King: (Are you saying your an anti-tac(o)-ite? Oh my god, its spreading.)

(Noted... retroactively, I really should not be taken seriously.)

Even though I'm a dyed-in-the-wool, if-you-cut-me-I bleed-red-in-a-metaphorical-sense-as-well socialist I still find it grating to hear Fascism so misidentified. Instead of lecturing, I'm going to pretend Rogov was ranting against Ultranationalism instead.

((Thank you. That Brings the Total to 2 National Vinogradists, 3 Marxist-Vinogradists, 2 Trade Unionists, and 2 Social Reformers. That is quite the coalition))

I'm failing to see the line between Trade Unionist and Social Reformers. Being that I seem to be both without any convoluted policies.

((Also, Komisha, inbox. Its full.))

((Cleared.))

((tastier (i am aware that it's not a real word))

((Yes it is.))

Guys, I'm just giving a warning. Stop going drastically off-topic, especially about tacos. If you have noticed, we have given much more leeway when it comes to this thread, please do not abuse our good graces. We want to give you guys the opportunity to enjoy yourselves, but please try to not go on tangents with off-topic subjects.

Benjamin Bachmann looks up in the middle of a congressional meeting, his Jew senses are tingling.

Ben: (I feel something terrible has happened. As if tens of forum voices all cried out at once, and were silenced. )

The current coalition our nation faces of socialists/vinogradists/ and what have you is too powerful. Clearly the politics of the Republicans and Democrats has excluded a serious portion of the voting pool somehow. To protect our Democracy, and the functioning of our economy, we must not allow a grand coalition of radicals to dominate politics.

(I am assuming, BBB, that perhaps these parties might be forcefully broken up into more realistic parties such as Populists and Progressives?)

There are three disitinct but cooperative ideologies at play in the party here and the unrepentant suppression of the radical Libertarians has not engendered amiciable feelings towards the conservatives and liberals. Sidelining the progressives and populists has only engendered solidarity within the workers' party.

If you guys are going to go ahead and ignore Moderator warnings, and comment on them in public, you guys obviously cannot police yourselves so I will just close this thread for a while.

Alright. We're BACK.

I hope we've learned from this experience and now know that off-topic discussion is bad, and knowing is half the battle.

Update incoming.

Jamous (1st Term): The Shallow End of the Pool
The presidential election of 1865 was defined by two scandals. The first came for the Republicans. In late December, the New York Tribune reported of the existence of a “secret police” set up by the late President Cameron in 1857. The ASS [1] had been set up to monitor the actions of people of questionable loyalty to the Union. During the war, it had sent numerous agents into rebel territory, often garnering valuable information.
Officially, the ASS had been disbanded since 1861 [2], but Americans were nevertheless outraged. Jamous and Beukes used the reveal to their full advantage in the election campaigns and debates. Demchak, who had not been informed of the existence of the organization, had no defense apart from the phrase “I had no knowledge of that”. The Republicans’ hopes for 1865 were effectively dashed.
The New Democrats seemed to be headed for a landslide, but then the second great scandal came to the fore. During the National Convention, Jamous had promised his new VP federal support for Howard Industries’ projects in the South, and the right to supply the United States Army with half of its materiel. Beukes, in-between his furious tirades at the Republican “secret police”, attacked Howard’s “corporate empire” with everything he had.
Jamous quickly retracted his promise, after consultation with Howard. This was appeased the voters sufficiently for most of the Rio Grande to vote for Jamous, and let the South bring him victory [3]. On January 20th 1865, Jamous became only the second non-Whig/Republican President since the election of Arthur King. The Libertarian portion of the vote however, could not be ignored.

Jamous immediately set about implementing the tax cuts he had promised. He managed to do so within a month of assuming office, supported by an almost unanimous congress. Next Jamous set for the Native’s Citizenship Bill. It passed by a much narrower margin, opposed vehemently by most of the western states. Jamous spent a large part of his political capital in June, fighting to remove the ban on the “radical parties”.
Bryan and Vandrove reentered politics with much fanfare, and supported the president in his endeavor for further expansion of health care and safety regulations. At the same time, they were unwittingly driving an irreconcilable wedge between the two components of the Libertarian Party. With the safety regulations being law by 1868, Jamous had given the reform he promised [4].

2. Michael Jamous, 14th President of the United States.

In general, industrial progress accelerated as the “Great Boom” continued to expand the fastest-growing economy in the world. One of the most prominent symbols of growing American trading power was the Panama Canal. President Williams had secured the right to of the United States to carve out the canal as early as 1859, but the pressures of war, reconstruction and the challenges of such a massive project had extended construction far beyond its promised deadline of 1864. The canal was finally opened on the 4th of July, 1866, in a lavish ceremony involving dignitaries from all the great nations of the world. Thus with new-found industrial might came more trade, and with more trade came more contact with the world outside of the western hemisphere.
The United States had always been distrustful of Europe and European politics. It was as true in 1865-9 as at any other time before, but for the first time, it seemed like staying out would be a detriment to American influence. With the Cuban situation still very much an issue, Jamous sought to find a way to reduce Spanish confidence without getting into a war.
His first line of action was the expansion of the system of alliances in South America, as a weapon with which to intimidate the Spanish, by creating a political encirclement of Cuba. Mostly unintentionally, Jamous’ strategy was also exerting increased pressure on Brazil, France’s lone ally on the mainland Americas. Indeed, when intimidating the Spanish through gaining allies failed, Jamous sought to deprive them of their allies.
The most powerful of these was France, which was at the time seen as the most powerful of the European nations. With unparalleled industrial might, and an army known for its strength, war with Spain seemed an unwise option as long as the French might intervene. To remedy the problem, Jamous looked to Prussia.
The Prussians had long been very clear about their hopes for a united Germany, under their rule of course. Since France did not agree with the Prussian goals, and would oppose any attempt to reach them, supporting Prussia seemed a natural option. The American ambassador pledged material support to the Prussians in case of a war against France or Austria during a meeting with Otto Von Bismarck in June 1867 [5].

3. Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck, President Jamous’ “Friend in Berlin”

To most Americans, the president’s political maneuverings against Spain were of little concern, as the threat of a resurged Confederacy slowly began to recede in the minds of the people. Similarly, the South became progressively less violent and difficult to deal with during the late 1860’s, as hopes for the Rebel Government’s return slowly died out even among the most diehard former confederates [6].
Then, in late 1868, Jamous and his government were forced to face the consequence of their European ventures. In August 1868, France officially ended its military alliance with Austria after a dispute over the political control of the Italian peninsula led to a thawing of relations between Paris and Vienna. Bismarck saw the opportunity immediately. With French support of the Habsburgs, war would have undoubtedly ended in an Austrian victory, but now Prussia had the advantage.
On September 17th, Prussia and its North German allies officially declared war on Austria. The President was now faced with the task of securing from congress the material support he had promised Bismarck. In one of the longest sessions in its history, congress spent thirteen unbroken days debating, with congressmen sleeping on benches or in their seats as speaker after speaker attempted to filibuster the Act for Assistance in the Creation of a Unified Germany. Finally, congress approved Bismarck’s support with as much as a third of congress abstaining from the vote. The United States was thus “entangled”.
The President thus headed into the National Conventions of 1868 as the man who had been stuck with the Cuban problem, and had made the United States a European friend who was not Britain. It was luck alone that the British too supported the Prussians, having kept their views on Germany to themselves before the outbreak of the war. Jamous could take comfort in the fact that he had managed to keep the United States out of a war with Spain. To many voters, who did not mind a dollar or two going to Prussia in a time of such prosperity at home, this would undoubtedly be enough.

[1] – Short for American Secret Service. The organization was reopened officially in 1882, and renamed the Central Intelligence Agency. The CIA, unlike the ASS, was focused more on foreign affairs than internal threats.

[2] – Since Fort Sumter, the ASS had in fact been infiltrating organizations deemed a threat to “the republic and its democratic traditions”, such as the ASDLP.

[3] – Most Southerners voted for Jamous despite his part in Reconstruction, because they opposed the Republican Party on principle and Beukes for his “New York Attitude”.

[4] – The Government Contracting Disclosure Act was controversial enough to be sidelined in a wordless agreement by the three main parties in 1866. It was brought up again by Christopher Bryan just before the National Conventions of 1868.

[5] – To the Prussians, defeating the Austrians was more of a concern than defeating the French, as the former held political control of the South German states of Bavaria, Wurttemberg and Baden.

[6] – Davis’ “government-in-exile” released numerous calls to arms, but each successive call saw less and less support in the South. To compare, in 1863, the “Call for Independence and Liberty” incited about 72 riots all over the South, numbering some 100,000 people. The Call’s 1868 equivalent was followed by a meager 12 riots numbering an estimate 19,000 people.

Exceptional Situation(s):

Primary Time!

The parties are: Republican, New Democrat and Libertarian.

You guys seemed to like the Libertarians, and they did well enough in the election, so I refrained from completely disbanding them. However, I will try to make it clear in the presidential election update why they might not be the most stable choice to run the country.

Also: aye/nay/abstain vote on The Government Contracting Disclosure Act.

First! :D

I, Christopher R. Bryan, am announcing my Candidacy for the Libretarian Nomination!

Government Contracting Disclosure Act: Aye

((Policies Incoming))

The Bryan Platform

Social Reform: The Continuing of Social Reforms started under Jamous, Priorities are to be given to Pensions so that those who have worked thier whole lives can enjoy thier twilight years without having to toil at thier old Age. Some sort of Minimum wage should also be implemented. All Peoples should also be free to practice thier own religion without interfernce or discouragement. ((Full Citizenship)) ((Pluralism))

Foriegn Relations: We should continue to actively support prussia in her quest for german unification against france, lest france become hegemonical and seek global dominance. Spain should continue to be pressured to hand over the confederate government but agressive actions should not be taken unless the spanish commence beligerrent acts themselves. We should seek to liberate Brazil from the French sphere and expand our alliance across all of the Two americas. If this is completed trading oppurtunities should be sought in the far east.

Economic: In accordence with the Doctrine of National Vinogradism capitalists should continue to run the economy free of government control, this is what thier best at and thier reason for existence. However, failing factories, particularly those that manufacture strategically importang goods should be subsidized to ensure the continued employment of thier workers. Government investment should be possible in the railroad sector if needed but the perrogative is with the capitalists. A Measure of Stock reform where enterprises employing 1000 or more workers are required to distribute 10% of thier stock to thier workers should be pursued. Cross border trade should flow freely across our borders. ((Interventionist)) ((Free Trade))

Military: The Military, as a large scale employer should be funded with priority given to the navy. With our Growing international responsibilities to our American and European allies we need a powerful navy to be able to project power at signifigant distances. Land forces should either be expanded with a secondary priority or kept stable depending on budgetary constraints. ((Pro-Military))

Miscelaneous: Immigration should be encouraged but not at the cost of mainaining a high level of literacy and education. As evidenced by the decrease in disorder in the southern states reconstruction should officially end and the Military occupation forces be withdrawn from the South. care should however be take to ensure the negro residents do not fall back into ignorance and Servitude. If the Confederate Government is repatriated I propose a special trial using 100-person jury with all cultures, peoples, and ethnicities within this great nation making up over 1% of the population represented. These people will be chosen randomly from the latest cernsus data. Such a unique Jury will allow the American People to decide both guilt and appropriate punishment. The Judge wil be the Most senior Supreme Court Judge, Mr. Bob.

((I Have the urge to ask if anyone knows, Are we the longest thread in Forum History? We've gotta be up there))

What is the government contracting disclosure act?

(My apologies also) for having the US be run for four years under a New Democrat administration.

I shall seek another term in office for the New Democrat nomination. If I win, I shall follow in the footsteps of those before and not run for a third term.

I believe that I can continue to pressure Spain until such a point that they will gladly give up the Rebel "Government-In-Exil."
For now, we must continue to send aid to our friends and allies in Berlin, and allow for the German people to be ruled be one nation, a German nation.

I shall also support the The Government Contracting Disclosure Act, so I vote aye.

I would rather have this country be run by a honest New Democrat than ruled by a Republican ASS
