((I think voting stops now.))

Normally polls would have closed, yes, but I'll wait another half-hour for zagoroth - if he hasn't voted by then, polls close as normal. It will take me that long to write the next update anyway...

((So who is winning the Republicano nomination, at the moment. It may be tied up... hopefully... no offense Cortez ;)...))

I concede defeat to Compañero Carnal. Let us hope that we will win the coming election, and set forth our goal of improving the worker's plight.

- Sérgio Gogołów

The 1871 Conventions
The 1871 Conventions saw a return to the coalition politics that had dominated the previous Republic. Growing socialist and radical factions had emerged to challenge the large-tent Republicanos party, and the expansion of the Socialist field to three frontrunner candidates and the contraction of the Republicano field to the same - combined with tight races in both primaries - caused media attention to be divided equally between them. While most observers continued to agree that Republicano membership was larger than the FNT's, the growing Chilean working class had swelled the FNT's ranks to the point that a competitive election seemed likely. The Radicales, for their part, had only one candidate: their vaunted leader Mario Zepeda, who took the opportunity of the quiet primaries to begin his presidential election bid early.

The Republicano field saw the entry of the old-hat liberal Carlos Andonie, conservative jingo Alejandro Cortez, and dark horse Armin Tanzarian. Of the three, Andonie and Cortez quickly emerged as the frontrunners and gathered their supporters from their respective factions within the party. An important point of contention between the pair was the matter of the coalition. Andonie and his supporters strongly favored and olive branch with radicals while Cortez and his people opposed any such coalition. The issue within the party was as evenly split as their supporters, with Tanzarian remaining quiet on the issue. The battle between Andonie and Cortez continued right into the convention, where after a dozen ballots the Conservative Cortez was finally nominated by a nose, much to the chagrin of the former president Antonio de Santa Rosa, who had thrown his backing behind Andonie. The convention eventually decided to drop the question of coalition, as the laconic representatives of the Radical party had failed to bring the matter to a vote at their own primaries in an atmosphere of stark indifference at the Radical's own conventions.

The FNT primaries were divided between the Republican defector Sérgio Gogołów, the standby socialist Carlos Carnal, and the radical communist and dove Osvaldo Tamiuszski. The primary, though considerably less contentious than the Republican field, was orchestrated with no less drama. Gogołów enjoyed enough support as a moderate to seriously oppose Carnal, even though the latter had the lead. Combined with Tamiuszski's own base of radicals, the wings of the party might have been enough to cause Carnal serious problems at the conventions. Just before the convention, however, Tamiuszski announced his withdrawal from the primary and threw his support to Carnal. The boost to Carnal's numbers were just enough to secure him the nomination for a second time just over the centrist Gogołów. In his final address to the convention, Gogołów conceded defeat and expressed his hope that Carnal would work to further their goals as socialists and better the lot of the working man.

Last, the non-partisan office of Army Chief of Staff, the only high office appointed by the Congreso rather than elected or appointed by the President, was the subject of a silent but furious fight over the course of the primary season. Rather than campaign, no fewer than five candidates (most of whom came from military backgrounds) sought to consolidate their support within the Congreso. The media, however, was blinded by the dazzling fury of the presidential primaries and paid the important Chief of Staff election little heed.

I can use your older ones if you like. As soon as I get your platforms, we can start voting on President and Army Chief of Staff.

Republicanos Candidate: Alejandro Cortez ((Zzzzz...))

Jingoism/Moralism/State Capitalism/Protectionist/Limited Citizenship (0+0+0+0+1=1)

My main focus in my platform will be creating a navy to sail the seven seas. The first part of my focus is to have control our major industries by the government in order to establish a shipbuilding industry and never have to rely on foreign markets to do so. Along with the ship building industry, I will also bring focus on expanding and creating other industries that are profitable. Second part of the focus, I plan to have a protectionist polict to protect our people's livelyhood not just on ship building but on every industry. We are simply no match against the industrial juggernaut of Europe and the United States. These parasitic foreign businesses would simply wipe out our businesses and our products that is proudly made by Chileans.

With an already strong army and a strong navy, we shall have a strong foreign policy. Twice, already, the Brazilians have violated our honour and our nation's integrity. We will only be respected by our neighbours if we stand tall against any adversaries. We shall promote this hawk mindset so that Chile and her people shall never cower nor surrender! With a strong foreign policy, we shall spread Chile's virtue and glory, and have our flag waving not just here in South America but also around the globe!

On affairs such as religion and citizenship. While we support all sorts of religions, we must promote Catholicism to the people as Catholicism is one of the vital pillars of Chilean culture and society. The Church shall promote moral values to our people to create a society of honest, selfless men and women. We should allow foreigners to become Chileans, however, if they want to be a citizen then they should be living here continuously for a certain amount of time. This is a way for them to know our language, our culture, our way of life. This is not to hinder them but to make them appreciate what it's like being a Chilean.

FNT Candidate: Carlos Juan Carnal ((Red Cesar))

Anti Military/Secularism/State Capitalism/Protectionism/Full Citizenship (2+2+0+0+2=6)

I support State Capitalism and Protectionism: Capitalists can simply not be trusted to keep the well being of the workers above their own greedy ambition! As well, I support Protectionism for the reason that foreign nations cannot be trusted to keep the interests of our people to heart! I plan to initiate an industrial plan, making Chile a prosperous nation for the well being of the workers, farmers, and laborers throughout our country!

Secularism and Full Citizenship: No man should be declined entry to our nation based upon race, religion, or nationality. Chile welcomes all immigrants with open arms! I also will work diligently to ensure that the separation of Church and State remains as such, and the influence of the Catholic church is curtailed as much as possible on a political level.

Anti-Military: I propose that the level of the armed forces of our nation are adequate for the time being, and shall not be increased during my term. I as well would like to put ahead several bills proposed by my friends in the senate, determining who should be in charge of the separate armies of the republic.

Radicales Candidate: Mario Zepeda ((thekinguter))

Jingoism/Free Trade/Laissez Faire/Full Citizenship/Atheism (0+1+2+2+3=8)

Hello Chileans. I am Mario Zepeda, a businessman, a freethinker and a mason. I want to introduce my plan: OTLA as a permanent alliance/coalition of Chile's friends. Secular marriages and public cemeteries for non-catholics.

UNION
In my presidency, I would like to lead Chile into the first international organization of commerce, research and peace. We as a nation would focus on those 5 years in uniting South America under the same banner of peace. It would mean an extensive diplomatic approach on our remaining rogue neighboors and defending such from European Imperialism. I would also want to undermine the US grip on Mexico, and Spanish rule in Cuba, as it is clearly not for the best interest of the Latin American peoples to have such dangerous rulers and oppresors in our land. For such, we would need the entire capability of our large army, and only Jingoism would provide what we need. I do not encourage an open conflict with the US or Spain (yet!) but rather diplomatic pressure and military buildup and requests for access in nearby bases, just to scare them off.

DIVERSITY: Public cemeteries and civic marriage
Also, I want to propose a bill that I would make the second flag of my presidency, a bill to force our policy into Secularism and lower only. During these nearly sixty years of independence, people who followed Mapuche paganism and native american beliefs were oppressed under a strong catholic church. Mapuches and their descendants were and are not allowed to bury their dead in cemeteries, and neither are their marriages legal, as the archbishop of Santiago administrates all the civic census. This situation must change, as you can see many of our citizens follow diferent beliefs. A large percentage of our people are followers of native american religions (like the Patagonians or Aimaras) and others of european descent follow different protestant or reformed versions of our faith. We must tolerate other beliefs to bring a strong sense of unity and to enrichen the cultural diversity of our country. Remember that all the other South American nations look up to us, we must give the example! Let us bring public schools, public cemeteries and civic marriage into existance in Chile!

"Respeto y Diversidad, para una Latino America unida!"

VOTE! I need your vote for Cortez, Carnal, or Zepeda. If you vote by party, I will pair your vote to the corresponding ticket.
You also need to vote for the Army Chief of Staff,

As always, remember to bold your votes or they might not be counted.

If you're a candidate and you want to change your platform or picture from the above, just let me know.

A sample ballot would look like:
President: Cortez/Carnal/Zepeda
Army Chief of Staff: Schmidt/Roseno/Vargas/Olózaga

This poll will end at 10:00 AM PST on the 21st (two days) or if 25 votes are reached before that.

Again, kudos to anyone who knows who the portraits are really of without looking it up.

Though I care not for his jingoism, or his anti-religious views, I will endorse Mario Zepeda for president, and would advise him to moderate such views to better bring cooperation to Chile.

As for the position of Army Chief of Staff, I will endorse Sebastian Roseno for the position. He has served in the military, has obvious experience, is a strong moderate, and I trust him to protect the people of Chile.

((You do look like Ian McKellan :eek:hmy: ! Well, a little bit...))

President: Carlos Juan Carnal

Hmm, on the candidates for the position of Army Chief of Staff I have inadequate knowledge of. I cannot make such an important decision without vital knowledge about these individuals. I would suggest that they state why they should be elected to this important position. Which is to say that they should state past experiences along with other reasons.

President: Zepeda, as his views, minus his atheist beliefs, are the ones most suited to continuing Chile's greatness.

Why should you vote for myself for the Chief of Staff position? I have served almost my whole life in the military. I fought in the wars against Bolivia and Argentina, and stood defiant when Badajoz attempted to retain control over the nation. I rose through the ranks from a humble private to now command one of our nation's great armies. I have countless years on my side of experience when compared to the other candidates, and have showed my loyalty to this Republic over the years since it's reinstitution. Please, lend me your vote to allow me to adequately serve Chile and advise the Congresso and Presidente on what may be done militarily.

-Sebastian Roseno, Generale of the Army of Bolivia-Peru, Chief of Staff Candidate

Chief of Staff: Roseno. He has earned my respects and I believe he deserves the position.

Also, do not be scared about my atheist views. I, like a good Zepeda, am a freemason and I believe non-christians deserve equal representation in this Republic for it to be truly free.

-Mario L. Zepeda

"Senor Zepeda, your atheist policy means that religion will be prevented. I believe that the term you are looking for is Secularism. That's what we give. We merely want the government to have no involvement in religion. Your atheist policy means that people are prevented form being religious. And I said it twice because it's that important."

Anselmo Galante

(( Is candidate Cortez the former cabinet minister turned military officer of the Imperial Period? ))

((It's confusing because Atheism's in-game description is basically the definition of secular, as opposed to being state-atheism.))

Yeah, about that.. I started up the game to choose my policies, so no wonder if they don't match the AAR description.
