THE UNITED KINGDOM
of Great Britain and Ireland

Her Majesty, after hearing of the death of Her Admiral of the Fleet Sir Fairfax Moresby, is infuriated by the Italian attack on the Royal Navy's frigate, and demands the captain of the HMIS Vittorio be handed to officers of the Royal Navy to stand trial in London, and that the Italian government pay for the state funeral for such a great admiral. Further, the United Kingdom formally guarantees neutral shipping in the Mediterranean, including Swedish ships carrying out orders under the Accord over the Pergamon Excavations.

On a brighter note, Her Majesty is delighted over the upcoming marriage between Princess Beatrice Mary Victoria Feodore and Napoléon Eugène Louis Jean Joseph, and Her Majesty shall personally attend the marriage. She welcomes this as a step towards closer Anglo-French relations, and looks forward to times of co-prosperity.

The Summer of Lights

While the crisis in the Balkans seemed to continue to flow forward, as news of riots and battles continued, across the waves, in the new world, the United States of America stood as, after the brutal War Between the States, as the bastion of peace and stability in the world. In late July, meetings between inventor Thomas Alva Edison and the United States Patent Office, as well as several visits by Mr. Edison to the White House, culminated in August of 1872, where he announced, to the New York Times, of a new and ingenious invention of his.

It was called the Electric Light bulb. While it wasn't the first time experiments in using electric power to produce light were completed, but Thomas Edison was able to show, prove, and create, his own Electric Light Bulb that was convenient, practical, and easily able to be obtained by more common people. The announcement created a national firestorm, as thousands of wealthy men clamoured to try and get it installed in their own homes and businesses. This was not limited to the United States either, as orders and letters soon came in from wealthy Confederate planters, rich British industrialists, and royal French aristocrats, asking for these new light bulbs.

5606_325xEdison.jpg

A popular image of Thomas Edison showing off his first Electric Light bulb.

One of the major factors, however, was the idea of powering these new forms of illumination. Edison had his own personal generator in his own workshop, and knew that many problems would be met in installing this in many different houses and businesses across the country. He made it a priority, for the remainder of the summer until the early winter, to install a set inside the White House to try and show how well his invention would work. On the 22nd of October, 1872, the first major application of electric power was unveiled to the world. Coming directly off the heels of the invention of the light bulb, the White House had announced that the President's Office, as well as the Foreign Dignitaries Room, was completely illuminated using Edison's incandescing light bulb. While each bulb only lasted, on average, for a week, the effect it had on those who visited the White House was simply described as a spectacle. The British Ambassador to the United States, along with his Canadian counterpart, were hosted in the White House with President Seymour. As discussion seemed to drag into the night, the President simply stood up, flipped a small switch, and the entire room was ablaze with light, as the Englishman described it, "It was if the Sun had graced us inside the Room, our own Sun! Surely the United States, which has mastered the art making small artificial suns, is far more advanced than our own engineers and scientists back at home, for shame! It may the end of the British Era as we know it!"
[+50 Prestige to the United States]

The concerns of the ambassador, however, would take nothing more than simple time to tell if such a prophecy would come true. The tale of the American Engineer and his ability to harness electricity and light made him become a world-wide sensation, as invitations from the prestigious Royal Houses of Europe flooded into his laboratory in New Jersey. He, however, paid no attention to such invitations, and continued his work so he could better innovate and improve upon his design, for the cause of the United States of America, and all of her people.

Victory. We have crushed the Faithless armies of the African states who defied Allah in opposing us and Allah gave us an eternal triumph which will likely never be repeated. However the Alliance may have been crushed but it's associates continue to oppose us. The Bornu Empire provided according to our intelligence both Volunteers and money to support the alliance and even now are mustering warriors to oppose us. We will not let them fight on their terms. Sokoto Declares war on the Bornu Empire and they shall be defeated like all the enemies of Sokoto have been defeated.

Situation in the Balkans

The nationalist sentiment on the Balkans has led to increased instability for years. Due to the fact that the situation has gone unaddressed it has now escalated to open fighting in Greek areas of the Ottoman Empire and the prospect of full-blown war is upon the region. In is crucial that all of those parties involved take the necessary steps to reach a compromise and prevent a major war.

To this end the actions taken by Italy are both unwelcome and destabilizing. An unprovoked attack against another power is never justified. Whatever claims the Italian government makes about restoring stability in the region the reality is that the actions are nothing but an opportunistic attack which must not be allowed to succeed, lest a dangerous precedent is set.

It must be remembered that the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Greece are guaranteed jointly by United Kingdom, France, and Russia. As the current government o Russia has assumed all responsibilities of the previous monarchist one it remains the responsibility of Russia to defend Greece, if necessary. It is a responsibility of the French government, as a result of the Crimean War, to ensure the safety and rights of Christians in the Ottoman Empire. The French Empire should take appropriate steps to carry out this responsibility.

In light of these entanglements it is the view of the Russian Republic that a meeting of representatives of all sides involved would be beneficial in preserving peace and stability. Such a meeting should be hosted, preferably at a neutral location, with all possible expediency.

The Swiss Confederation offers Bern, a fine city of our own standing, in order to host any potential conference over the fate of the Balkans. We propose this due to our regional location, stability, and neutrality in affairs that concern relations between the other nations of Europe. We hope that a peaceful resolution can be achieved to the current bloodshed in Southern Europe.

The Andean Confederation
e5p4.png

It was with great pleasure last year that we announced to the world the creation of great Union, the building of a new nation and the completion of Bolivars dream. Three of the sons of Bolivar, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela, joined together as one, forging a new, strong, prosperous nation. Today our people stand united under the Andean banner. In the one short year of the Andean Confederations existence, we have made much progress and much more to announce to the world.

First of all, every nation needs a flag, a banner to defend, serve and die for. Our nation is no different. It is with great pleasure that today we officially unveil the flag of the Confederation. The new flag of the Confederation encapsulates our people and symbols. The colours of the flag keep with tradition, with Gold, Blue and Red remaining. Gold represents the prosperity of our nation, the resources found in our soil and the bountiful gold once extracted from our land. Blue signifies the Atlantic and Pacific, the two oceans which embrace our shores. Lastly, Red symbolizes blood, the blood that our heroes spilt fighting for our freedom and the Andean blood which binds and flows through the veins of every citizen.

The mighty bird on the flag is none other than the majestic Andean condor, also known as "the eternal bird". The condor of the Andes symbolizes the sovereignty and freedom of the Andean people. Its strength and power are formidable, it's size is practically unmatched by any other bird. There is no other bird which is better able to represent the Andean people. The condor grasps a sword and the nation flower, the Chuquirahua rose.

Directly under the bird is the Flagship Schooner General Bolivar, the ship which sailed from Haiti to Venezuela and began the fight for the freedom of our people. The flag on the ship is the personal flag of Simon Bolivar.

Finally, three 7-point stars represent the three equal members of this Confederation - Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela.

The creation of a flag for our Confederation is not the only great milestone of the last year. The new Parliament is a truly great achievement and a large leap forward in the quest for closer integration and ties between our nations. The Parliament, which is made up of elected representatives from all three nations, shall control military, foreign and economic affairs. In the coming year, we hope to expand the powers of the Parliament to tax and immigration, as well as establishing the position of President of the Confederation. I believe that giving these powers to our new Parliament will allow it to work the best for our people, while striking the correct balance between central government and the governments of the three constituent nations.

In regards to foreign affairs, we will first turn to Panama. Our treaty with the British was supposed to only concede the Panama Canal Zone as to allow our British friends to resume where the French left off and construct the Panama Canal. However, due to some confusion and our apparently incapable foreign minister, who is now sacked, all of the state of Panama was ceded to the British. The people of Panama are valued citizens of our nation. We would never willingly abandon them. I am however very pleased to announce we have reached an agreement with our British friends. Panama, minus the Canal Zone, shall be returned to our nation, where it belongs. We must express our gratitude to the British for agreeing to resolve this confusion. Furthermore, we thank them for the construction of a new railroad in our nation which shall hopefully bind our people and lands together.

While on the subject Panama, I shall also outline our plans for the state. Should we be unhindered, we plan to give Panama its own Parliament in 1873. Thus, Panama shall be admitted as the fourth member of our Confederation.

I have more good news to announce in relation to our neighbours. After extensive discussions with Peru and Bolivia in relation to conflicting claims, the creation of a custom union and a warmer relationship between our countries, I am happy to present to the world The Treaty of Guayaquil and announce the creation of The Community of Andean Nations.

The Community of Andean Nations

The German Empire

It is the official position of the German Empire that the actions taken by the Kingdom of Italy against the Ottoman Empire were wholly unwarranted, with neither a proper cause for war nor an official announcement regarding the commencement of hostilities to accompany the deployment of their forces into sovereign Ottoman territory. We are dismayed that the Italian government has abandoned these hallmarks of civilized nations and consider this behavior to be wholly irresponsible and tremendously destabilizing to a region already on the brink of calamity.

Therefore, the German Empire calls upon all belligerent nations currently involved in the Balkan conflict to declare an immediate ceasefire and announce their intentions to participate in the conference proposed by the Russian Republic, so that an equitable solution might be discussed in a proper diplomatic forum. Peace and stability in the Balkans are of the highest priority and these two goals can only be truly achieved through multilateral negotiations.

Bern Conference Attendance

Ladies and Gentlemen,

due to the peace in Europe being threatened and with it trade and security all over the world, the United States will attend as a neutral observer and bring some new found light to enlighten the dark thoughts of the attendents towards the prospects of peace and reason.

After the Darkness comes the Dawn

Citizens of the United States of America,

the darkness of despair and defeat has been lifted. Rjoice now because God send us a symbol, a symbol from the dawn of creation. A symbol for prosperity. We now know that God had known about America when he made the world as we will bring the light to the world and follow our divine purpose. American invention, ideas and engineering will bring forth a new dawn of enlightment to all of mankind. Never before and never after have we witnessed such a demonstration of God's love towards humanity as when the American inventor Edison showed us the light. Such a gift should neither be wasted nor kept for ourselves. It is to be distributed to everyone.

We will light the streets, the shops and the houses. We will fight back the darkness and conquer it. Never again will light be dangerous as it was the case with open fire, candles and gas lights. Mankind takes its rightful places as master of the natural world and arrives in the future. We have conquered earth, now we conquer nature, next we will even triumph against ourselves.

God has blessed the United States of America

Asian Affairs and Indian Despairs

While the rumblings of the Italian-Ottoman war were little more than ideas being tossed around in the highest offices of the Italian Army and the Italian leadership, the Royal Navy was quickly getting to work. As the Princely Rebellion began to take the lives of more and more British Soldiers, quick action was taken by the admiralty. They ordered the complete mobilisation of the British Reserve Fleet, and all non-useable sail-powered ships were to be transformed and turned into transport ships for the Royal Navy, so that they could carry the needed soldiers to India to help suppress the rebellion. Working around the clock, the Royal Navy was poised to leave port in just three months time. All plans were put on hold when the news of the Italian attack, and death of the Fleet Admiral, came to London. Critical plans were delayed nearly a month, causing the beleaguered garrison at Jodhpur to fall, where the Indians quickly moved to establish a presence in Cutch, linking up with the Moselms in Baluchistan, who, after an agreement on what would be achieved, began to work together to achieve a common goal. The British were once again routed in Lahore, where the remainders of the British army in Western India retreated to Delhi, determined to put up a defense against the rebels.

Ships of the British Reserve Navy, these of which were converted into troop transports.

News of this loss, as well as the official Italian apology to the United Kingdom, caused the Royal Navy to steam through the Suez Canal on June 3rd, 1872, heading towards the port of Bombay, where British control was still strong. Quickly unloading soldiers, many of them elite units that have fought in India previously, or regiments of Scottish Highlanders and from the Queen's Coldstream Guards. One of the more peculiar objects, besides weapons, ammunition, supplies, food, and clothes for the Army to use, was large shipments of calcium oxide. The idea was said to have come from high in the Army command, even though it was only used against ships before, the Army command seemed to think it could be used against soldiers as well.

The first reported usage of calcium oxide against the princely soldiers was in Hyderabad, where anti-British sentiments ran high, and threats of an organised resistance were high. The British, coming from Bombay, were reinforced with a few soldiers from the Calcutta Garrison, and they proceeded to coat several buildings and areas with calcium oxide, including the Prince's Palace, and using it to burn it down. Much of the dust went into the air, and into the drinking water, as many of the civilians began coughing, and having trouble breathing. Many started to get abdominal pain, and extreme nausea. It did not help that, at the same time, an outbreak of Cholera slammed the city, killing thousands of people with ease. Everyone blamed the British for such actions, and after street protests, in which the British Army was forced to kill many protestors, they were forced to keep a large garrison in the area to prevent it from revolting any further.

With the news reaching Bombay, General Sir Henry Witham said that, "Under no circumstances, shall we use such an object against the Indian people." His declaration never made it outside of Bombay, and it was reported elsewhere that the British would continue to use this weapon, and that all Indians should "run and hide" from the British when they see them, as they do nothing but bring death and destruction. While many of these anti-British newspapers in India were closed, the damage had been done, as many people began to closely watch and listen for the battles and what the British did in them.
[-10 Prestige to the United Kingdom.]

eclipse1872c.jpg

The London News reporting on the Indian outcry against the British.

While the British began to reorganise their forces for a strike into the North, and to try and relieve the Delhi Garrison, which seemed to be holding out of sheer willpower alone, a shipment of French soldiers sailed through the Suez, much as the British did, and hoped to turn the tide that was current unfolding in Indochina. While the French maintained nearly complete control of French Cochinchina, they had problems in Cambodia and Annam, as their soldiers lead raiding parties into Cochinchina constantly. As the French steamed into Saigon, and unloaded DeViller Guns and men, which quickly began an offensive into Cambodia. The Battle of Phnom Penh lasted for three days, until finally the Cambodians gave up, and turned inland to try and resist the French.

Seizing the opportunity, the French established control over the coastal regions of Cambodia, leaving the remainder of the Cambodian army to camp out in the forests and jungles, hopefully as a method to begin to starve them out of supplies and willpower to resist any longer. An offensive into Annam, however, was far more successful. The city of Cam Ranh stood as the first major block towards French advancement, as the soldiers there were under control of the Vietnamese General Lien Quang Duong, the mastermind of the operation that seemed to be beating the French. He had not, however, expected the DeViller Gun, to be deployed against his soldiers. He had expected to being a wide-scale operation against the French, using reinforcements from northern Annam, he assembled his forces at the base of Chu Mu mountain, hoping to use that as cover, and infiltrate into French Cochinchina through the mountains and the jungle, and take the city of Saigon away from them. He planned on starting his assault in a few days time, when urgent messages were relayed to him, that the French were on the move and had a terrifying new weapon. Confident of his army's ability, he quickly ordered them to move out to defend Cam Ranh, where the expected French assault would take place.

The Battle of Cam Ranh began with elements of the French Navy beginning to shell the city, subduing her normal defenses by the sea. Small-scale landings were refused by the Vietnamese. General Christien Bellefleur of the 1st French Cochinchina Corps, who had served for nearly ten years in this area, quickly proposed a full-frontal assault against the Vietnamese with their DeViller Guns, hoping to break through their lines and destroy their resistance. What they did not know, however, that the entire Vietnamese Army was already concentrated in the city. What was first expected to be an easy win, was complicated as the Vietnamese sent charge after charge against the French lines, hoping, at the very least it seemed, to have them run out of bullets for their DeViller Guns.

It was of no avail, however, as after nearly two weeks of fighting, news was sent to General Bellefleur that the Vietnamese were willing to surrender. It was conveyed to them that this was "The Army of the Nation", and while reports of forces elsewhere were heard, they did not think it was of any significant numbers. The formal surrender was done honourably, with General Lien Quang Duong surrendering his sword to General Bellefleur, who announced that, for the good of the Vietnamese people, the area was under control of the French Empire.

300px-Prise_de_Saigon_18_Fevrier_1859_Antoine_Morel-Fatio.jpg

The French Navy shelling Vietnamese positions at the Battle of Cam Ranh.

While the French only controlled a large portion of the coast, many back in Paris felt that only a small portion of the land should be annexed into French Cochinchina, as it would risk overextending themselves should they attempt to press a claim for the complete annexation of the country. They felt, however, that a strong presence was needed in Cochinchina, both against the Vietnamese and other foreign powers. A proposal was agreed upon by members of the government, which was presented to Emperor Napoleon III, that the city of Qui Nhơn become a border city, with the border extending through the highlands of the country, and linking up with Cambodia, which most certainly would be annexed due to their recent aggression towards France. With the Emperor's approval, and orders to the Army, it was expected complete control of the area would be established by late November.

Even as the battles were raging in Indochina, up north in China, the Republic of Russia and the Chinese Empire both entered into a new, mutually exclusive, trading rights agreement. Russians quickly moved into Manchuria, where they were granted special rights and free trade. This large delegation quickly set up shops in Lüshun City, which took the name of Port Arthur, as well as in places around Manchuria, and in China proper.

One of the more important changes was in the City of Blagoveshchensk, where roads were quickly extended southwards into Manchuria to facilitate trade going up and down the river, to be sent to the West. Blagoveshchensk quickly became a major trading hub, and nearly one month after the signing of the treaty, it began to saw a massive amount of wealth flow through her borders. The Siberian Route as well, which would help to take the trading traffic from the Amur River and various other rivers that connect to it, was expanded and maintained, with settlements being expanded in Irkutsk, Tomsk, Omsk, Perm, Moscow, and a large range of other cities along the way. While this was a massive investment, it paled in comparison of the amount of money that began to flow into Moscow and the Russian Republic.

800px-Irkutsk_pereprava.jpg

Crossing the Angara River in Irkutsk, bringing goods from China to the West.

The usage of rivers, barges, and steamships in the Republic was nothing new, but the sheer scale of the amount of goods that began to flow through it was marveled upon by the Governing Senate, who, when they first received the initial reports of the amount of goods flowing through from the barge workers, they ordered an immediate increase in pay, as thousands and thousands of pounds worth of goods seemed to flow every single day, dwarfing Russian trade with the remainder of Europe. It was estimated, although some say generously, that the total value of all Russian European trade, stationed at £6,500,000.00 annually, was nothing compared to the expected impact of the Chinese trade, which was estimated to stand at £9,500,000 annually for the next year. Such an amount of value and money was unheard of, and if true, would surpass the total amount of trade revenue gained by the entire British Empire by nearly half of a million pounds.

The news was not met kindly in the rest of Europe. The Republic, which seemed to be managing the country much more efficiently and properly than the Tsar ever did, suddenly became the world's focal talking point. In London, newspapers ran speculation of Russian ships being noticed in India, shoving British merchants out of their routes. In Paris, talks were being made that Russian ships were seen moving, in massive numbers, to the United States to attempt to muscle European powers out of that country. American newspapers responded with similar frantic articles, claiming that, "We have no seen more ships flying the Russian Flag than ever before. Reports are coming from the Confederate States in Richmond, that all of their trade was controlled now by the Russian Republic."

Such frantic panic was unwarranted, as the Russians focused on trading in China. European trade actually declined for the Republic, as well as American trade, as more ships were sent to be focused on the Odessa - Chinese trade route, which was far more lucrative than sailing to New York or Charleston. Even so, there was talk in the House of Commons to close all Russians ships from India, citing that the war ongoing was bad for stability and that the Russians could potentially dislodge them from India.

In the height of the Russian Panic, the actions of the Republic were closely watched, as the government announce the reformation of the Cossacks, special military units that could be deployed to fight anywhere and be used as police work. Alarms immediately set off in Paris, Berlin, Wien, and London, as the Republic announced the total numbers of new forces drafted into the Army. Standing at around two hundred thousand, these Cossacks were divided up and sent off. While the details from the Republic were sparse, it would seem the old Cossack Hosts were reestablished, where they would live and give soldiers to the Republic. What was first lambasted by the Europeans as a complete invasion of China, Siberian Cossacks tore through rebellious areas of western China, putting down many of the rebellions, allowing Chinese rule to return to these areas, while at the same time, upon their withdraw, the Emirate of Kashgaria and the Xinjiang Khanate were proclaimed, and quickly recognized by both China and Russia.
[+253,503 Low-Cost Regulars to Russia.]

As fighting continued in India, the news of Russia's seemingly forceful reentry into the international community began to spark panic amongst the forces on the ground in India. The Delhi Garrison, after months of fighting, was finally forced to surrender, retreating all the way across India to Calcutta, where they took over garrison duty there. The Bombay Army, commanded by a General who lacked higher critical thinking abilities, instead sent them to suppress the Travancore revolt, while the British in Delhi died by the hundreds. The revolt was crushed, and what was proclaimed a huge victory was dwarfed in comparison to the grim situation in Northwest India.

General Maximilian Wallwork, the "Hero" of Travancore was ordered by London to re-take Delhi, and link up with their Afghani allies, who were notably silent about their support for the United Kingdom, in hopes that they would begin their invasion of Punjab and Kashmir, as was hoped. While the orders demanded that he secure Population Centres, he felt he had better ideas. Ordering his men to begin to burn anything of use to the Indians, he quickly became known as "Wallwork the Destroyer", and his name sent fear into all of the Indians. Upon reaching Indore, he ordered the population shot unless they did not disclose the information pertaining to the Princely Army.

The information was never given to the British.

Continuing on, General Wallwork moved to secure Surat from the Princely Army, where he met them on the outskirts of a village. He ordered the village leveled, to the best of their ability, with his artillery, and then to advance into the village to take the Princely Army hostage. The information they received, however, was that the army retreated to Surat, and the city they just set under a four hour artillery barrage did not have a single soldier in it.

Undaunted, he continued on to Surat, where, after a quick battle, captured the city from the Princely Army, which was forced to once again retreat North. They were expected to be holed up in the city of Ajmer, where the British once had a garrison, and General Wallwork immedietly set off, burning the crops, destroying the livestock, and ripping up what little infrastructure, such as the railway system and telegraph lines, that existed, to ensure no one knew of his movements.

The fifty thousand strong Army finally heard the news of the massive Russian assaults that were taking place nearly two hundred miles away from the borders of Kashmir, which suggested that they were skilled in mountain warfare, and even had the ability to cross into Kashmir and begin an assault against the British who were in to position to defend it if the Russians established themselves there. The British army then began to move, far faster than their supply lines, to Ajmer. The Princely Army, which had been waiting for them to do such an action, came out of hiding, nearly tripling in number of the British Army. General Wallwork was said to have been the first target of the Princely Army, where their cavalry ignored the British regulars, and slaughter him and his command staff. The Army, surrounded on all sides, attempted to fight for a break out, but it was too late. The Indians, returning the very same kindness and generosity that the British had been showing from their campaigns in Indore, Surat, and to Ajmer, crushed the army without any hesitation.
[-52,503 Regulars to the United Kingdom]

A single British soldier was sent to Bombay by the Princely Army under the White Flag. He was given a message, that simply and plainly told the British that they would be independent, no matter what Butcher they sent to subdue them. As the summer began to fade away, and the Republic of Russia flexed its muscles, the British Garrison in Bombay did not seem likely to hold up against any attack by the Princely Armies, and three major defensive fortifications were quickly established. Bombay, Nagpur, and Calcutta were deemed the few most important holding points of British India, and as much attention would be put into them as needed.

The House of Commons and the British Public, both hearing of the events from Russia and India, became increasingly wary of their ability to defend against Russia, which seemed to be pouring out of every single seem that held it together. Anti-Russian sentiment ran higher than before, and the House called upon Prime Minister Disraeli to take "Instant and Immediate Action in China" against the Russians, saying that if, under the worst nightmares of every Briton, that Russia was able to claim India for her own, or even trade there on a large scale, than the same Russia that defeated the legions of Emperor Napoleon I would soon reemerge, staking its claim as the single most dominate European power.

THE UNITED KINGDOM
of Great Britain and Ireland

Her Majesty expresses a simple message to all of the Empire:
Fear not, Britons, for your country, but fight on for her. The British Army shall restore order to India, and the rebels shall be crushed in their entirety. Sons of Britannia, you must take up arms, to defend our Empire against this new rebellion, as the Princely States attempt to throw off our power. Make us proud.
For God, Queen, and Country.

The situation in Indochina had to be resolved and so it was. We felt a threat was forming against French interests and a decision was made to act. The fighting did not go quite as planned but security has been increased and the threat defeated. An honorable surrender ended the primary fighting and peace will shortly be restored.
