Hello, welcome to my first ever After Action Report! (First ever post on this forum as well.) I think I will form this in a historybook fashon, and I will try to explain any gameplay nuances in a rational way. Any suggestions and/or comments are more than welcome. First of all, this is based largely on G.K.'s "Monarchy over the Danube", but after a bit of noodling around in the forum, I discovered that Hungarian AARs are a commonplace. So much for originality. I would like to thank Krazy19Karl and JTess for making the outstanding "Magrathea - The Map Rebuilt" mod, which adds a lot of historical and geographical accuracy as well as the ability to puppet just about any country you can think of. It's important to know that I changed te start date to 1934.6.6 to give myself some time to build an army before major events come into play. Also note that will be playing as the country of Austria-Hungary, to make defining borders simpler, so don't be surprised if that name shows up in some screenshots. I did some tweaking in the game files to put A-H as the controller and owner of all starting Hungarian provinces, and I also slightly beefed up the resources, leadership and manpower in my territory. Oh, I'm using HOI version 1.4.
With no further ado, let's start with some
True Historical Background
On the 23rd of March, year 1919, the Hungarian Communist Party, led by ex-POWs from the eastern front of World War One, overthrew the weak Democratic Republic of Hungary. In attempt to secure his position in the hearts of the Hungarian population, the country’s new leader, Bela Kun, promised to forcefully bring the borders of Hungary back to what they were in before the peace conference in Paris, without conscripting soldiers.
Bela addressing some of his followers
He maintained his militaristic attitude even after the Entente (Allies) offered to mediate a discussion over how the land should be split between Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Romania, and demanded that Romanian troops withdraw from Transylvania. Not complying with Bela’s demands, Romania sent even more troops past the Carpathian Mountains, and threatened to invade Hungary if they didn’t cooperate. The Hungarian army then prepared to preemptively attack the Romanian line.
New Hungarian territory in light green. Lost territory in dark green. Isolated areas of Hungarian ethnic majority in orange.
Deviation from History
Fearing for his country’s security, one of Kun’s political cronies, Tibor Szamuely, convinced him to recognize the proposed borders of Romania and Czechoslovakia, at least until the Entente withdrew its military support from Serbia. A quote from their conversation is as follows,
Kun: I see your point, but I do not believe it would be wise for me to change orders I just gave. I shall scrap the plans for an invasion of Romania, but I will not move my troops.
Szamuely: Good, like I said before, your current actions almost perfectly parallel Napoleon’s.
Kun: Getting a private island would be nice though…
The Pre-War Years
For the next decade, Hungary’s economy slowed, although becoming a beacon for communist revolutions throughout the word. It looked as if the days of the Communist Republic were numbered, until the great depression hit. Due to their extreme isolation, Hungary’s relative economic standing among other European powers greatly rose, and Bela’s policies were praised. Much to his dismay, however, by the mid-30s, the only other communist nations were the USSR and her puppets. The Communist Party of Hungary had never completely supported Lenin’s policies and ideals, but once Stalin came to power, Hungary ceased all diplomatic relations with Russia, Jenő Landler (a member of the cabinet) calling Stalin the “Hot headed, shadowy resurrection of the Tsars”. There was a similar occurrence when the Nazi party took control in Germany. By 1934, it seemed as if Hungary's only friend was Spain, but Spain was by no means a powerful ally. This lack of partners may soon change though...
The Brief Austrian Uprising
In the early months of 1934, the Social Democrats and the Communist Party from Austria attempted to overthrow the fascist government led by Engelbert Dollfuss. They desired to form a union with Hungary and restore their pre-war borders together. After weeks of fighting, the rebels (who were quietly supported by Hungary) succeeded in killing Dollfuss. However, shortly after, Kurt Schuschnigg was proclaimed leader of Austria. After another month of insurgency, the police and military were completely in control once again. The leader of the movement, ex-mayor of Vienna, Jakob Reumann fled to Hungary, and plans were laid for a Hungarian liberation of Austria.
