... earlier would be better for the war against Russia;
Belgium, Frances main reason for some positive warscore - I should have left them alone since the beginning;
Brazil, is a somewhat nice helper early on but lost too much manpower to useless fighting in the Normandy;
the Indian Minors, who are surprisingly effective in fighting other Asian states & Egypt
random other nations I don't care about or that joint only for a short time Hanover, Ottomans, Greece ...

Greatest foes in the future besides the unholy alliance,
Austria, who took nearly all of Bavaria + Schleswig and Prussia didn't do anything besides losing a hegemony war so I guess in the future Schlesien will be annexed by Austria.
The US, cause they get lots of immigrants thanks to my wars.
