[Forum Game] - World in Revolution: 1900

The Japanese Empire of the East does not base its politics on the articles of newspapers, and has numerous times stated its reason for invading Korea. We were just using the news paper article to point out that the Russians are not the moral crusaders many perceive them to be, rather they are acting on their own interests. Furthermore, it is ludicrous to believe that our agents would be able to set up a massive propoganda campaign in such a tightly controlled area such as Russian-Occupied Korea.

We are not allowing reporters into Korea because this war, a concept your nation seems incapable to grasp given your numerous defeats on multiple fronts. We will be happy to let reporters back into Korea once this conflict has resolved. Also, we find it ironic that you would call our nation backwards, given our numerous adavantages over you in medicine, warfare and industry.
 
The Kingdom of Serbia would like to inform Japan that there is such a thing as War Reporters, people who report on a war. They cover the events in a war. They present it to the people. This concept first appeared during the Crimean War which was fought from October 1853 to February 1856. That such a country as Japan has not heard of this concept is not surprising to us.

Furthermore, we are confused as to what this "Russian-Occupied Korea area" is that the Japanese are referring to. I take it that the Japanese have not heard of such a thing as an alliance, which would not be terribly surprising, seeing as they lack knowledge of other manners important in international diplomacy.

Italy attempt to civilize Ethiopia was quite successful, no? It's clear that Japan doesn't want to civilize Korea, one civilize a nation by constructing libraries, schools, hospitals and roads, not by invading, killing it's people and then drain if from it's resources.

Also, Italy already has to answer for the crimes committed in Ethiopia.

As a matter of fact, Russia would like to know Ethiopia stance towards the actions committed by Italy in their country in their last war of "civilization"

The Empire of Ethiopia would like to answer the Russian representatives that Italy's last war had nothing to do with civilization. It was a mere gratuitous aggression that costed the lives of thousands directly and even more indirectly, not counting the vast material losses. Despite their most humiliating failure in battle the Empire of Ethiopia was kind enough to grant the Italians lands in order to maintain peace and friendship, only to be recently repaid by the genocide of our peoples, followed by absolutely no action taken against its perpetrators nor a single guarantee or reparation. Certainly they have no authority at all when the subject is "civilization".

The amount of imperialistic nations attempting to invade and subdue these many smaller nations by way of slaughtering their populace and destroying their cities and abilities for production and development is very displeasing. Something must be done about this, and that 'something' does not include war *cough cough*. I, as King of Spain, send my condolences to both the people of Ethiopia and Korea. Should our economy recover in the near future, economic aid shall be sent to both nations (providing both nations exist as independent states).

The Swedish Government find ourself in a state of severe worry. Clearly, some form of virus, a symptom of which is coughing, has attacked many European heads of state.

We feel that urgent action must be taken to counter this, and should ask that organisations such as religious bodies and nations such as Russia stop starting conflicts and harassing small children and instead turn their attention to combating this problem.​

Europe​


In London, the British Government approves a measure to try and create a new automobile factory on the outskirts of the city in one of the dirtier suburbs. Although the costs ramp far out of control, an automobile factory, for the Government only, is constructed and slowly starts to churn out automobiles. In the early hours of January 17th, Victoria, by the Grace of God, Queen of the United Kingdom and Empress of India, passed away at the age of 82 in London. Her successor was Edward VII, her son. The Parliament, moved by the Queen's passing, ordered that a new statue be erected in London, enshrining the Queen in a majestic pose, confident in the future. Over her reign, the Empire had expanded and become the strongest nation on the face of the planet. However, with the United States rising across the Ocean, the days of British dominance seemed to be numbered. The public still cheered this new statue and stability soon returned to the Empire. The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom announced that, to better coordinate things between the Royal Navy and the Royal Army, a new organization had to be created to seamlessly weave the two factions together to effectively defend the British Empire. The Committee of Imperial Defence formally came into existence on July 7th, 1902, and it quickly set out to help the Navy and Army. The United Kingdom also passes a few laws geared towards colonial industrial expansion and improvement, but to mostly no avail. However, in South Africa a new railway is constructed from Cape Town to Kimberley, greatly improving the speed of transportation between the two cities. In Germany, a massive strike at several factories in the Rhur Industrial Area, staged by German Socialists, cripple the German Arms manufacturing ability. Soldiers fighting in Russia no longer receive new weapon replacements, and all heavy artillery production is stopped. Little progress between the Workers and the Owners is achieved. The French Armed Forces undergo a massive demonstration, with drilling and training taking place. Along with this, the purchase of new weapons for the French Army help the development of a new, secret strategy that they keep heavily guarded and secret from the world's observers. A joint Russian-French venture perfects the idea of using Chlorine Gas for military usage. However, once this method is revealed to the public, hundreds assault it as a horrible and unneeded method of waging war. Both nations, after suffering on the international scale, shelve their idea of chemical warfare. (-20 Prestige from France. -20 Prestige from Russia.)

Coming off the Chlorine Gas incident, the Russian Empire and the French Empire sign an agreement, where the French loan the Russians millions of dollars to help fight the Germans, as well as military advisers to help the Russian Army. The German High Command focuses on a new strategy for beating back the Russians, however the recent strikes in the Rhur stop all progress they make, as one of their main strategies revolved around the usage of heavy artillery and newer weapon replacements for German soldiers. All existing weapon stores are nearly used up for the second round of soldiers sent off to the Russian Front to fight for the Kaiser. [+850,000 Conscripts to Germany.]

Italian officers arrive in Berlin, and begin to be trained by German officers. The knowledge and skill is soon passed down to the Italians, who, after their training is complete, will return to Italy to try and initiate reforms and streamline command. [+1 Army Level to Italy in 2 turns.]

In German-occupied Poland, the German Army quickly connects German railways with old Russian ones, streamlining the transportation grid. While at the same time they strung new telegraph wire, allowing for quicker communications and a better infrastructure overall. [+1 Infrastructure to the German Empire. -5,000 Gold from Germany.]

As the spring settled in on the Russo-German Front, the Germans started to pound heavily away at the Russian lines. A pincher movement from the North and West was able to trap and encircle a Russian Army, that surprisingly fought until the very end, being completely starved of supplies, but still dealing the Germans a massive number of casualties. [-350,000 Conscripts from Russia. -150,000 Conscripts from Germany.]

With the collapse of the Russian 3rd Army, the Germans advanced into Russian territory faster than the Russians could retreat. The German's supply lines slowly got longer and longer, with the logistics becoming more and more strained, with the Russians consolidated and reorganized. As the Germans probed the frontlines for any signs of weaknesses, the Russians simply melted away and were told to retreat further back. This contributed to a huge advancement into Russian territory, until the Winter came. The Russians unleashed a surprising volley of attacks and assaults. Although they were able to gain some ground back, they overall did nothing more than help to bleed the German Army. The Russians were surprisingly effective, achieving near parity with the German dead in almost every single battle. [-400,000 Conscripts from Russia. -350,000 Conscripts from Germany.]

In the Baltics, the German Army advances against nearly no resistance, with some citizens even rising up to help the German invaders. It wasn't until the German Army was half-way through Latvia that a Russian Army brought its guns to bear upon the German Army. Fighting was intense and brutal, with a general stalemate between the two sides occurring, with the Germans still holding the initiative. 2. Frontlines of the Russo-German Theatre of War.​

In the Black Sea, the Germans quickly establish Naval Supremacy by closing off the Bosporus Strait and bombarding and shelling Russian ports. All ships, military and civilian traders, are turned away from entrance into the Black Sea, effectively cutting off all trade with Russia.

In German-occupied Russia, Russian Partisans rise up against the Germans using captured arms, greatly endangering the German supply lines, and bringing the German soldiers dangerously close to not having any replacements for their rifles. A large detachment of soldiers is disengaged from the front to deal with the new Partisan Army, which swears allegiance only to the Tsar. [+45,000 Conscripts to Russia.]

In St. Petersburg, the Tsar announces that the second round of Mobilized forces is a huge success, however, some of them are unfit for military service due to inadequate supplies available for them. [+1,000,000 Conscripts to Russia. Supplies Low in Russia.]

The Tsar also comes forward to his people, asking them to donate to the Government in order to fund its war-time functions. Many nobles see this as begging for money to run his reformist regime, while many peasants have nothing to give. Neither of them are able to contribute to the Government, as it slowly sinks deeper and deeper into debt.

The Baltic Sea is a hotbed for action as Russian mines continue to sink German ships. Small, agile craft escape from Russian-held ports in the middle of the night and plant several explosive devices on suspected paths of German ships. This method is highly effective as the German Navy performs blockading operations. [-2 Large Ships from Germany. -3 Small Ships from Germany.]

The Military Academy at Moscow is created in late 1902, in hopes of gathering information and data from all of the wars Russia is currently engaged in. Mistakes by Russian Officers and general tactical failures are scrutinized, and a new strategy is slowly being formed, day by day. [+1 Army Level to Russia in 1 turn.]

In Sweden, trade between the Low Countries and Scandinavia soon starts up as three three nations of Sweden, Belgium, and the Netherlands all enter into a trade agreement with each other, fostering economic ties between them. [+100 Trade to Sweden (+100 Europe). +100 Trade to the Netherlands (+100 Europe).]

A Union between Sweden and Norway is rejected by the Norwegian Government. They cited increased attempts to try and gain more autonomy, and did not feel setting up a stronger Union between the two countries would be the best path at this time. They do, however, agree to adopt a single currency shared with Sweden. Although they are technically under one country, the Norwegian Government feels that the idea of holding two currencies at the same time is not the best course of action.

The Swedish Government announces a simple naval expansion, noting that it is nothing really worth going into detail, and leaves out most of the specifics of their new plan. [+20 Small Ships to Sweden in 2 turns.]

A single Scandinavian currency is rejected by the Danish Parliament, on grounds of wanting to maintain their own sovereignty over their money. They also sent a stunning message to the Swedish King, that so long as the current Party hold a majority in the Danish Parliament, they will resist attempts for Sweden to expand their influence in the country. Still reeling from the Prussian attack years before, Denmark was fully interested in keeping to itself and warding off outside invaders.

New Railways and better roads are laid down in Sweden, connecting some of the new industrial bases with major cities. This new initiative greatly helps the ability to move goods around the country, and the Swedish Government decides to foot the entire bill. In the Netherlands, the Queen announces that a new education initiative is to be undertaken, giving more children access to Dutch Schools, and reforming the curriculum. These changes, though subtle now, should become massive improvements in the future. [+2,500 Base Income to the Netherlands in 6 turns.]

A new tax system is implemented in Spain, where taxes were reduced slightly, but collected from more people in the country. After this reform, nearly everyone in Spain was paying taxes to the Spanish Government. However, this meant that small towns, once overlooked for taxes, were now being taxed heavy sums, sending some of them into depression. Although Government revenue went up, the economy slumped a little. [-50 Base Income from Spain.]

King Alfonso XIII decides to ravel the countryside, trying to rally up the support of the people, and at least make sure they still supported the government and were not so depressed over the current state of their country. His encouraging words lifted the spirits of some Spaniards, as they came together to once again support the Government. [+1 Stability to Spain.]

A deal between Spanish industries and the Government quickly falls apart amid concerns that the Government was trying to take 20% of the company's profits, on top of the taxes they already take form them. The Business owners flat our reject the proposal when it hits their desks, and the Spanish Government quietly retracts it.

Spain formally signs the Treaty of Paris, entering into the Entente.

Propaganda about the Danubian Federation's new future spread throughout the country, with thousands and thousands of unhappy minorities, notably Hungarians, they begin to realize that maybe it was finally for the better. Although Hungarians lost a significant amount of influence, only the nobles lost, and many of the commoners gained from it. [+1 Stability to the Danubian Fed.]

Kaiser Franz Joseph I, in Vienna, gave a speech glorifying the Danubian Federation, making it seem as if it is the biggest advancement that Austria has seen in years. He noted that it has come to terms with the outside world, and has changed and adapted, like Austria always has in the past. It is met with a warm reception. [+1 Stability to the Danubian Fed.]

Škoda Works in Bohemia is given massive Government investments in a bid for it to expand its operations and open new ones. The most significant expansions are in Slovakia and Transylvania, where new factories, military in nature, are opened and built for the Government. The Italian Government deems it necessary for industry to be constructed in Southern Italy, around a few towns where no such facilities exist. The incentive pays off massively, where some communities agree to build their own factories for every factory the Government builds in their town. This starts off a mini-boon of industrial expansion in Southern Italy. [+20 Industry to Italy in 3 turns. -15,000 Gold from Italy.]

The heavily corrupt Government of Sicily is almost ousted by Government regulators before a bribe comes in from the Sicilian Government. In exchange for immunity, each member of the Italian Parliament is given a summer house in Sicily and a large sum of money. In doing so, they also block an initiative by the King to try and make sure the Army came first in all things, including Payroll and Resources. The Parliament struck down that measure almost unanimously.

In Greece, the King gives a speech in Greek-occupied Gijrokaster, in a bid to try and shore up support and promote the idea of a Greek state that expands all over historically Greek lands and occupied by Greeks. The idea gains support inside Greece, but hundreds of Greek soldiers in the Albanian Army still fight on. [+1 Stability to Greece.]

Supplies arrive in Northern Epirus to try and rebuild and improve existing infrastructure. Some was damaged by the war, and even more was in horrid shape because of the Ottoman's mismanagement. After pouring in thousands of dollars, the Greeks in the area start to warm up to the Greek government. [-3,000 Gold from Greece.]

Various ports around Greece are expanded and made larger due to Government subsidies. Although expensive in nature, the improvements overall helped the Greek economy. [-1,000 Gold from Greece. +20 Base Income to Greece.]

With Albania refusing to sign the Treaty of Rome, fighting escalated between the two sides. Small detachments of Italian soldiers make it to Albania, where they are greatly appreciated and accepted. However, Greek forces to the South quickly capture Vlores in a brutal fight, one that ends badly for the Italians and the Albanians. The Greeks sustain nearly half the casualties as the Italio-Albanian Army. [-25,000 Conscripts from Greece. -45,000 Conscripts from Italy.]

As the days pass, the Italians and Albanians are systematically pushed back, losing control of the inland areas, and losing control of ports to join Serbian and Montenegrin forces. Serbia orders that these ports be fortified, and no more Italian soldiers, barring an amphibious assault, can be made. With supplies cut off, the Italians and Albanians are forced to forage for supplies and food, pillaging towns and villages. The cost was placed under the occupational control of Greece and Serbia, while they both moved inwards to try and capture the Italian forces. However, the Italians dug in around the city of Tirana, creating trenches and heavy gun encampments. Serbian forces assaulted these positions, confident in their ability to breakthrough. Fighting was heavy, and high casualties were sustained throughout the entire battle. On the sixth day, with new support coming from Montenegro, the Serbians breached the Italian lines and crushed them, causing the entire remaining Italian Army to surrender to the Serbians. 4. Serbian forces overrun Italio-Albanian positions.​

With Vlores captured, the Italians try a last, ditch attempt to try and break the Greek lines and allow supplies to freely flow once again. The Italians, although severely bloodied by fighting Serbia, still had enough in them to destroy the weaker Greek forces. The Greek Army melted away from the rapid, desperate onslaughts by the Italian Army. The effect was devastating and immediate. Vlores once again changed hands to the Italians, while the Greeks retreated to the South, what was left of their forces. The great idea of a Serbian victory rallied close to home, as thousands of Serbians cheered for their King as he passed, Serbia was once again seen as a powerful nation, destroying the Italian Army as it tried to snatch the hard-earned victory from their hands. The King trumps this up, and pulls the Serbian people closer together. [+1 Stability to Serbia.]

The lands that Serbia currently occupies is slowly integrated into the country, with local governments being set up and the tax system implemented. [+20 Base Income to Serbia.]

The second round of mobilization hits Serbia and Greece, but the results were very discouraging and met with a lukewarm response at the highest levels of command. [+35,000 Conscripts to Serbia. +15,000 Conscripts to Greece.]

The Bulgarian High Command, modeled after the German one, is organized in Sofia with Nikola Zhekov as its head. He promised a top-down reform of the military system and better organization. This helps the Bulgarian army immensely. [+2 Army Levels to Bulgaria in 2 turns.]

In the ruined areas of Macedonia now under Bulgarian control, the government authorized a sizable chunk of money to be released to help rebuild and to hand out to families in need. It successfully helps some families rebuild and form a semi-functioning economy. [-1,500 Gold from Bulgaria.]

The foundation of the Sofia and Kavala Railroad was designed to function as a link from the transportation hub of Sofia to the port town of Kavala, further allowing goods to freely flow from the interior of the country to the port, and out into the world. [+1 Infrastructure to Bulgaria in 2 turns. -1,500 Gold from Bulgaria.]

In the Kingdom of Romania, trade is established with Krupp industries, bringing in high quality armaments for the Romanian army. Envoys are sent to other European nations to search for trading opportunities; while nothing concrete is settled, many countries indicate that they would be willing to trade. Informed by government propaganda that wearing a spiffing military uniform would increase their chances of romantic success, thousands of young men volunteer for the army. Women protest against what they claim is sexual discrimination, but each of them admits that the sight of a man in uniform makes them flustered. The King personally takes efforts to encourage the development of the nation; a modern trading hub in Constanta, and expansion of mining facilities. While the King’s support ensures that the development goes ahead, it will take several years before either are complete. [+700 base income in 3 turns, -1,500 gold from Romania]

Realising the necessity for a strong rail network, Romania encourages it’s capitalists to create new railways connecting each of the major cities. [+3 infrastructure to Romania, -2,000 gold from Romania.]

North America​


In Cuba, the United States and German Empire sign a previously secret Naval Agreement, in which the German Empire gave the United States 11 Million Dollars for the sale of older ships of the United States Navy. The formerly American ships silently leave Guantanamo Bay flying the flag of the German Imperial Navy. In Charleston, South Carolina representatives from the Danubian Federation sign a trade agreement with the United States of America, further fostering trade between the two nations. [+50 Trade Balance to the USA (+50 Europe). +50 Trade Balance to the Danubian Fed. (+50 North America).]

The United States, on the brink of running out of money to use, asks JP Morgan for a loan to help run the Government. He agrees, but only to a 25% interest rate. The total sum of 150,000,000 is transferred from the House of Morgan to the United States Government. [+150,000 Gold to the USA.]

To try and shy away from the ordeal with JP Morgan, President Roosevelt announces that the Congress recently passed his National Monuments and Parks Bill, which allocated funds for the establishment of pristine parks and national monuments. This preservation of the natural beauty of the United States shines greatly upon them, at home and abroad. [+1 Stability to the USA. +25 Prestige to the USA. -10,000 Gold from the USA.]

By orders from President Roosevelt, United States Attorney General Philander Knox starts to gather information on the recent Northern Securities merger, as well as several other "Bad Trusts" that Teddy Roosevelt deemed to be detrimental to the country. Although many figured that this was just was a scare tactic used by the administration, and they would eventually just ask for a few words to be removed in their contracts for mergers, some business owners started to fear for the worse, and slowly take measures to appear not like a trust.

In Western Pennsylvania, Anthracite Coal miners go on strike, just as the Fall is about to set in, causing thousands across the North East region to protest the strike, because of the possibility of a huge loss of heating fuel. President Roosevelt calls a conference in Washington between the Strikers and the Coal companies. Little progress is made, and the workers go back to work once a few demands of their are met, and both sides agree to a deal. This display of diplomatic power bolsters the President's already soaring popularity.

President Roosevelt finishes the year of 1902 by signing a trade agreement with the Republic of Chile, giving the United States even more markets to export their goods. [+50 Trade Balance to the USA (+50 South America).]

South America​


The Colombian Civil War recived a strange turn of events. The Conservatives and the Pacifist have signed a fragile alliance to face their common enemy, the Belicist. How long will this alliance last is not know as members of each factions have a hard time working together.

By now the war has started to change the country, the economy has cooled down due to the fact that many men are at the front fighting while people just want their lives to return to normal. Industries need workers to operate their machinery and farms need farmers to take care of fields and livestock.

Though the Belicist faction is keeping up the spirit, their determination and courage hasn't falter a single bit since the conflict started, they will only rest when the country is under their control or when they are laid to rest. Their vision of a militarized Colombia turned into a great regional power scare both Brazil and Venezuela.

The amount of men needed in all fronts have forced leaders of all factions to take a drastic and desesperate tactic, to employ children in the front as soldiers. Children now learn how to use a gun before they learn how to read and do maths.

The Belicist decided that the best way to deal with a problem is to face it head to head. They have sent their main army to lay siege and assault Bogota, that without external help is doomed to captured in few months ahead. With each week the Belicist Army goes closer and closer to the city limits.

While in Bogota the siege carries on, through the rest of the country only small skirimish in small towns and roads happen. This is due to the fact that most armies are waiting for the result of the battle of Bogota so they know when is time to attack or retreat.

The navy of the United States has started a blockade on Colombia to avoid the importation of war material. Sadly, the captains of the ships, thinking no ship would dare pass through, did a lousy job in keeping trade vessels from passing through and there were even some cases of captains selling ammunition from their ships to Colombians to get profit!

The Argentinean government has decided to help local businessmen to develop their companies. Among these, the most "fortunate", thanks to friends and connections, was Nicolás Mihanovich, who obtained half of the funds intended for the national project. Though consider by many as an act of corruption, the financial genius of Mihanovich puts that capital into work and soon Mihanovic Shipping Co. is expanded into the biggest shipping company in Latin America. Furthermore with the remaining capital is used to develop the most modern shipyard in Latin America allowing the group to dispanse with the outsourcing of repairs. President Julio A. Roca has been working non-stop to regain popularity and support to keep himself in power. Though most people in Argentina wishes for reforms and new air of political ideologies, the Old Guard in the Army, compromised by the most senior officers, being his comrades at arms during the Conquest of the Desert in 1888 are loyal to him without question. In an attempt to promote immigration, the Argentinean government has subsidies passages to Russian people. Soon dozen of thousand of people began arriving to Argentinean ports, some remain in Buenos Aires while other began moving through the rest of Argentina towards Cordoba, Santa Fe, Entre Rios. After the failure to receive a big influx of money from the USA government, an investigation starts in Argentina to find the people responsible from stealing all the money. Clues goes to important members of the society, nevertheless the investigation continues with many arrest that cause commotion in the Argentinean society. The oligarchy class seeing their position, status, property and secrets under watch by Roca and the militars soon start having clandestine gatherings. Word goes through the streets that something important may occurs soon. [-2 Stability to Argentina.]

In Brazil a massive vaccination campaign carried by Osvaldo Cruz turns out to be a complete success. People though initially scared by the idea of a liquid injected into their bodies by a sharp needle changed their mind when government representatives teach them about the concept of antibodies and how vaccines help them prevent mortal diseases. Those who resisted after this were forced to get vaccinated. Though they got angry at being forced to be pinched by a needle, afterwards they realized there was nothing wrong and their health improved. Now that people know the benefits of vaccines, vaccination is made obligatory to newborns. [-$100 gold, +1 push/pull, +1 Stability to Brazil.]

Another major project is started in Brazil. Headed by Perreira Passos the intention to make Rio de Janeiro look more like a modern European city. The project began with the destruction of favelas and planning of huge buildings. Too bad that politicians though money would better serve the people of Brazil in their own pockets rather than to develop the city. At the end due to lack of funds the project is cancelled, but poor people is left in the street with no home and no money to rebuild their houses. Soon people began organizing and local leaders incited them rebel themselves against government. The most important politicians of Rio de Janeiro, fearing his life and property will be soon at hands of the poor people call quickly an emergency meeting, they have to decide if they will call for the police or the army to stop this rebellion before is too late. [-$2000 gold, -1 stability, high chances of rebellion to Brazil.]

In rural areas, local governors were given the order to improve the working conditions of farmers at rubber plantations and to modernize the whole rubber industry. Thanks that the order were given to local governors in stead of a direct order to follow from Rio de Janeiro, each governor had freedom of choice to do. Soon rubber plants through all Brazil start reaching new peaks of production and farmers living condition improved. So good was this that people from the North-East of Brazil started migrating towards rubber producing zones looking for a better life. [-$1500 gold, +500 income to Brazil.]

As with Argentina, Brazil started their own investigation to see who had pocketed all the economic aid sent by USA. Though the people guilty for this still remains a mystery the whole investigation helped Brazil to modernize it's criminal investigation techniques. Small frauds and rackets are found and terminated improving the overall efficiencyof the Brazilian administration. [+50 base income, +1 stability to Brazil.]

With the Treaty of American Co-Operation, the nations of Argentina, Brazil and USA agreed to lower their trade tariffs to allow goods to travel more easily between each other country. Soon merchants from the three nations began to fill their pockets when their goods began arriving foreign lands.[+50 Trade Balance to Argentina (+50 North America). +50 Trade Balance to Brazil (+50 North America) +100 Trade Balance to USA (+100 South America).]

Africa​


The Boer War finally winds down to an end, with the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging, mostly because of the massive influx of British soldiers that surged right into the heartland of the Boer States. With their economies collapsing and supplies nearly impossible to distribute, they capitulated, and decided to accept annexation into the British Empire.

Asia​


A massive program in the Dutch East Indies kicks off with an effort to try and centralize and better the colonial government. The Colonial Governor is thrown out and replaced with a far more effective administrator, who promises top-down reforms of all kinds. This, going hand in hand with a "Dutchification" programme in the Dutch East Indies, attempts to bring the Netherlands to these old trading colonies. The population of both the Netherlands and the East Indies is receptive and supportive of these new policy shifts.

Early in 1902, the Boxers massing near the Liandong peninsula under Prince Duan were joined by 100,000 regulars from the Imperial Army led by Nie Shicheng. While the two forces had recently been opposing one another, an agreement was reached and the two leaders formulated a plan to unite and seize the Russian lease. Compounding Russian problems, Chinese labourers recently working on the peninsula had been hired by Nie Shicheng to provide information on the Russian defences. Russian naval commitments also denied the Russian commander, Anatoly Stessel, the option of removing the guns from the fleet to bolster the land defences, creating a situation many felt was undefendable in the long term. However, Stessel knew that to surrender without a fight was not an option he could seriously consider, and so left Colonel Nikolai Tretyakov to fortify Nanshan hill and delay the Chinese as best he could while he prepared Port Arthur. With only 5,000 men against nearly 160,000 Tretyakov seriously doubted that he could achieve much, but was determined to stand his ground.

In late January, Prince Duan led an attack against Chinchou, a walled town just north of Nanshan in order to clear the flanks. With their flanks secure, Duan and Shicheng led a combined assault upon Nanshan Hill. While the Russians were prepared, they were badly outnumbered, and wave after wave of Chinese threw themselves at the defences. When Colonal Tretkyakov requested much needed reinforcements, he discovered that Lieutenant-General Fok had withdrawn with his men to Port Arthur. Unsupported, Tretyakov was forced to retreat as well, losing many men in the process. [-5,000 regulars from China, -1,000 regulars from Russia]

After occupying the rest of the peninsula, the Chinese prepared for the siege of Port Arthur. After several months of bitter righting, General Stessel made the decision to surrender the port to the Chinese forces, much to the shock of his subordinates, who felt more should have been done to defend the Russian lease. The surrendered troops were passed into the custody of the Imperial Army, as they refused to go with the Boxers for fear of execution. With this loss, the Russian Pacific Fleet was from now on forced to resupply at Vladivostok, and had lost their only ice-free port in the Pacific. [-5,000 regulars from Russia, -20,000 conscripts from Russia, -30,000 regulars from China]

In early spring Muslim braves, supposedly acting under the orders of Dong Fuxiang, surprised the frontier town of Verniy in Russian Central Asia, overrunning the garrison and taking the town. Many of the Cossack settlers were taken into slavery, and the fort was occupied by the braves. [-1,000 conscripts from Russia, -2,000 regulars from China]

Along the Amur River, tens of thousands of Chinese soldiers poured across and attempt to take several border towns. As the Chinese attempted to cross the river, the few Russian defenders not sent into Korea caused great casualties, scoring direct hits on several large transport boats. By the end of the year the Chinese had gained no ground in the region, and due to fears of a fifth column the Russian towns had exiled their significant Chinese populations to die of exposure. [-30,000 regulars from China]

In the Southern provinces of the Chinese Empire, the Imperial Army readies itself for attack from French Indochina. However, no such attack is forthcoming, and the soldiers instead perform drills in preparation for the next year.

In the Empire of the Great Qing, the Imperial court pushes for a new sense of Chinese nationalism, or ‘Zhōnghuá’. Imperial propaganda emphasises the unity and equality of the different ethnicities through the Empire, and how their unity strengthens them. In accordance with this, the Empress Dowager proclaims that all land under the Great Qing is to be named Zhōngguó in all official documents, and that the “Empire of the Great Qing” will be phased out. Reformists are pleased as this step towards a more modern society, and the new ethnic equality diffuses Han dissidents. [+1 Stability to China, -500 gold from China]

As the Imperial court pushes on with reforming the government, a new postal service is proposed. However, the lack of quality infrastructure mean this proposal struggles to become reality. More successful is the establishment of a national mint and paper money, to ease financial transactions. Long-term benefits are countered by the short-term effect on the economy. [-3,000 gold from China, +700 base income.]

Following the recapture of territory leased to the Russians, the Chinese take efforts to salvage and reverse engineer the Russian military equipment. Copies are sent to the Empires arsenals, and full scale production begins. [+1 Army level to China in 1 turn.]

Trade with Bulgaria begins to impact the imperial coffers of both nations. [+50 trade balance to Bulgaria (+50 Asia), +50 trade balance to China (+50 Europe)]

In Japan, efforts are taken to improve the rail network, with lines from Tokyo to Osaka and Sendai both passing the Parliament. Red tape causes the construction to slow however. A campaign is also begun to entice Europeans to settle in Japan by advertising the health of Japanese cities, yet with recent improvements in European sanitation the effect of the campaign is less than ideal. For the first time, many roads in Japan are paved. This introduction improves the reliability of the road network across the Empire, and the use of local labour and resources keeps costs low. Military RD however is a subject foreign to the War Department, and efforts at developing one man submachine guns fail despite much investment. In the Yellow Sea a squadron of old-style French ships approached the Korean peninsula. The Russians blockading the region intended to let the ships pass without inspection due to their alliance. Too late the Russians realised that the ships were unmanned, and the ships crashed into the Russian navy with a great explosion. Before the Russians could properly regroup, the Japanese navy engaged the Russians. The modern wireless equipment used by the Japanese enabled them to co-ordinate their attack, causing much chaos and damage amongst the Russians. The Japanese were not untouched themselves, however. During the attack, several small ships passed through the blockade and resupplied the Japanese onshore. [-5 large ships from Russia, -15 small ships from Russia, -6 small ships from Japan, -1 large ship from Japan]

In Korea, Seoul falls after a 10 month siege. A final push by the Japanese army caused great casualties amongst the Koreans, civilian and soldier alike, who were suffering from a lack of supplies worse than the Japanese. Bitter resistance by the Korean defenders caused huge casualties to the Japanese as they entered the city, but their resistance was futile. When the Japanese finally entered Gyeongungung they discovered the Imperial family all dead, except for Crown Prince Yi Cheok, whose body could not be found. Following the attack, the exhausted Japanese army re-camped and attempted to gather what supplies it could in preparation for the inevitable push north. For his part, Field Marshal Ōyama Iwao was concerned that his depleted force of 70,000 would struggle to gain ground in North Korea, let alone successfully pacify what they had already taken. [-60,000 regulars from Japan. Seoul and Korean government fallen.]

Not knowing of Japan’s great losses in Seoul, the Russians waited for further reinforcements from the West. Bolstered by this force, the Russians left their encampments in North Korea and pushed south, leaving only a token force in the region. With 320,000 men under his command, General Kuropatkin left Pyongyang in late summer, determined to push the Japanese back. Hearing of the Russian approach, Field Marshal Iwao mustered what troops he had and prepared to hold the line. As they neared the Japanese lines, the Russian army saw the plumes of smoke billowing from the hallowed remains of Seoul. The stench of burnt flesh carried on the wind, and many among the Russian lines felt that they would rather be defending their homes against the Germans than defending an Asian backwater, but still they marched. Cossack cavalry harried the Japanese flanks, causing them to buckle and push towards their own centre. This allowed the Russian artillery an easier target, and they pummelled their enemy; yet the Japanese refused to break. In the late afternoon Kuropatkin ordered a general attack, and his conscript force charged against the Japanese lines. Unfortunately for the Russians, the Japanese had defended their lines with barbed wire to slow the Russian advance, allowing their machine guns to rake the Russians once they were in range. Time and again the Russian advance failed, only to be reformed and sent again. When the Russians prepared to attack again the next morning, they discovered that the Japanese had retreated under the cover of darkness to positions south of Seoul, leaving their dead where they lay. While Russian press reported to Moscow of a great victory over their opponents, the soldiers in the field felt very differently. Men had seen their friends and family sent to their deaths for a cause they didn’t believe in; and talk of mutiny began to spread. Under such circumstances, Kuropatkin felt that to order a further advance would see his army at best dissipate, and at worst revolt.[-130,000 conscripts from Russia. -30,000 regulars from Japan.]

At sea the Russian naval commander authorised bombardment of the Korean docks under Japanese control. Accurate shelling guaranteed minimal Korean losses, and many supplies were destroyed that the Japanese could ill afford to lose. In revenge for their earlier trickery, the Russian commander gathered his fleet, intent on clearing the region from Japanese ships once and for all. To draw out the Japanese fleet, the Russians moved to the strait of Tsushima to threaten the Japanese home islands. In response, Fleet Admiral Marquis Tōgō Heihachirō gathered his ships to defend Japan. Strong strategic planning gave the Russian fleet an initial advantage, badly damaging the Japanese. As the day wore on, the higher quality of the Japanese fleet, both in terms of equipment and training began to show, and the tactical advantage gradually passed to the Asians. Upon seeing that to continue to only cause more losses, the Russians pulled back from the Japanese islands and returned the Vladivostok to resupply. In the Philippines, a fresh investigation begins into the previous massacres of the local population by the USA. While this time the President personally pressures individuals to come to a proper result, the previous corruption troubles the situation and a satisfactory result will not be found until the coming year. For the first time in recent years, the Americans are having genuine success in their military actions. That is to say, they do not kill hundreds of civilians – While the resistance is almost wiped out, it is clear it will be another 12 months before the Americans can consider the Philippines pacified. [Philippine ‘rebels’ nearly defeated.]

In the Ottoman Empire, vast international diplomacy is carried out. The Treaty of Berlin ensures peace between the Bulgarians and the Ottomans, formally agreeing their border. The two powers also agree to non-aggression, and Germany invests militarily in each. [+1 Army level to Ottoman Empire]

The Ottomans also agree to formalise the situation already present in Kuwait. Reactionary members of the Empire call this a betrayal, while others call it pragmatic. However, all citizens of the Ottoman Empire cry out against the demilitarisation of the Sinai Peninsula. [-1 Stability from the Ottomans, -25 prestige from the Ottomans, Kuwait formally independent as a protectorate of the British Empire]

In Thrace, a great project is undertaken to establish a new city for the Macedonian refugees. Named Yeniev, the investment provided kick-starts new industry in the region and provides homes for all the refugees. [-4,000 gold from the Ottoman Empire, +3 industry to the Ottoman Empire]

Again, the Sultan tries to federalise what his rump empire. However, deadlock in his new parliament denies him what he seeks. The lack of money to properly deal with corruption causes what is granted to be wasted, and a drought during the summer months also causes efforts to reduce corruption and provide food to fail. [-500 gold from the Ottoman Empire]

In the Commonwealth of Australia, government propaganda continues to emphasise army recruitment. While some wonder what on earth the Commonwealth needs such a large standing army for, many are willing to join. [+40,000 regulars to Australia]

Attempts to raise taxes, in order to pay for the army increase, fail abysmally as parliament votes against the bill. Further failure is met when the nation tries to increase their naval presence. [-500 gold from Australia]

However, Australia is evidently a nation of alcoholics, as several breweries open up in Sydney, bringing in massive profits due to the entire population cramming their way into the new establishments. Trade with the Japanese Empire also brings in extra wealth. Reform is going to become the word of the year. Recent efforts to kick off more economic growth have failed. The government clearly needs more help from the people and the Capitalists. Efforts are going to be taken to loosen up and reform the Empire a bit to try and further the prosperity for all. Clearly being the driver has failed given current conditions so now we must assist the private citizenry in doing so themselves. More government efforts will be made to expand the economy and continue to keep the Empire at the forefront of development and advancement.

We also must insure that the Empire will endure many more days and the efforts of our past great citizens and rulers will not be in vain. It is not enough to just remember the great figures of the recent and deep past we must also expand upon what they built for and provided for us.
 
The Swedish Government is pleased by the years events. We shall attempt to find a solution to Government that is more acceptable to the Norwegian people than our current proposal, and we find ourselves glad that they spoke up in such a civilised and gentlemanly manner, rather than through violence. We applaud this behaviour.

Furthermore, we would ask the Danish Government to keep an open mind to our attempts to foster brotherhood between the Scandinavian nations. Whilst you may not agree with some of our proposals, we would ask that you not declare them all unworthy of your consideration.

Finally, we are pleased by the strengthening of relations with Netherlands and Belgium, and by the progress made by our nation in domestic fields.​

While the German government is busy making its voice known, why is neutral shipping being turned back and in general harassed by the German navy? Civilian traders moving goods across the Earth is keep to the development and prosperity of all nations.
 
I am pleased to see the increase of the people's trust in the government of Spain, as well as the effective stability nationwide. I am, however, displeased at the failure of the government's attempts at fixing the economic crisis both I, as King, and the people of our nation are suffering through. We must make headway, with the people's consent, to bring our nation out of this crisis and strengthen us as a European and worldwide economic power. I am, however, proud of the people of Spain and their resolution to continue living in this grave economic situation. To the people of Spain: it will get better. I can promise you that.

The Kaiser seems to have descended lower into the abyss of madness, when he conjures invisible ghosts and visions to explain the reality that he can no longer comprehend, that the German people is tired of the war, tired of a government which does not fulfill it's duty to improve the conditions of the German people, and tired of a Kaiser which sacrifices the lives of so many Germans to further his lust for war. For how long will the German people tolerate such a Kaiser?

The French Republic isn't responsible for any possible actions of it's citizens, although we are naturally skeptic about the Kaiser's claims, which don't seem to be based in reality at all, and we will not inquire into the subject, as the right to strike is guaranteed by French law.

On another topic, we demand an immediate end to the German blockade of the Bosphorus, and we will mobilize the French fleet to the area to protect all international shipping during it's crossing of the straits. We also urge the Ottoman government to take measures to put an end to the presence of German ships in it's territorial waters.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands

Her Majesty's Government has come far in our efforts to improve the lives of Dutch citizens. Surely, these new educational reforms will go a long way in improving the next generation's ability to solve the problems of life that they will be faced with, and the Netherlands will have a grand future ahead of them.

In regards to the East Indies, we welcome the natives, not as another race, ethnicity, or people, but as fellow Dutchmen. We welcome freedom, equality, and hard work in the East Indies, rather than corruption, negligence, and discrimination. The East Indies has always been, and always will be, an integral part of the Dutch nation, and if we continue along this path then one day the East Indies will be just as modern and advanced as Europe.

Finally, Her Majesty's Government announces the demobilization of the armed forces, as we have deemed that our German neighbors bare no malcontent for the Dutch nation.​

Canada mourns the death of the greatest monarch yet to live, the recently passed away Queen Victoria. Never before has any man or woman done so much for one nation in one lifetime. We wish King Edward the Seventh a lengthy and peaceful reign, and hope that he further strengthens the British Empire and all her dominions.

Canada would also like to welcome any migrants from war-torn Europe to its peaceful and fertile lands. If you are tired of living in a place constantly ravaged by feuding neighbors, our lands can grant you a peaceful and satisfying life.

Danubian Federation

We are happy to see once again the Danubian Federation bringing prosperity and more liberty into our nation, and that minorities, especially the Hungarians are finally that the benefits outweigh the downsides. Letting citizens of our nation speak in their mother tongues, and not forced to speak another language, alien to theirs is an important part of the new Federation, as is preserving cultural differences and diversity amongst the citizens, from the Italians in Trentino to Ruthenians in East Galicia.

We also are pleased to see the Skoda works expanding, and as such bringing in new jobs and increasing our economic potential and allowing our troops to be better equipped with equipment etc. We also would like to condemn the use of mustard gas in combat, as it is an inhumane weapon that can easily kill thousands upon thousands of soldiers and citizens alike in a horrific manner, I hope that this weapon will never be used on the field of combat.

We would like to see an end to this conflict in Albania, which killed thousands of Italian, Serbian and Greek soldiers, because of a small country in the Balkans, the most noticeable fact is that Italy had huge losses, and we hope that the nations in this war get to the peace table, and discuss a reasonable peace treaty, as was made before, but not signed by Albania, which could've ended this slaughter.

On the German-Russian front in the Russo-Japanese war, hundreds of thousands died in large scale combat, and now the front has moved from Poland into father East, and we hope that Germany and Russia will get on the peace table soon to discuss a peace treaty, and we hope that the war will end sooner rather than later.

The strikes rising in the Ruhr industrial centers in western Germany are truly disconcerting. If these strikers truly were funded by the French Government, it is even more disturbing. If France was indeed willing to do this, then why must they engage in underhanded techniques to undermine the enemies they are itching to fight, and yet they are not willing to engage in active warfare, which is clearly what they are wishing for? It is confusing to me and most likely all leaders of Europe.
