After the Greyjoys were put down Robert baratheon took the iron isles for himself. So when he died each of his children gained a claim on throne, isles and north.

War of the North and Trident

Called to War

Bryton Badics
(December 311)

“I know you want to be a great hero like father was, but war is no game brother. Trust me, during the recent war against the Westlands I saw how horrible it is. War is no joking matter and we can not give the army of the Vale to you just because you are our father’s eldest son. The army will need to be led by a great warrior who had seen true war before not just minor battles.” When Gwayne stopped speaking Bryton could not help but wonder if he truly was going to make the same mistake twice. He was good with a sword, but he had no clue how to lead an army. Even worse the Lady Barbara had given his brother permission to decide on all matter of this upcoming war.

She saw him as a great war hero since he marched off to war with thirty thousand of her people. When he returned he only had lost a thousand of these men. He claimed they had died in battle, but all the rest of the world knew he never even met the enemy. Those thousand had probably deserted so at least some of the Valeman would take part in the war. Just as he feared Gwayne said, “So I will take our soldiers across the ocean to put down Harbert Baratheon of the Iron Islands. We shall sail for Pyke in three months.”

“Pyke? Harbert is in Summerhall not Pyke.”

“Oh brother. Harbert Baratheon is Lord of the Iron Islands and Pyke has been the seat of the Lord of the Iron Islands since the fall of King Harren. Why would a man live where no ocean was let alone a river and name himself Lord of the Iron Islands?”

Was his brother truly this stupid? No matter the Iron Islands would fall quickly enough to the armies of the Vale. “Why wait three months? It would only take maybe a month to march across the Riverlands and begin ferrying our men to the Islands.”

This brought a gasp from his brother. “March across the Riverlands? You want to lead our army and you suggest marching across the Riverlands? How do you expect to get across now that Edmure Tully has joined his army to that of Maric and Harbert Baratheon?”

“By sword. We send the fleet around to meet us at Kanet while we march our men through to Riverrun. With such a small fleet we can only send about two thousand men at a time to the Islands. While they are being ferried to Pyke we can capture Riverrun and maybe even Lord Tully himself.”

“Again another mistake big brother. This action you suggest would be even more foolish then attacking Summerhall. We can not fight both the Riverlands and the Iron Islands at the same time. Also should we arrive at Riverrun then Jon Lannister may think we mean to fight him too. We certainly don’t want to fight him again after I saw him lose his crown only last year.”

When Bryton tried to say something to that Gwayne lifted his hand for silence. It took all his strength not to draw his sword and cut his brother down here and now. He was Castellan of the Vale, Lord of Strongsong, husband to the Princess of Dorne, and the elder brother, but he had to stand here in silence while Gwayne picked through some grapes. As he watched him inspect each one he could not stop thinking of drawing his sword. If he was certain he could kill him he probably would have. The only problem though was that Gwayne had his own sword within arms reach and he was the better swordsmen. Ser Gwayne had spent far more time with him since he was named after him.

Finally, after what felt like days Gwayne picked a grape and popped it in his mouth. “Delicious. Now what were you saying?”

“I wanted to know where you planned on waiting while you sent two thousand of our fifty thousand men around Westeros to the Iron Islands?”

“Well Midlor Point of course.”

Midlor Point? Midlor Point!!! The smallest of the Fingers which had no real port nor city. The men would starve there within a month. Unable to help it any longer Bryton walked out of his brother’s solar. He would not let his brother lead them to ruin. His father had worked to hard to make the family and the Vale as strong as it was. He would not let them fall.

Certainly did, great update as per usual. It seems Gwayne may be finding that power he was seeking, although I suppose at the moment it is still somewhat through his wife. Also, found it interesting that Bryton considers Gwayne to be the better swordsman. I know Gwayne is tall, but I thought that Bryton was the better fighter. I guess it's hard to be a son of Paul Badics and not be a skilled fighter.

I hope that's not true

Paul was master, Terrance is poor, Bryton is skilled and Gwayne is master as well. Gwayne isn't tall only Terrance was tall.

Just a Pawn

Jonella Badics
(March 312)

“I will not marry him. I refuse to marry,” she screamed at her older brother.

“You will marry him. You leave tomorrow with Terrance and he will escort you to your new husband.”

“Like I told father, I will not marry. I certainly won’t allow Terrance to be the one who takes me to my husband. I am a daughter of Lord Paul Badics and I demand a better match.”

“A better match? You will be marrying the son of Tywin Lannister. Your children will rule Casterly Rock just as mine will rule Dorne, Gwayne’s will rule the Vale and Caleigh’s will sit the Iron Throne. Now tell me how this is not a good match?”

She had nothing to say to that. “I still refuse to allow Terrance to be the one to take me to my new husband. I would almost rather have our sister Tyana take me then him. It’s not fair that you always treat him better then me.”

Realizing she had said the wrong thing Jonella saw the fire in her brother’s eyes. “She is not our sister! She is nothing more then Tyana Stone!” After a pause he yelled, “Do you hear me?” Nodding quickly she waited until the fire in his eyes went away. “Terrance is not treated better. If anything he got the short end of the stick. Probably because he refuses to stop calling Tyana our sister.

“Now think about it. Father had five children.” Lifting his hand in front of her he counted off each finger starting with the thumb. “I was married to the heir of Dorne and inherited all of father’s lands, titles and wealth. Caleigh became Queen to two different Kings. Gwayne is the Lord of the Vale and soon you will be the Lady of the Westlands.” At last he came to his pinkie. “Then there is Terrance. He is a knight. He is the Lord of Heart’s Home and his children will succeed him, should he have any with his southern wife. He is married to the youngest daughter of Cristan Moore who’s brother served in the Kingsguard. Lastly he is the Commander of my armies when I am not in the field. Now tell me how he is the most privileged?”

Again she had nothing to say. With her head down she said, “I will be ready to leave in the morning.”

I hope you don't mind me saying, but to see how your writing skill has improved since "The White Book" is really amazing. I really liked "The White Book", but this story has really showcased your incredible ability for character development and descriptive writing.

I found Bryton's hatred of his bastard sister, Tyana, in this chapter quite interesting. Plus added points for staying correct lorewise to Terrence's last chapter.

Really well done!

I don't mind at all. 'The White Book' was not supposed to have a lot of character development. It was a list of what men did like the actual book in the asoiaf lore world.

I'm glad you like my character development. Do you have a favorite character so far? Mine is Terrance or Gwayne.

Why are you a fan of Bryton if you don't mind me asking?

Well, like I said, I thought he was the better swordsman. Other than that though, I feel that out of all the Badics, he really is his father's son. Terrance is more the gentle giant but still a half decent general. Gwayne is a great swordsman but lacks command ability and common sense. He also comes across vain, arrogant and power-seeking

A Fish not a Ser?

Ballabar Badics
(August 312)

Staring across the table at his father he could not help but feel great disappointment. He was to be a pawn just like his Aunt Jonella then. Would it work though? After her marriage to Jon Lannister, he had joined his armies to the King and began shipping thousands of men to the Iron Islands. That was different though then marrying your eldest daughter to somebody.

Then again was this Serra Tully even worth being married to the future Prince of Dorne? Would she give him sons to follow in his own legacy like mother had given father? It did not really matter though since he was not really being asked. He had expected he was being called to his father to speak of his knighting ceremony, but it appeared it was truly to talk of this farce of a marriage.

He was no warrior like his father or his uncles, but at this moment he almost wish he had gone along to escort his Aunt to the Westlands or with Gwayne to Pyke. Instead of him going Terrance had decided to bring Davos Storm along with him. And of course father had sent his little puppy Arstan to ensure his sister was safe.

Any day now they would be making the return trip. The only difference was that they would not be coming back here. They were going to strike the Riverlands from the west. Realizing he hadn’t said anything in some time Ballabar finally answered, “I will take the fist to bed for you.”

Two Goodbyes

Bryton Badics
(April 313)

It was so hard to watch his son leave him like this. The boy was now of age and married to Lady Serra Tully, but he was summoned south boy his living grandfather, Doran Martell, Prince of Dorne. With him he took a few knights to escort him, his wife, and the box that held his own dead wife.

She had been so beautiful and given him three strong healthy sons. Though he had not chosen her for himself he had loved her deeply. He only wished that he could have brought some happiness into her life. All she wanted to do was return to her home in Dorne. He had told her that one day they would take some time, go to Gulltown, and take a ship to her home.

They would meet her side of the family and see where she grew up. She would show him the beauty of Dorne and their sons would play with his cousins in the Water Gardens. It never happened though. It was all Tyrion Lannisters fault too. With King Robert’s death his father forbade him to go to Dorne or else it would appear as if the Vale supported its rebellion. Then with his father’s death he became so preoccupied with putting an end to the War of the Three Fawns he never went. Now it was to late.

The least he could do was return his wife’s body back to her home. And now that Ballabar is heir he should go too. If the King or his enemies capture his son to try and force Doran Martell to rejoin the Seven Kingdoms he could never forgive himself. He would be safe in Dorne.

An uneaten meal

Terrance Badics
(August 313)

Looking out over the enemy Terrance could no help but feel joy. They still hadn’t seen them yet. “Who all do you see, Davos?”

Moving up beside him Davos said, “There are the Lords Ellery Piper, Hibald Wayn, and Jason Mallister. Of course there is also Lord Tully himself who has come north to help Maric Baratheon with his knights Ser Clement and Ser Adil. More importantly they only number maybe three thousand. A full two thousand less then our own men. At least it was until you gave Arstan command of all of our infantry. That only leaves our seven hundred cavalry.”

“If we can just capture Lord Tully here then our victory is assured. Without Tully’s army there is nothing between the King and his little brother. He will no longer have to ship his men north around the Vale.” After a few more moments of inspecting the enemies army Terrance rode back down the hill to his seven hundred cavalry. Position in this valley his men could not be seen nor heard by the Tully soldiers.

Still walking beside him Davos asked, “Why did you send Arstan off with all of our infantry? There is no chance that we will be able to defeat these men with just a few hundred horsemen. They will make a good show, but so long as Lord Tully forms a shieldwall then we will lose.”

Placing his hand upon the much shorter man’s shoulder Terrance smiled and said, “Do not worry friend. I will not allow my sister to become a widow this young.” It was obvious by his stare that this hadn’t even crossed Davos’ mind. He had been worried about the men and now he was worried about himself. “Get yourself something to eat. It will be time soon enough.”

The man still looked uncomfortable, but he did what he was asked to do. When his own stomach growled Terrance decided he should follow his own advice. Looking through his men he found two of the more elderly soldiers eating together. Ser Alesander and Ser Umfred had been knights of the Corbray’s since the time of Lyn and Lyonel Corbray’s grandfather had been Lord of Heart’s Home. They were both good knights who skill did not fail them even though they grew older. More importantly the two men had pledged themselves to him now that he was Lord of Heart’s Home.

Sitting beside them the two nodded. It appeared one of them had caught a rabbit while they had been camped here. Umfred handed over one of the cooked legs, but before he could bite into it a red streak in the sky caught his attention. It was the sign. Jumping to his feet he bellowed, “To horse, to horse! Men to horse!” With that call every man quickly mounted the horses they had picketed to the ground near them. They did not know what was planned, but these men were the veterans who had survived the Vale wars. They were his father’s elite troops and now that he was dead they followed him. He served as his father’s squire for eight years. He was there when Heart’s Home fell to him, he marched north to help put down Howland Reed, he saw the Belmore army crushed between his father and older brother, and now here he was the Commander of Strongsong’s army.

Quickly forming the lines Terrance ensured all his men were behind the hill. They were split into two lines. The front was led by Ser Davos with two hundred men while he commanded the second five hundred. Ser Davos was a tourney knight who had never seen battle before, but he had requested him along anyways. His sister loved him and if he could prove himself in battle then maybe she would get at least some respect from their elder brother. Just in case he did not perform well he had placed both Ser Alesander and Ser Umfred in his line.

While they stood there he began to hear the rumble he had been waiting for. It slowly grew louder and louder. With each passing second it seemed as if it would soon overwhelm them when finally the cause of the noise showed itself. Hundreds of the Tully men came bursting around the hill heading in the opposite direction of them. As he hoped they still did not notice them and were concentrating on trying to get back to Riverrun. At their head was Edmure Tully. Looked like they wouldn’t be capturing him today.

Giving pause for a few more seconds Terrance nodded his head to a man at his side. As Terrance watched the man lifted a horn to his mouth and blew a great rumbling noise. And with it Davos’ line charged at the fleeing men who were already pass the hill. His own line turned at the hill to face head on at the thousands of men who were fleeing. It looked as if these men would envelop his five hundred men and kill them all. That was until he saw their faces. These men were already defeated. They were all dead men still breathing. As the point of the wedge of five hundred men led by Terrance struck headlong into these thousands of men the elite soldiers of Strongsong made them so.

Here is the first of the battles in this book. I hope you guys enjoy it. There are I believe five battle chapters in this book.

War of the North and Trident

King of the Trident

Edmure Tully
(November 313)

They had been defeated. What had become known as the Age or War of the Three Fawns was at an end. It should not have been this way. They had the numbers at first. All was going well until the Westlands joined with the Iron Throne. If Lord Badics had not wed his sister Jonella to Jon Lannister then the man would never had taken sides.

When the Vale’s forces landed on Pyke they would have been slaughtered by Lord Harbert’s men. He had given everybody the impression that he was living in Summerhall, but he was in fact lying in wait on Pyke. The Vale’s men were greatly outnumbered until the Lions arrived. With those ten thousand men the tables turned and Harbert was on the defensive. In the end the first Fawn fell to the blade of Gwayne Badics. He still could not believe that the same fool who lived for a month in one of his whore houses in the last war had cut him down.

Everything could have still been salvaged if he had not been caught off guard like he was. They were marching to take control of the Twins. With them in his control then the Iron Throne could not cross to put down Maric Baratheon. He was supposed to be his shield and instead he fell victim to Terrance Badics’ ambush. His men were cut down and he was forced to flee back here to Riverrun. The entire rest of the war he was forced to sit in his keep as the ravens came in for aid.

With the Twins open to him Orys marched his men into the North. Within a single battle Maric was put down and captured. He would be forced to return to King’s Landing where his head would be next to his older brothers. In just two years the brothers Harbert and Maric had fallen. The men he would follow were gone now. There was nothing he could do. All that was left was to avenge these men. He would see Orys Baratheon fall and more importantly the Badics family would fall as well. They would all kneel before the King of the Trident.
