((To give you some feedback, here's my platform

Basically, his platform is the same as the last campaign, except this time, he's going to take a laissez-faire stance))

"That is the current outline of my plan. I may alter it, if circumstances require me to do so. Regard this plan as part of a comprehensive national policy, not a stand-alone agendum. This is merely my salient point, the only one that can be achieved under the current government's platform. Should a different government take charge, then other sections can be introduced for debate. This is not the time for them, though."

Anselmo Galante

My views are well known and I have been steadfast in them for the past 15 years. As always I make no apologies for being a staunch supporter of Free Trade and a laissez faire economy. It is no coincidence that the economy has prospered under the similar policies of our current President. Other candidates will try and say that intervention is needed to prop up our economy. This may be true but not by politicians who would not know how to get their own groceries let alone run a vibrant economy.

On religous grounds I believe in Pluralism and would ask for tolerance in all matters. The Government is not here to tell people what to think or do. We will leave that to the Socialists. I am and always have been Pro Military but have not swerved from my view that the welfare of our people must always come before the glory of Generals. I will not countenance a reduction in our Armed forces but see no reason currently to increase our already impressive army. Much has been spoken about our lack of navy. As a country that has such a large coastline and trade routes I find it incredible that our navy is such a joke.If the economy permits this will be my military priority for without a navy we are vulnerable and this cannot be tolerated.

I believe in representaion for all our people and will always support and promote legislation that encourages this and a fair electoral system.

I have always made it clear that I will not discuss specific potentialo appointments until the people in this glorious party have spoken but can assure you that I recognise and reward merit and experience and am willing to listen to all people and views whatever their ideology. My own views are strong and firm but I believe in checks and balances and will look to this if elected.

Long Live the Republic.

Carlos Andonie, Minister of the Interior and Senator for Santiago.

I am agitating. I will fight the regime of the traitors till they meet the justice they deserve.

I too agitate against the current state of affairs in Chile. Now that you are free of the Pretender prison, soldier Vallenare, I think that we should join forces and agitate together as part of a united front. With you operating from within Chile and myself providing support from without, we would make a formidable force for reform and restoration of constitutional government to the fatherland. I hope this letter finds you well and that you will discuss matters further with my agents.

Jingoism/Moralism/State Capitalism/Protectionist/Limited Citizenship

My main focus in my platform will be creating a navy to sail the seven seas. The first part of my focus is to have control our major industries by the government in order to establish a shipbuilding industry and never have to rely on foreign markets to do so. Along with the ship building industry, I shall also expanding and creating other industries that are profitable according to the decisions of the ministry. Second part of the focus, I plan to have a protectionist policy to protect our people's livelyhood not just on ship building but on every industry. We are simply no match against the industrial juggernaut of Europe and the United States. These parasitic foreign businesses would simply wipe out our businesses and our products that is proudly made by Chileans.

With an already strong army and an expanding navy, we shall have a strong foreign policy. Twice, already, the Brazilians have violated our honour and our nation's integrity. We will only be respected by our neighbours if we stand tall against any adversaries. We shall promote this hawk mindset so that Chile and her people shall never cower nor surrender! With a strong foreign policy, we shall spread Chile's virtue and glory, and have our flag waving not just here in South America but also around the globe!

On affairs such as religion and citizenship. While we support all sorts of religions, we must promote Catholicism to the people as Catholicism is one of the main pillars of Chilean culture and society. The Church shall promote moral values to our people to create a society of honest, selfless men and women. We also want foreigners to become Chileans, however, if they want to be a citizen then they should be living here continuously for a certain amount of time. This is a way for them to know our language, our culture, our way of life. This is not to hinder them but to make appreciated what it's like being a Chilean.

Viva La Chile!

- Alejandro Cortez, Minister of the Army and Candidate for Party Republicanos

The 1871 Primaries

1871 was another year of frenzied uncertainty for the Chilean political system. The sudden expansion of the franchise under the liberal President Antonio de Santa Rosa, combined with the Republicano hero's departure, led the political elite unable to so much as guess which of the many candidates might step in to take the field. Among the would-be candidates were old warhorses and fresh-young faces, Imperial collaborators and Republican patriots, students of laissez-faire and proponents of state capitalism. Particularly vexing for all those trying to tally the vote was the creation of the non-partisan Army Chief of Staff office. Unlike cabinet posts, which were appointed by the President, the Army Chief of Staff would be appointed by and serve at the pleasure of the Congreso, and many individuals who might otherwise have taken a cabinet appointment or run for president themselves were instead compelled to announce their candidacies for the Chief of Staff. Also troubling for any trying to predict a swing in the polls was the creation of the Radicales, who had fielded and nominated a candidate nation-wide for the first time. Some observers said they would be a powerhouse larger than expected; others claimed they would be irrelevantly small, and still others said they were merely a public face for militant elements in the country.

The Republicanos managed to tighten their primary field to three hopefuls while the socialist Federación expanded theirs to the same. Some observers said that this was now a sign of genuine equality between the parties - others said the opposite and it showed new consolidation within the Republicanos but added fractionalism in the FNT. The Radicales, for their part, hosted only one candidate - the much-vaunted Mario Zepeda, patriot of the revolution now returned from his outspoken criticism of the government to run for President himself. The main problem for the Radicales was the militant arms of their electorate, as no one could say how many of their party members would continue to vote in the streets and from the rooftops rather than at the polling stations. All three braced themselves for the bruising contest to come.

And meanwhile, in the shadows and the pubs and in their lonely self-imposed exiles overseas, the Rosenists continued their plotting against the Republic and their agents continued to spread their words and ideology throughout the country. Out of sight but not out of mind, the Imperialists watched the elections with mild amusement - they sought to regain their power in a very different way. As an anonymous note reminded the departing President Antonio De Santa Rosa, every dog will have its day.

Player Actions Needed:

It's time vote in the primaries again, and coalition voting is back. As before, you vote on your favorite candidate if there is no coalition, your preferred coalition, and your preferred candidate if there is a coalition.

You also have to vote on your favorite reform out of Proportional Representation, All Unions Allowed, and Non-Secret Ballots. You can vote for more than one if you like. The one with the most votes gets implemented provided it has enough support (which has to be more than majority.)

As a reminder, AGITATORS ARE DISENFRANCHISED AND CANNOT RUN FOR OFFICE OR VOTE!

Here's a sample ballot below.

Party: Republicanos
Candidate: Abstain
Coalition: With FNT/With Radicales/No Coalition/Abstain
Coalition Candidate: Abstain
Reform: Proportional Representation/All Unions Allowed/Non-Secret Ballots/Any Combination Thereof/None/Abstain

Since we're back to coalition voting, candidates can vote. We're voting on Chief of Staff later.

I'll give this two days to vote, ending 10 AM PST (6 PM GMT, I believe) on the 19th. I may cut it short if we get enough votes in quickly (25 or more by two days from now), as unlikely as that now seems.

Sorry for the early update this morning. I'm a little ill so you'll have to bear with me. I might be a bit erratic for a while.

My policies are Pacifism/Atheism/Planned Economy/Protectionism/Full Citizenship.

((I will get some more detail on them written out soonish, when I've finished the next chapter of my AAR.))

To my fellow socialists: State Capitalism is a despicable practice. It is capitalism by the state! It will lead to corruption and exploition of the working class! I am surprised that Comrade Carnal actually support this practice. It will not lead to a glorious socialist state. Rather, it'll lead to an oppressive Bourgeoisie dictatorship. I would understand if Comrade Carnal would support a Planned Economy, as such a thing is not capitalistic in the least. However, he does not, which is quite puzzling to me.

I support an economy regulated by the state so as to prevent it from exploiting its workers. However, a fully state-controlled economy is for me not very ideal. It will, as I've stated before, make the transition to a stateless society much harder. Thus, the workers should be able to work autonomously to improve the economy. Unregulated, this will lead to an oppressive capitalistic system. However, that is why I will not leave it unregulated. I will keep the economy regulated, but in such a state so as to make the transition to the stateless society of the future much easier. The economy must be controlled by the worker, not by the state.

There will always be a difference between the worker and the state. To leave the economy in control of the working class one cannot give the state full control of it.

- Sérgio Gogołów

Party: FNT.
Candidate: Carlos Carnal
Coalition: No Coalition.
Reform: All Trade Unions.

((Um, I don't think one can vote for oneself, or?))

Primaries: Abstain

Fellow Chileans, I seek your support in appointing me Chief of Staff. I am a career military man, not a politician, and have served Chile faithfully. As Chief of Staff I will ensure that our armies are ready to meet any threat to our interests, at home and in those nations that look to us for leadership.

-- Colonel Martin Schmidt

Party: Republicano
Candidate: Carlos Andonie
Coalition: Radicales
Coalition Candidate: Andonie
Reform: Non-secret Ballots, Proportional Representation

((Ah whatever, I'll just do the same then.))

Party: FNT
Candidate: Sérgio Gogołów
Coalition: No-Coalition
Coalition Candidate: Abstain
Reform: Non-secret Ballots

"You wish to accuse me of supporting capitalism, when you would merely have regulations and minimal intervention to stop the exploitation of the worker? I am truly insulted, Mr. Gogolow, and would wish you would stop with these mindless accusations. I support State Capitalism, for the moment, for the reason that a completely planned, centered economy would only be able to be truly obtained once I have implemented the first step, State Capitalism, and once I have pushed through the reforms I wish to push through. Secondly, it would lead to another uprising, a civil war, which is not something I will put Chile through again! Hold your tongue, and stop seeking to divide the workers. I am not a moderate Socialist, but nor am I a violent revolutionary. I am a Pacifist, Mr. Gogolow, and I call for a revolution of the people. A peaceful revolution!"

-Senator Carlos Carnal

((And yes, in the primaries you can vote for yourself.))
