We have a number of economic options that we could use if the diplomatic route fails with Spain. These include-

  • The Nationalisation of Spanish assets
  • A trade embargo of Spanish goods
  • A naval blocade of Cuba that would stop all exports of tobacco. Ships carrying food would be allowed to pass

These are only suggestions but they are a possible route we could go down to force the Spanish government.

•The Nationalisation of Spanish assets

Such nationalization is impossible as the constitution forbids. However there is a alternative that will put the crunch on spain and her businessmen and that is to raise tariffs on spanish goods. As for the naval blockade we must remember how this will impact the cubans which may hit them harder then the spanish. We must present ourselves in a good light to the cuban people and as their liberators not as a oppressor. A alternative option could be the support of cubans that wish to have independance from spain first through diplomatic means and should the cuban people fail to achieve their independance this way then they may take the war path in which case we would have to provide them with arms to do so.

As there have been concerns about our military by some, I shall outline my stand on the issue. I would stand by my former policy of expanding and modernizing the Pacific and Atlantic fleets. Our army is the greatest in the world, it is time to match that in our navy. I would also prioritize to expansion of our Marine Corps, so that if talks break down we may be able to swiftly knock Spain out and take back the rebel leadership before Spain can even luanch her fleet from Valencia. I would also make sure that their are sufficient forces on both coats to protect both sides of our large nation, composed of both Marines and regular Army.

As for Unions, I would not seek to nationalize or place Government control over them. I encourage unions throughout my factories and have worked with them to ensure that my employees are safe while they work. This should be a model for all the factories within our nation, Unions working with the Managers/Owners to ensure that production is kept up while safety if in place.

*Senator Michael Jamous, Virginia*

(Cough)

I want to clarify my position on Spain. I am for the expansion of America, but simply would need a strong motivator considering we are a country still rebuilding from the Civil War.

I see that one canidate proposes to expand the military (Zagoroth). What would you be doing for the Navy and the Marine Corps.

And Colonel Callhan were would these Marine Expeditionary forces be place as well as their areas of operation?

-Colonel Turner
United States Marines, 1st Brigade

I have always supported expanding the army (I don't think there's been a candidate to oppose that for decades). The marine divisions will be moved in accordance of the threat present in its theatre of operation. But a good estimate will be New Orleans/Tampa (SE) Delaware/New Beresford (NE) Portland/San Fransisco (NW) Los Angeles/Hawaii (SW)

...With that in mind I do not believe that allowing the Department of Interior broad power to declare a trade union illegitimate or only recognize a certain trade union for a certain trade in a given area is the right thing to do - you could create a system of coercion, corruption, bribery and kickbacks. (( Think in real life, in China they basically choose which of the various trade unions or private companies that exist in a given province for a certain field they are going to allow to exist, creating a monopoly derived from the state refusing to recognize any of the competitors. That kind of thing is a problem that could happen with that sort of rigid centralized registration system you are proposing. ))

I do not propose a state-run union system. I propose that unions should be registered (like joint-stock companies) with a federal department to differentiate themselves as representatives of the workforce rather than revolutionary organisations.

The "invasive" powers given to the federal government are no less than I would expect to be used in the investigation of complaints about an employer. ((equal representation, equal accountablity))

In exchange for recognition by the federal government as legitimate collective bargaining agents, the unions must allow scrutiny to ensure they are not fronts for criminal or foreign interests. There will not be any bans on unions, only compulsory expulsion of illegitimate members.

I'd have to agree. The Unions should be free. Callahan's idea would lead to government control of organized labor, and that doesn't smell like a democratic and free society.

See above. I ADVOCATE NO GOVERNMENT CONTROL OF UNIONS. I said Organised Labor (Unions, Labor Clubs, etc) will be registered (like political organisations, charities, etc) so that they can be held accountable, as well as gain legal recognition in courts

Some new people are not aware, others have forgotten. The issue of Spanish relations is assisted through existing legislation.

My fellow Americans, you have heard much dilly-dallying from other candidates over the issue of the island of Cuba to our south. Rest assured that under a Wilkinson Presidency you will not see a shot fired, or a blade drawn on that island or any other foreign land.
I believe a question was asked previously on the expansion of American influence, I will continue the great endeavors of previous administrations and work towards bringing the entire western hemisphere under our friendly eye. Colonies should be sought, however only once the majority of reconstruction and re-education has been carried out in our own home. (With the exception of all the Hawaiian islands, Midway and others included). Regarding the vinogradist issue I look forward to their joining the national debate in a rational way, I am sure once the burden of governance is placed upon them they will see the need for accommodation and understanding.

The Wilkinson Prosperity plan:
The need for full employment and expansion of the Factory working class is vital, more craftsmen and clerks mean a more prosperous nation. To that end:
+Subsidies for all factories in states where unemployment maybe a problem
+Expansion of the most profitable factories in states where unemployment is a problem (expansion will be continued until all have work)
+Taxes should be balanced with expenditure, including the need for expansion of factories

The Wilkinson Peace Plan:
+No new naval vessels, save for those already under construction or ordered by the US Govt. Older vessels are to be replaced with newer models then disbanded.
+No new military brigades. Our nation has already far too many brave men under arms. With these fine soldiers at our disposal there should be no need for further
+Decrease the military budget to under 50%, during the war many skilled and honorable men rallied to the flag to defend our nation. They should be encouraged that their valiant actions are warmly regarded by the nation but the truly patriotic thing now is to join the many productive professions of society at large.

No New Wars! Peace and Prosperity, it's the Wilkinson Way

-Edward Wilkinson Governor of Indiana

As an aside regarding the Unions, I believe the men who join them should know what exactly they are joining and as such revolutionaries as described by the Williams government should be barred from having taking executive roles within the unions.

(Circa 1847, 1859 and 1871)
Name: Mr Eamon Callahan (Born 1825)
Occupations:
U.S. Army Engineer and Artillery Officer (Retired Colonel), 1848-65
New England Railroad Union Chairman, 1865-72
LUF Rail Industry Chairman, 1872-77
General-Secretary of the Labor Union Federation, 1872-77
President of the United States, 1877-?
Hometown: Biloxi, Mississipi
Residence: Concord, New Hampshire
Ideology: American Social-Unionism (Democratic Socialist)
Party Affiliation: National Republican (Antebellum), Libertarian (Civil War and Reconstruction), Democratic Party (post-Reconstruction)

Eamon is the black sheep of his Mississipi based family. He was third son of Édouard Saint-Denis, a shipping manager and conservative political figure. Though he spent his youth in the antebellum South, as he grew older and more restless he chose to go to college in the more cosmopolitan North. His family decided he should be educated in Massachusetts so he would be close to guidance of his mother's family. He grew close with his grandfather, a Boston shipping magnate, but he opted to study engineering instead of business. After graduating he was recruited into the U.S. Army as an engineer and was chosen to become an artillery officer. His liberal views clashed with southern politics causing his superiors to repost him to a New Hampshire brigade to keep him from inflaming tensions.
When his father accepted a position in the Confederate government, Eamon took his mother's maiden name in order to avoid association with someone he perceived to be a traitor. He served with distinction in the Army of the Potomac under General Khur and attained the rank of Colonel and brevet command of the 2nd New Hampshire Artillery by the time Richmond fell to the Union.

Once returned from active duty he devoted himself to becoming a leading voice among the social reformists, an informal movement of new social liberals. He opposed violent social revolution and supported the improvement of living standards through political action. He was soon among the founding members of the Libertarian Party, which would mould his advocacy away from the middle class to the working class. When Vandrove and the Marxist-Vinogradists wrested the party under their influence in the 1860 Primaries, Callahan joined Michael Jamous on the New Democrat Ticket as the only way to oppose the lazzez faire attitude of the Republicans to the plight of poor southerners, unemployed veterans and wartime conscription. Although the race was an eventual loss, they came surprisingly close to unseating an incumbent war-time President.

While contesting the 1864 primary, with no radical opposition and a war weary public, Colonel Callahan's ideas of moderate reform and naval expansion had little appeal amongst the party faithful. He was soon defeated by the eloquent oratory of union leader Beukes. During the first Jamous administration, Callahan finally resigned his commission and became a union chairman by the popular request of engineers from his former command. By coordinating and rallying the dispirited New England Railroad Brotherhood, he rose in profile amongst the trade union movement. By 1867, he was prepared to issue the declaration of a Social Unionist movement that aimed to cement the role of the unions as a grassroots support base for Democratic Socialism, and counteract revolutionary Marxist-Vinogradism.

As a newly elected union Chairman and spokesman of a fledgling democratic socialist faction he was resigned to pursuing a support role in the next election. However a surprising endorsement from fellow union boss Beukes spurred Callahan to run in 1868 on a whim. In a surprise to Republican and Democrat speculation he came head-to-head with Christopher Bryan in a close-run but remarkably civil race, with Callahan eventually conceding and accepting his second Vice-Presidential nomination. The election saw the Bryan-Callahan ticket lead the Libertarians to overtake the Republican in the polls and only narrowly lost to the incumbant New Democrat Jamous.

In the spring of 1871 Callahan watched with indignant horror as the police joined in the the busting of striking syndicalist unionists in Illinois. When state governments began the "Bloody May" repression of anarcho-syndacalist groups in the mid-west and the "Little Anarchy" was drawing more and more unionists into the bloody reprisal, he was among those who sheltered the wounded and harboured the hunted. This tragedy would spur his faction to public action in their advocacy of free association, the drafting of the Pittsburgh Accord and the creation of the Labor Union Federation to represent the union movement on the national level.

The Social Unionists initiative in the proposal secured his place as a Rail Union Chairman and Eamon's prominence in the negotiations would lead him to become the inaugural General-Secretary of the LUF on a provisional basis until the next scheduled election. As a concession to the non-partisan nature of the Federation, he ruled out any candidacy in the Presidential Nominations of 1872.

After Mandrake's landslide victory, he was appointed a Commissioner of Federal Rail Infrastructure and used his leverage to keep union-busters out of lucrative contracts. At the same time, the dominant Nationalist-Vinogradist faction dissolved the Libertarian Party as the other factions had failed to support their failed candidate in another swing at the Presidency. Cast adrift from political affiliation, Callahan sought to use the LUF to keep Social Unionism intact by stacking the membership in branches of the New Democrat Party.

This policy allowed him to garner the 1876 nomination and the political initiative to dictate his own election platform for the first time.

Well, I'm going to wait until tomorrow to see if we can get another Republican candidate. In the meantime, here's the world in January 1865:

((A Fairly standard game. At least since you are playing the US thier isn't a ludicrous American Sphere in egypt that stops the Ottomans from retaking thier territorry))

((In my copy ive given the Ottoman Empire Cores on the Hedjaz and the Balkan States. It results in realistic Russo-Turkish wars where the Turks attempt to rein in thier theoretical vassals and the russians side with Serbia and Sometimes Greece.))

((Who are the GP's?))

((Who are the GP's?))

At this point:

1: (Brrr)... France.
2: UK. (We need either these guys or us at top spot).
3: Russian Empire (Mostly due to an unrealistic level of industry).
4: USA! USA! USA!
5: Austria
6: Prussia (We want these guys to switch places with either Austria or Russia at some point in the future).
7: Ottomans, if I remember right.
8: Might be Bavaria. That needs to change if we want to see Germany move beyond the NGF.

Okay. Here's the low-down:

Misters Howard and Hayden are going to lay off each other.
The ASDLP, being a political party started without my endorsement, and more importantly just a continuation of banned parties, is hereby derased from the record as an official party.
The ASDLP is an underground movement that has simply named itself as if it were a party. That is what it shall stay as.
Mr. Hayden would thus be running as an independent or Libertarian.

Noted. Changed party affiliation to Libertarian. No talk of revolution in the whole campaign so the candidacy should be fine. Also, I only respond, never bait.

Furthermore, there is no election for mayor ongoing, as that would be an election outside of the thread conventions and rules.
The holder of the position of Mayor of Boston will be decided by me if I mention the city's mayor in an update.

I didn't expect to win or be Mayor. It's mostly just a way to get the message out and have my character be involved in the game. His perspective on running for Mayor is the same as that of most socialists/communists who run for office, just to get the message out and gauge the level of interest in the public.

And yes, women's suffrage has been reality since the first term of the late John F. Cameron.

PS. We need a Republican Candidate or two!

Noted, must have missed that.

I, Senator Demchak from the Great State of Ohio, am announcing my candidacy as the Presidential nominee from the Republican Party.

Economic Policy: Laissez-Faire/Free Trade. The free market is perfectly capable of deciding how best to rebuild our industry. I would couple this with a slight reduction on taxes for capitalists, to ensure they can create job (say, 5% cut), and the financing of import subsidies to help our domestic industries thrive.

Military Policy: Pro-Military. I would welcome any officer's assistance in employing a concrete plan, but what I envision are two sizable expeditionary forces, in case of emergency deployment overseas. Apart from that, I would advise we take advantage of our railroads and keep our forces evenly spaced out. Naval expansion is crucial to our success in the future, and I would authorize funding for two mighty fleets, with the newest and finest technology available.

Voting: Full citizenship. As the son of immigrants, I welcome the greatest possible expansion of voting.

Foreign Policy: I would demand the return of Confederate fugitives from Spain. If they do not agree, I would first use diplomatic sanctions, trade embargoes, and possibly even a blockade. I would not declare war on Spain unless we were fully capable of achieving our goals. Our men in uniform are tired from a long war, and I would use the utmost discretion to see that it did not escalate. I would also support purchasing lands and colonizing overseas, if the opportunity presented itself.

I now open the floor to any questions about my policies.

Senator Tony Demchak, R-OH

((My stances in game terms would be:
Protectionism (In name only. I support a 1-5% tariff, 5% for a fiscal emergency - 1% as a target)
Interventionism (The state cannot build railroads with L-F, Avindian, and we need to invest some funds in expanding our steamer yards unless you favour paying someone else for our naval upkeep)
Secularist (What's a socialist to do?)
Full Citizenship (Exclusion only breeds contempt, and contempt is the mother of revolution)
Pro-Military (Civil War has thoroughly killed Jingoism it seems) ))

Primary of 1864

Republican Candidates(s):

Benjamin Bachmann (b. 1825), Senator for New York ((zagoroth)). Bachmann believes in continued Radical Reconstruction, and peace in the Caribbean. He promises not to go to war with Spain should he be elected. He does not believe in workers’ rights, as he feels they will halt industrial progress.

Tony Demchak (b. 1815), Senator for Ohio ((Avindian)). Demchak believes in a Laissez Faire economic policy, coupled with a very small tax cut for the rich, so that they can build more factories. With Cuba, he believes it is best to play a game of slow ramping up of the stakes, in order to put pressure on Spain.

New Democrat Candidates(s):

Michael Jamous
(b. 1818), Senator for Virginia ((King50000)). As the man overseeing reconstruction, Jamous promises to continue the policies that have proven most effective in the South, and to follow Williams’ line of negotiation with Spain.

Edward Wilkinson (b. ????), Governor of Indiana ((Ric O’Shea)). Wilkinson is campaigning on a policy of extended education in the South and lowering the demands for homesteading. Wilkinson believes in a peaceful solution to the Cuban question, and promises no more wars of he is elected.

Libertarian Candidate(s):

Martin Beukes (b. 1807), Trade Unionist ((Rogov)). Beukes’ platform is concentrated on labor. Higher wages, shorter days and further expansion of health care and pensions are all on his list.

Jonathan Nightmore (b. 1812), Senator for Massachusetts ((yourworstnightm)). Nightmore is running on a platform advocating progressive taxation, social reforms, and the political isolation of Spain.

Eamon Callahan
(b. 1825), Colonel in the US Armed Forces ((komisha)). Callahan is a moderate Libertarian. He is opposed to revolution, and supports only minor government intervention. He wishes to expand workers’ rights and register Unions with the federal government. In foreign policy, Callahan wishes to create an “Atlantic Wall” against European problems.

-----------------------

Exceptional Situation(s):

None. Just vote for thine candidates, and maybe propose a piece of legislation.
