Hmmm... to bad I missed the primaries (I liked Bachmann), but can Senator Hensdale clarify his views on Reconstruction (since I've skimmed to get this far). As I have read it, he seems to want to completely pull out and leave, which is of great concern to me.

Senator Henry J. Jarvis

(sorry for the absence, just started college)

((Reconstruction is over thanks to my character, and I think all nominees have said they will pull the last remnants of the occupation force out of the South))

((Did this thread...like...die or something? No one's posted anything here in a while...))

((Were all waiting for the update. Thiers just not much to say.))

Long live the People of America! ((obligatory IC post))

Sorry. I had a nasty fever yesterday (not so bad today though), and was bed-ridden, but I'll try to get you the update as soon as possible.

((Just out of curiosity, Frymonmon, will you be continuing your extensive recap ?))

The Presidential Election of 1869

Washington in 1869 was no longer concentrated on workers’ rights. Since the beginning of the war subsidies to Germany, talk had turned ever increasingly toward the United States’ position in the rest of the world. For the potential nominees of 1869, view on foreign policy mattered more than at any time before in American history. Failure to meet the party’s view on the intervention in Germany could make or break even the most stable nominees.
For the Republicans, the ballots were a close call. Ignacio Vallejo was quickly left trailing behind senators Bachmann and Hensdale. Hensdale was abrasive, active and held the room when he denounced again and again American intervention outside of the Western hemisphere. In the end, it was this force of will that secured him the Republican nomination by the fourth ballot.
In the New Democrat National Convention, President Jamous came under attack from Republican-minded members of the party, and briefly contemplated withdrawing from the race as the criticism mounted. However, with no candidates promising to step up to take his place, Jamous stayed as the New Democrat candidate.

1. Sam Hensdale, Republican Candidate for 1869.

In the Libertarian primary, Christopher ran for the first time. His main rival turned out to be Eamon Callahan, who ran under the banner of the Social Unionist wing of the party. With the increasing swing farther left since the return of the Marxist- and National Vinogradists, the section of the party that was focused on the defense of individual liberty finally jumped ship. The Republicans and New Democrats gained numerous new members, and the Libertarians slipped further into socialism and the divisions between the remainder of the party became ever wider.

The Candidates/Tickets of 1869

Election Manifesto of the Republican Party

Presidential Candidate: Sam Hensdale
Vice-Presidential Candidate: Tony Demchak
Republicans! Hear this call to arms! Today, we stand at a crossroads in our nation. The specter of the Civil War is being kept hanging over our heads as a tool to persuade and manipulate the minds of all Americans by using this colorful language. I say this must stop at once. We are not a nation of war-mongers, Armchair General-Politicians, who will willingly spread the evil, vile disease of war across this great country, and even the world! No! I say. We must now band together to work towards a common goal. A goal of shared peace and prosperity. Under my Administration, I have no doubt that together with Senator Tony Demchak, that we will come together. United We Stand, the protector of American Democracy and defender of American Liberty.

Foreign Policy:
"The tree of Liberty needs to be watered from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." I hold this, said by our great President before us, Thomas Jefferson, to be a true and integral part of my foreign policy. I believe that Liberty will find its way into the hears of every single man, woman, and child in this world. When it comes time for them to throw off the yoke of oppression themselves, we will welcome them with open arms. However, under my Administration I refuse to support any alliance with any non-American nation. We are in no place to dabble in the affairs of Europe. Let them fight each other - we are the power of the Americas, and thus we must exert our presence on the American Continents. Joining me to make sure that our influence in the Americas is concrete and we have no standing ties, relations, or alliance with Europe, I have asked Senator Benjamin Bachmann to join me as Secretary of State.

Military:

The military has for to long been used as a political tool. While the President is the Commander in Chief - I see it being no right for Congress and other political offices to meddle in the affairs of the military. They are trained soldiers, they know what they are doing. Self-preservation is their key. Under my Administration, Government will step out of the military and let the commanders take over, they will submit reports for weapons needed and supplies they deem necessary, although not excessive. I will use the military for what it should be - a National Defense Force. We are in no place to order around other countries by fighting! I refuse to see thousands of American lives lost for some Politician who wants to see a better map!

Reconstruction:
Reconstruction is over. Under my administration I will pull out of the South completely, only having normal United States Military bases and armories scattered around like they are supposed to. Any verbal resistance and plot to overthrow the United States Government will land that person in jail. Any armed rebellion in the United States will result in the United States Military rising to protect the Government and the Civilians of this great nation.

Cuba:
Simply leave Spain alone. We have no power over them, and the rebels have no power over the United States of America.

Election Manifesto of the New Democratic Party

Presidential Candidate: Michael Jamous
Vice-Presidential Candidate: Edward Wilkinson

Fellow Americans, I come to you today to ask for four more years as your president. Many of my opponents have tried to smear both my name and my party, but I trust that you shall not listen to these lies as you go to put forth your ballots.

My policies for a possible next four years are:

Military:
My first four years so the complete modernization of our navy at the cost of no new additions to our army. My next four years would see a continued modernization of the navy, but slimed down so that the army may receive attention now as well. A U.S. Marine Expeditionary Force shall be set up as well, and with the creation of the Panama Canal, these men shall be able to strike where ever necessary to protect America's people and territory.

Foreign:

As always, we shall continue to enforce the Monroe Doctrine, particularly in Brazil, where the colonial power of France stills holds sway over the government of that nation. We shall continue to improve relations with Prussia, and send them monetary aid in their conflict with Austria, but no America shall be sent across the ocean to help them in their war. We shall expand our Sphere of Influence into the Pacific even more, with continued importance placed upon the island nation of Japan.

Economy:
With reconstruction finally over, the need to separate the economy of the South from the rest of the nation is over. The national economy shall be left to those who work with it, the big and small businesses across our nation. My administration shall allow things to go as they wish/do, but we shall retain the right to intervene when deemed necessary.

Reforms:
There shall be no more reforms during my administration. We have already achieved a standard of living unequaled throughout the rest of the world, we are truly a workers paradise already. No more reforms may be created, until such a time that sees them truly needed within our society.

Cuba:
My stance on the situation in Cuba shall remain the same as my previous four years. Pressuring Spain through diplomacy until they release the members of the rebel "government" and release the Americans they have taken hostage to the island. War shall only be used as the most last resort, in a breakdown of talks between our two nations.

Miscellaneous:
We shall continue to be a religious haven, allowing members of all religions to come to our shores and cities for an equal chance at prosperity. My administration shall allow every nationality, be they born in America or not, to become a citizen. We shall encourage education to be of a top priority, giving them all the funding they need to provide excellent service for our people.

So please, vote for President Jamous in this election, if you wish for four more years of prosperity and peace in our time.

Election Manifesto of the Libertarian Party

Presidential Candidate: Christopher Bryan
Vice-Presidential Candidate: Eamon Callahan

Social Reform:
The Continuing of Social Reforms started under Jamous, Priorities are to be given to Pensions so that those who have worked their whole lives can enjoy their twilight years without having to toil at their old age. Some sort of Minimum wage should also be implemented. All Peoples should also be free to practice their own religion without interference or discouragement.

Foreign Relations:

We should continue to actively support Prussia in her quest for German unification against France, lest France become hegemonic in Europe and achieve superpower status. Spain should continue to be pressured to hand over the confederate government, but aggressive actions should not be taken unless the Spanish commence hostilities themselves. We should seek to liberate Brazil from the French sphere of influence and expand our alliance across all of the Two Americas. If this is completed, we should seek out new markets in the far east.

Economic:
Capitalists should be allowed to continue to run the economy free of government control, this is what they're best at and their reason for existence. However, failing factories, particularly those that manufacture strategically important goods should be subsidized to ensure the continued employment of the workers. Government investment should be made in the railroad infrastructure but the prerogative is with the capitalists. A small measure of stock reform where enterprises employing 1000 or more workers are required to award 10% of their stock to their workers should be pursued. Industrial monopolies are counter to our policy of economic competition and will be broken up with an equitable division of stocks among investors and the workers' stocks should follow their new company. Cartels, or conspiracies by the leaders of more than one company in an industry engaging in such activities as price fixing and suppression of supply shall be legislated against. Trade should ideally not be hindered by government tariffs.

Military:
The Military, as a large scale employer should be funded with priority given to the navy. With our Growing international responsibilities to our American and European allies we need a powerful navy to be able to project power at significant distances. Land forces should either be expanded with a secondary priority or kept stable depending on budgetary constraints. The creation of viable Marine expeditionary divisions to project power in the South Pacific and Caribbean is also a priority.

Miscellaneous:

Immigration should be encouraged but not at the cost of maintaining a high level of literacy and education. As evidenced by the decrease in disorder in the southern states reconstruction should officially end and the Military occupation forces be withdrawn from the South. care should however be take to ensure the negro residents do not fall back into ignorance and Servitude. If the Confederate Government is repatriated I propose a special trial using 100-person jury with all cultures, peoples, and ethnicities within this great nation making up over 1% of the population represented. These people will be chosen randomly from the latest census data. Such a unique Jury will allow the American People to decide both guilt and appropriate punishment. The Judge will be the Most senior Supreme Court Judge, Mr. Bob.
