National Mourning Week
My beloved people,
two days ago His Holiness, Pope Benedictus VX., died in his sleep following a short period of illness. I like to reflect on the life and achievements of this great man who will leave our lives a little darker and emptier. Born in Genua before the Italian Unification his Holiness rose to the throne of St. Peter in 1914. His Holiness was a man of peace and humility, a man of unmatched piety and a friend of all of humanity. The Kingdom of Czechoslovakia will be forever in his debt because of his free food distribution in the war which all warweary and hungry populations received. Even against the voice of thunder of the cannons his calm words of peace and faith reached our hearts.
His calls for peace were sadly largely unheard but we tried to make up for this when peace was achieved. We heeded his calls for an end of conscription and made an army full of patriots serving of their own free will. We instituted the moral force of right, true liberty and carefully examined claims and grievances which we addressed in the peace treaty. In the end his humility achieved what the Republic of Italy granted: The establishment of the Holy See as a souvereign subject in international affairs. Again we are in deep thanks to the Italian government for this. Sadly enough though that his health did not allow His Holiness to cherish his new found freedom long enough.
Though the world grew darker there is a chance for continuation of his work on a global scale. A chance to bring the light of humility, of peace and justice to the world and all those who live oppressed and in danger of death, all those who are hungry and deseased. You are all beloved by God, for all of you Jesus Christ died and the Holy Spirit grants measure in all affairs of mankind. Thus we wish the to-be-elected sucessor strenght of faith, love of humanity and undomitable spirit in defending the peoples of the world against undeserved poverty, terror and tyranny.
For the Kingdom of Czechoslovakia the archbishop-cardinal of Bohemia-Moravia Josef Beran and the bishop-cardinal of Slovakia Andrej Hlinka will participate in the papal conclave and though we are contend with every Pope elected as we have faith in the reason of the assembled representatives and live in hope of salvation.
I will now resume praying for the immortal soul of Benedictus VX. and may he find rest in the arms of the Father above
Milena I., Queen of Czechoslovakia
