National Mourning Week

My beloved people,

two days ago His Holiness, Pope Benedictus VX., died in his sleep following a short period of illness. I like to reflect on the life and achievements of this great man who will leave our lives a little darker and emptier. Born in Genua before the Italian Unification his Holiness rose to the throne of St. Peter in 1914. His Holiness was a man of peace and humility, a man of unmatched piety and a friend of all of humanity. The Kingdom of Czechoslovakia will be forever in his debt because of his free food distribution in the war which all warweary and hungry populations received. Even against the voice of thunder of the cannons his calm words of peace and faith reached our hearts.

His calls for peace were sadly largely unheard but we tried to make up for this when peace was achieved. We heeded his calls for an end of conscription and made an army full of patriots serving of their own free will. We instituted the moral force of right, true liberty and carefully examined claims and grievances which we addressed in the peace treaty. In the end his humility achieved what the Republic of Italy granted: The establishment of the Holy See as a souvereign subject in international affairs. Again we are in deep thanks to the Italian government for this. Sadly enough though that his health did not allow His Holiness to cherish his new found freedom long enough.

Though the world grew darker there is a chance for continuation of his work on a global scale. A chance to bring the light of humility, of peace and justice to the world and all those who live oppressed and in danger of death, all those who are hungry and deseased. You are all beloved by God, for all of you Jesus Christ died and the Holy Spirit grants measure in all affairs of mankind. Thus we wish the to-be-elected sucessor strenght of faith, love of humanity and undomitable spirit in defending the peoples of the world against undeserved poverty, terror and tyranny.

For the Kingdom of Czechoslovakia the archbishop-cardinal of Bohemia-Moravia Josef Beran and the bishop-cardinal of Slovakia Andrej Hlinka will participate in the papal conclave and though we are contend with every Pope elected as we have faith in the reason of the assembled representatives and live in hope of salvation.

I will now resume praying for the immortal soul of Benedictus VX. and may he find rest in the arms of the Father above

Milena I., Queen of Czechoslovakia

People of Poland, I believe I an speak for us all when I say that today we mourn a great man, Pope Benedict XV has achieved much in this lifetime and I hope that he will finlly get the rest and rewards he deserve in the next. The President has also signed the necessary paperwork for Poland's own Cardinal Edmund Dalbor and Cardinal Aleksander Kakowski to travel to Rome and participate in the coming Papal Conclave.

~His Excellency, Jozef Pilsudski, Marshal of Poland, Minister of War of the Republic of Poland, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Poland, Interior Minister of the Republic of Poland, Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Defence Forces

As long as the Holy See continues with its oppressive practises, such as the fact that it harbours and maintains the criminal organisation informally known as the "Roman Inquisition", or more formally Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition, I can not give my blessing to any Romanian Cardinals that wish to travel to Rome. That being said, we are a free country of free men, and it is every individual's responsibility to decide for himself wheter to support or reject such an insititution.

King Ferdinand I. of Romania, Protector of the Constitution

Her Majesty's Government is saddened by the passing of the Bishop of Rome, Benedict XV. We are saddened infinitely more, however, by the fact that the death of one man has attracted far more international attention than the deaths of thousands of men in the Pacific Ocean. This conflict has so escaped the notice of the world community that our newspapers have dubbed it "the silent struggle". And we are struggling: the Indies are awash with blood and flame; the Pacific littered with debris; and the fields carpeted with the fallen. And still the world looks away.

It has been too often the case in history that man perceives a danger to be distant, and so pays it no heed until it is already upon him. But this conflict is not just a struggle between this United Kingdom and its allies. It is a struggle for the forces of liberalism and democracy against hegemony and imperialism. It is a struggle to uphold the Pacific - the most vital ocean in the global economy - as a zone of free trade, enterprise and mutual prosperity. The repercussions of Japanese aggression have already been felt far from the Indies, from the civil war in Asia to the insurgency in Indochina. And this is only the beginning. If Japanese expansionism is not checked here, then the entire Pacific shall be reduced to a Japanese lake and all of Asia shall succumb to their supremacy.

In 1911, when the Qing tyrant sought to subdue the international settlements, this United Kingdom coordinated the campaign for their relief and committed half of its available armed forces to the cause. We possessed no settlements of our own; we were motivated solely by a respect for international law and justice, as well as a desire to support our European neighbours in a time of crisis. Thousands of Dutchmen died to restore order in China and uphold the rights of our allies. We received no payment for services rendered and secured no territorial gains. In return for this act of altruism, we expected only that the other nations of the world would reciprocate in our own time of crisis. Yet only the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the Australian Federation, nations similarly threatened, have offered any assistance. The nations of Europe - those who we sacrificed so much for in 1911 - have not even spared a kind word, never mind volunteers or armaments. This United Kingdom is left to fend for itself, against a power stronger in manpower and martial capacity than even the Qing Empire.

We thus implore the international community: do not abandon us in our darkest hour.

Her Majesty, Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies

((I unfortunately will not have access to a computer for an undetermined amount of time in the future, so I will be unable to send orders or otherwise interact in WiR for the time being. That said, I'm not quitting, only informing everyone that I won't be here and I'm not sure how long it will be until I am.

Sorry for any inconveniences this may cause anyone.))

People of Ukraine. Our great Republic it seems is not as great as we hoped. Our economy is in trouble and our nation divided over the constitution. The Army is unpaid and elements have deserted to form their own Communist bands of rebels who infest the countryside. However from this day forth we will improve this situation. Already we are drawing up plans to ensure that our debt is repaid, our economy survives and our army is paid once more. I call for those who have joined the Ukrainian workers and peasants army to return to their posts as payment will arrive soon. We are not yet too far down the road of our own destruction their is still one last turn off we can and will take. Our nation has fought hard to be free. The heroes of the Ukrainian Free army fought and died to free Ukrainian from foreign oppression. Bohdan Khmelnytsky fought long and hard to free Ukraine but despite the Deluge washing away the old order of the Poles the new and equally oppressive order of the Russian merely filled the void. But Now Russia is weak and divided. We must move through this difficulty together and from then we can become a truly great nation. We must move forward. On wards to Ukraine's victory.

The Chilean government will be sending a delegation to the coronation of His Imperial Majesty, Pedro III, led by myself. We hope that relations between our two nations will grow even stronger.

It saddens me to see, that what I stood for has brought such a large crisis upon the people of Greece, my fellow countrymen, all of us, and thus, I ask you, why do you fight, and I must ask myself, why do I fight?

Am I not the one, along with all of you, who now stands against the odds? Am I not the one, who side by side with all of you has to face a threat to my home, friends and family? Am I not the one, who if he stands will face persecution and/or death?

But I can tell you, why i fight. The soldiers of the Yugoslav Army, ask them, and they will tell you some reason like "the greater good", "our fatherland", "for crown and country", an abstract thing they never speak of when at peace. But we fight, for our right of self-determination, not as a a group, but as individuals, every single one of us. If I am forced to abandon my ideas, thoughts and ideals, will I personally be able to face this humiliation and live? No, I would rather stand and fight, for my right to speak, for my right to decide upon my very own future, rather than living a life decided upon. I fight, till my last breath because i want to, because I decided, that as long as I am living, this reactionary coup d'etat will not succeed. I fight, because my very own ideals force me to, the possibility to go to vote, to have a voice and to speak freely and if they attempt to take them from me, then let them know, that the only way they will stop me, from speaking and fighting, is death.

Thus, my fellow countrymen, I must ask you, why do you fight? And if you can find a single better reason then such an abstract term as "crown and country",then you know that you should stand here with me, and that we must all carry on the fight, the very same burden in this war to defend liberty.

This year has been one of success for Britannia. We have supplied those forces attempting to stop the cancer of Communism from spreading, and hope that these supplies shall be enough to win them success in their wars. The situation in Spain, however, is nothing but a blight upon all the people of the Iberian peninsula. Durruti has shown himself to be nothing but a traitor to his people and nation, and we offer the Queen Dowager, Maria Christina, and the young King asylum in Britain to form a government-in-exile, if they find themselves unable to reach Scandinavia, as Gibraltar shall remain a friendly base for the rightful government of Spain. We also hereby remove our recognition of the French Communes, as they have shown themselves to be nothing more than a restoration of the Empire of Napoleon, annexing land after land as they invade the Iberian peninsula.

Like every nation has shown, we mourn the recent death of Pope Benedict XV, but mourn is all we can do while men continue to die in the thousands across the world. Though they have refused to return to Parliament in London, we shall allow the Catholic Cardinals of Ireland to travel to the Vatican City and take part in the selection of the next Pope, as we care for and respect the beliefs of the Irish, loyal and respectable citizens of the United Kingdom. We also announce that celebrations shall be held in London for Prince George, soon to be King Väinö, before he travels to the Kingdom of Finland in the Empire of Scandinavia for his coronation, where the entire Royal Family shall be in attendance for this event, alongside reporters from the BBC, who shall relay the event across the world.

The situation in Greece has deteriorated to the point of complete and utter chaos, even spilling into Bulgaria, who had hoped to safe guard the lives of the Ethnic Bulgarians living in Greece. No nation can condone the war these Technocrats have brought to Greece, and after discussion with the King of Yugoslavia, we have decided to deploy elements of the Royal Navy Mediterranean Squadron to aid the Yugoslavian Navy in breaking the Technocratic blockade and securing aid for the Greek King. If, God forbid, the Technocrats reach the outskirts of Athens, and the Greek King is needed to be evacuated, these ships shall stand by to protect him and move him to a safer, loyalist-controlled Greek city.

We have entered talks with our holdings in the Middle East, and the results have not been a total disappointment. The demonstrators in Anatolia have remained peaceful, but stalwart in their desire to leave, and as such, we are willing to enter talks with the Ottomans for their release to the Sultan, though hopefully with an agreement that will see both sides in our holdings happy. And though we may enter talks with the Ottomans about these territories in Anatolia, we shall not enter into talks for Kuwait, as the people of this protectorate have clearly shown their desire to stay within the British Empire, and we shall not go against their wishes.

For the complaint from the Government of the Dominion of Palestine, we can only say that the Royal Army was never contacted to send training instructors and organization experts to Palestine. Now that we have been informed about the desire to reform and improve the current Palestinian army, we shall send what personnel we can to aid Palestine, though with the current war against Canada and Japan we may only be able to send but a few experts, slowing the process, but getting it started never-the-less. In Yemen, we sen an official condemnation of their destruction of the ships of the Royal Navy, a declaration of war in no simple terms. These ships were simply transporting personnel and equipment to aid them in their defensive war, seeing as how Yemen has been a protectorate of the British Empire for many years now, and this only serve to increase the insult Yemen has sent to His Majesty. Though the British people are outraged by this action, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland does not wish war, and so simply asks Yemen to apologize for the destruction of our ships, as we hope it was nothing more than a mistake of recognition for threatening nation.

In Quebec, we have pushed slightly passed the border into Canada, ensuring that this aggression by Canada shall not hurt the people of Quebec, and we have utterly destroyed the Canadian Navy in their mistaken attack on our supply convoys. With these victories, we sincerely hope the foolish Canadian government will see reason and finally come to the peace table, recognizing the independence of Quebec and their inclusion into the British Empire as a sovereign Dominion. Let us end this war before more men are uselessly killed across the fields of Canada. Further south, I announce that His Majesty, King George V, and Her Highness, Queen Consort Mary of Teck, shall be in attendance for the coronation of Don Pedro III, welcoming the new Emperor of Brazil after the sudden and tragic loss of the inspirational Empress Isabel, whom we all mourn. If the Don so chooses, BBC reporters will be in attendance as well, relaying this historic event for Brazil across the world and allowing those citizens of Brazil unable to attend His coronation the chance to hear it and show their support for his coming reign.

In Africa, it is a shame that the young American Commonwealth would collapse so suddenly, but we welcome these new independent Republic to the world stage, and hope that diplomatic relations and trade ties can be established between the United Kingdom and its Dominions and the Republics of Angola, Congo, and Gabon. And with Kenya firmly peaceful once again, the construction of the Cape-to-Cairo can once again continue, with its expansion into German East Africa and the Congo if their government so wish, expanding trade across the Continent and promoting cooperation between all the peoples, no matter their ethnicity, of Africa. This cooperation, however, will see itself tested in South Africa, as the situation these continues to grow worse. We send our concerns to the South African government, and offer what aid we can to help them bring peace and stability back to their people and country. In Madagascar, with the recent Greek Civil War and our offer of aid to the Greek King, we shall be withdrawing our troops and administration, and handing over Northern Madagascar to the colonial government of Southern Madagascar.

In Asia, the situation across the region continues to shows the destructiveness of both Communism and the Japanese aggression. The Wu Emperor is now a hostage in all but name in his former capital, and we hope that he stays safe from the Godless Communists the occupy the majority of his Empire. In the south, we hope that the Republic of China can recuperate from the disastrous loss of their army in time to prevent their complete slaughter by the Communists, which is surely the only goal they have in sight for the free peoples of the RoC. In the Pacific, we shall continue our war against the Japanese, aiding our Dutch allies and destroying the Japanese Navy. The Japanese shall learn why the Royal Navy owns and guards the High Seas, and the world shall see the power of Air Power when our new Escort Carrier is put to action against the Japanese ships. So long as the Japanese continue to occupy sovereign British and Dutch territory, any and all ships from Japan or waving the flag of Japan shall be sunk throughout the Pacific Ocean.

-Robert Cecil, Prime Minister of His Majesty's Government

The Brazilian Empire will gadly welcome the reporters of the BBC to Rio de Janeiro. I also thank all those who have decided to attend my coronation ceremony.

The Empire of Scandinavia

Scandinavia is pleased to hear of the coronation of Dom Pedro, and although His Imperial Majesty is unfortunately too busy with affairs of state to attend; His Majesty King Haakon of Norway will represent him there. We will also be pleased to host the Royal Family and BBC in our glorious empire.

We are saddened to hear the death of the good Empress Isabel I of Brazil. She was truly an amazing woman, who had a long and fruitful life. We will be attending the coronation of the heir-apparent Dom Pedro, if he is willing to have our company.

~ President Joseph Bolamba, of the Free State of the Congo

The Chilean National Radio Network will also send a team to cover the coronation of Pedro III; the people of Chile will be witness to this momentous occasion in South America.

The Papal Conclave of 1924

As Cardinals from around the world gathered in Rome to discuss and deliberate on a new Pope, thousands stood and watched, and waited, for the news of the new Pope. This was the first Papal Election, and which was allowed by the Government of the Holy See, that News Reporters were allowed to remain, and it was being broadcast live, around the world, using the BBC Radio. Cardinals from South America, England, Ireland, Italy, the United States, Quebec, Congo, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary, poured into the church at St. Peters, to begin their discussions.

Day by day dragged on, with no real agreement reached. The two-thirds majority needed was not gained by the end of the fifth day, and it was on the sixth day, that finally - a pope was elected. It was announced to the world, that on May 19th, 1924, that Cardinal János Csernoch of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Esztergom was elected to become the next leader of the Catholic Church. Upon his announcement to the world, he decided to take the name Pope Gregory XVII.

The new Pope Gregory XVII.

This news was a massive shock to the world. Pope Gregory XVII was the first non-Italian Pope in hundreds of years, and his election was an upset. Foul play was even suspected of the cardinals by some. The reaction, however, was most profound in Hungary itself. The people were ecstatic that their man was elected to become the Holy Father. Hungarians rejoiced, and the government declared a day of celebration and prayer, to welcome the new Pope to the world. While the millions of Catholics around the world were surprised at this election, many waited to see what new changes the Pope would bring, becoming the second head of the new Government of the Holy See.
