History

The Kingdom of Naples occupies the Italian peninsula south of the Papal States. It comprises roughly the regions of Campania, Abruzzi, Molise, Basilicata, Apulia, and Calabria. Naples (Napoli) is the capital.

In the 11th and 12th cent. the Normans under Robert Guiscard and his successors seized S Italy from the Byzantines. The popes, however, claimed suzerainty over S Italy and were to play an important part in the history of Naples. In 1139 Roger II, Guiscard's nephew, was invested by Innocent II with the kingdom of Sicily, including the Norman lands in S Italy. The last Norman king designated Constance, wife of Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI, as his heir and the kingdom passed successively to Frederick II, Conrad IV, Manfred, and Conradin of Hohenstaufen. Under them S Italy flowered, but in 1266 Charles I (Charles of Anjou), founder of the Angevin dynasty, was invested with the crown by Pope Clement IV, who wished to drive the Hohenstaufen family from Italy. Charles lost Sicily in 1282 but retained his territories on the mainland, which came to be known as the kingdom of Naples. Refusing to give up their claim to Sicily, Charles and his successors warred with the house of Aragon, which held the island, until in 1373 Queen Joanna I of Naples formally renounced her claim.

During her reign began the struggle for succession between Charles of Durazzo (later Charles III of Naples) and Louis of Anjou (Louis I of Naples). The struggle was continued by their heirs. Charles's descendants, Lancelot and Joanna II, successfully defended their thrones despite papal support of their French rivals, but Joanna successively adopted as her heir Alfonso V of Aragon and Louis III and Rene of Anjou, and the dynastic struggle was prolonged. Alfonso defeated Rene and in 1442 was invested with Naples by the pope.

Giovanni III Julian, son of Giovanna II Julian, brought the news of Alfonso's inherited kingdom to him in Valencia. He accepted his new kingdom and prepared to be crowned for it. Giovanni was granted a viceroyalty over Naples. He sent a portion of the viceregal treasury to Transylvania to defend the interests of Catholicism there. Alfonso went into a rage and was greedy for just the slightest dime. He invaded Naples and imprisoned Giovanni. His nephew, Andrea Julian, now acted as his regent and is leading partisan resistence in Naples.

Apparently, the nobles of Naples were not quite ready for freedom. Andrea Jullian now serves as a loyal vassal to Aragon.

Army

The majority of the wartime army consists of pikemen, frequently recruited, untrained, however heavily armed peasants.

The standing army consists mainly of nobles that can be called to action at any time. They all go into battle armed with horses.

The most high ranking nobles, elite troops who command the armies, are the most heavily armed. They were responsible for the ambush on Alfonso V in the battle of Frenschita Forest north of Napoli.

Navy

The Neapolitan Navy consists mainly of galleys.

In times of offensive warfare transports are put out to sea.

The Neapolitan economy depends highly on fishing boats. These are sponsored by the department of the navy.

Treaties

The Italian Trade Federation

I. Introduction
The Italian Trade Federation is designed to promote a free trading society within the members of it. Only Italian nations and provinces adjacent to the eastern and western seas of Italy are invited. This includes but is not limited to Corsica, Sardinia, Malta, Ragusa, Albania, Dalmatia, and Istria. Owners of these provinces are not necessarily part of the federation, as they join on their own accord.

II. The Council
The federation offices will be based out of Napoli and will be run as a democracy. A council will meet once a year in Genoa, as it has been decided as the most convenient host location as a major trading centre. A simple majority is required to make common decisions while a two-thirds majority is required to make major decisions such as changing the host location and making changes to the treaty. At any time any member of the federation can call for a council session. This will be held in the host city, Genoa.

III. Voting
Each member country's representative to the council will get one vote.

IV. Benefits of the Federation
Merchants belonging to members of the federation will have to pay no tariffs while trading in ports and inland trade centres of the other members. A trade stockpile of numerous resources from all members of the federation will be compiled in Napoli. By centralizing the location of the main trading, merchant costs shall naturally be cut significantly and have a more ample source for their nations.

V. Amendments and Current Federation Information
The current host city of the federation is Genoa. Pablo Rodriguez, representative from Naples, is the current president of the federation. Venice has been expelled from the treaty. Should another nation take control of Istria, Dalmatia, or Veneto they will be welcome into the federation following council discretion.

VI. Presidency of the Federation.
Every three years a President of the Federation will be elected. He will not get any additional votes for the nation he represents, but will have the job of mediating the council. He has the power to overwrite any decisions made by the council that he doesn't approve of. If the council feels that he is abusing his power, they only need a simple majority to remove him.

Signed,

[x]Andrea Julian
Viceroy of Naples

[x] Allesandro Doria
Doge of Genoa

[x]Cosimo I de Medici
Duke of Tuscany

[x]Stefan Crnojevic
Duke of Ragusa

[x] Filippo Maria Visconti
Duke of Milan

Pact of Florence

Introduction
The devout nations of Naples and Tuscany have fallen under the whims of foreign invaders numerous times. This treaty is designed to prevent the happening of such in the future.

I. When either party, Tuscany or Naples, falls under attack the opposite party is pledged to present active military aid to the attacked party.

II. If direct military aid is not available then the attacked party shall be granted a minimal loan of 100,000 ducats [1 eco point] by the opposite party.

III. The Viceroy of Naples and his staff shall travel to Florence to sign and affirm the treaty.

IV. All attacks on either party six months prior to the signing of this treaty are subject to the terms of the Pact of Florence.

[x]Andrea II Julian
Lord Protector of Naples

[x]Cosimo I de Medici
Duke of Tuscany

A Priest arrives from the neighboring Papal States, introducing himself to the court as Guido Larini.

I have appeared at this court to represent his Holiness the Pope, and wish to express his continued dedication to a peaceful and benevolent relationship with Naples. I shall be remaining at this court, with granted your permission of course, and shall be available should there be any issues which you wish to discuss.

Viceroy,

Am I not the KING of Naples? How dare you disrespect myself and Aragon by not even consulting me on the loan of money to of all places Transylvania! This is a slap in the face to Naples and its KING, ME! I demand that the money be stopped this instance and not sent to the land of Transylvania. I am headed to Naples as of this moment.

By his own hand in Valencia,
Alfonso
King of Aragon, King of Naples.

I will be crowned in Napoli but I will be crowned by the force of the sword. It is my right to claim the crown which was left to me. I will not have a fool running my Kingdom into the ground.

People of Sicily you are loyal to the crown of Aragon your troops shall unite Naples and Sicily in a Kingdom of Two Sicilies. Today we march upon Naples to protect our crown.

With that the King heads to the local fort.

Along with this report a letter comes before the Viceroy of Naples:

Viceroy,

You have brought much trouble to the Kingdom of Aragon and therefore we will take you from your position and incorporate the Kingdom of Naples fully unless these actions are fixed. Do not make us use force to do so. I am the King of Naples and love her people it would hurt me truly to do so.

A tall figure robed in burgundy steps up.

I am Andrea Julian, nephew of Giovanni III Julian and acting regent to the crown of Naples. Uncle Giovanni chose me as his successor in the event of any mishap.

Andrea looks at the letter from Transylvania and smirks. He hurriedly jotted down a bit onto the letter, sealed it, and handed it to Sandrine De'Revol.

Andrea looks over to Guido Larini and begins speaking again.

It is not safe here for you anymore. You will be escorted back to Rome immediately. Elan Guiterosi shall be traveling with you to the Vatican. Naples is no longer safe.

Andrea hands a letter to Larini.

This document contains the my location of governing for the duration of the war. Direct all letters to there.

Andrea hurries Larini out of the court.

A letter arrives in the besieged city bearing the seal of King Alfonso V of Aragon.

Rebels,

I as your King demand that you end this reistance at once and surrender to me this city and province. You are my subjects and I wish for this bloodshed to end at once. My forces are large enough to defeat your entire nation, but I wish to embrace you as subjects not as enemies. Surrender at once or face the death of traitors.

A letter is delivered by one of the few Hanseatic merchants brave enough to face the dangers of trading in a wartorn nation.
In reward, the brave merchant had been given permission to trade despite the Bremer embargo, and he didn't wait for an answer to the letter, nor to make sure it did reach the correct recipient, in his hurry to get back to making money.

Andrea Julian.

As one catholic prince to another, and with no mentioning of your rebel status, I ask you to show the true qualities of a ruler.
A king must be ready to lay down his life for his land. He must be prepared to sacrifice all he holds dear for the sake of his subjects. He must have the courage to openly admit defeat and mistakes, thus sparing the life of his population.

Andrea, I beg you, for the sake of your people, prove to all the world that you are a worthy king. Even though King Alfonso will proprably have you executed,a s is indeed his right as overlord over a rebellious vassal, the noble houses of Europe will remember you as a rebel, but a brave rebel, that sought the best for his country, even at the expense of his own life.

With Naples under attack by one of the greatest armies ever fieded by any catholic king, and under trade embargo from mercantile powers, your struggle is lost. Make the right choice, and surrender your cities and soldiers to Aragon.

May God have mercy on your soul

Court at Napoli & West Gate

Andrea Julian stepped into his court. He had returned from the battlefield, but never wore any armor. He had claimed the lives of 37 Aragonese infantrymen with his bow and arrow. Indeed, he was a sharpshooter. He stepped into his private chamber. An hour later he returned from it and sat at his throne. He spoke with his advisors, nobles, and commanders of the battle.

The armies of Aragon have ceased the assault. I have no clue why a king such as Alfonso would ever do that...

Henri de Bretagne spoke up.

Sire,
Alfonso was relentless at Apulia. I have no idea why he would fall back from the assault either.

A young lad rushed into the court.
Sire,
Word has it that Alfonso fell in battle North of Naples trying to rout our lines from there.

Henri spoke again

Aye.
This could very well be means for the armies of Aragon to cower and call off the assault.

Andrea remained silent, with a hopeful looking glint in his eyes.

A few guards entered the court.

The one who was apparently the leader spoke up.

Sire, you must come with us immediately. There is a small party from Aragon at the West Gate. They carry with them a white flag bearing a dove and an olive branch.

Another guard speaks.

Cardinal Dupox, you must come with us as well.

The cardinal stood up.

Very well, my son...

Andrea, still silent, along with Cardinal Dupox, Henri de Bretagne, and a few advisors and additional guards; proceeded to the West Gate.

Shortly afterwards Julian's party arrived at the West Gate. One of the guards looked over the wall and saw a few stout men and a figure resembling Bishop Francesco della Rovere, a man winning the elections to the Papacy! The guard said a few words very fast to Andrea and smiled at him. Andrea motioned to the guard and the gate was opened. Indeed it was Bishop Rovere! Rovere's party was escorted to a nearby church office and was warmly greeted by the people there. They were seated there. Andrea spoke up.

So, what is it that you wish to speak of?

Bishop Francesco della Rovere sits upon the fine chair given to him and answering the question of the Viceroy of Naples speaks:

My son first let me thank you for allowing me here to broker a peace between the forces of Aragon and Naples. Know that I work for no one, but only for the lord. My mission as given to me by God is to prevent death anymore upon this ground.

As you know the army of Aragon usually fierce in fighting has stopped its attack upon your capital. The reason behind this is King Alfonso has indeed passed from this world. I myself heard his dying confession and last orders and held his hand in Christian brotherhood as he died. Know that Alfonso's dying words were of the bloodshed here and how he felt eternally damned for his actions.

As a show of good faith for these negotiation I have here someone you would indeed like seeing.

With that a well rested and fed Giovanni III Julian enters the room and embraces his nephew.

Your Duke and uncle is released unharmed by Aragon into your custody. All charges of treason have been dropped and he is free to go.

As well here I have the last will of King Alfonso V, which has not been read. Let me present to you what Alfonso wrote as he lay dying.

I Alfonso V King of Aragon do hereby present my last will and wishes for the Kingdom of Naples

I. I Alfonso V do hereby upon the acceptance of the enclosed treaty will forever renounce any claim upon the throne of Naples by myself and subsequent Kings of Aragon. No more shall Aragon rule in Italia, for I have caused too much pain and suffering for the good people there.

By his own hand in Naples.

Alfonso V

The enclosed treaty my son is indeed complex and in fact a bit surprising to me let me show you what Alfonso had in mind.

Treaty of Napoli

I. The province of Naples shall be handed over to the Kingdom of Aragon, thus making the entire nation under the rule of the Aragonese Kingdom.

II. Upon "annexation" the Kingdom of Naples consiting of the provinces of Napoli and Apuila shall forever more be given to the Papal states as sign that only the servants of God shall rule the good people of Naples.

III. Giovanni III Julian shall forever more be remembered as the liberator of Naples, and released as all charges shall be dropped.

This is the treaty which I present to you, upon my deathbed.

By his own hand in Naples
Alfonso V.

My son indeed this is a surprise to me, but I urge you to accept as it would end the bloodshed and we can start working together to glorify the name of the lord. With this treaty Aragon shall forever more be out of Italia which I belive is God's will. Let me say from a personal standpoint that King Alfonso was indeed sorry for his actions and sorry for the pain and suffering he caused Naples.

Andrea looks over the treaty. He beams at the cardinal and at Henri. They come closer and skim of the treaty themselves. They smile approvingly. Andrea pulls the treaty to him. He beckons his uncle, Giovanni, towards him. He asks Giovanni to sign the treaty and he signs it as well.
