I've made a little mod which replaces the current axe used by Roman heavy and light infantry models with a sword.

I've switched both of them with the Norse sword as it reminded me of the gladius - it could be regarded as a bit of a stretch but "De gustibus..." et cetera, right? ;)

Installation:

The mod is updated for the latest CK2 patch (2.6.2).

Simply download, extract and copy the content of this .rar file into your ...\My Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\mod\ directory and check it in the launcher before you start the game.

Byzantine gladius mod

It doesn't alter the checksum (i.e. should be ironman-friendly); also, a big thanks to ahhheygao for kindly explaining me how to make such a mod.

---> Please note that you'll both need the Byzantine Unit Pack and the Norse Unit Pack DLCs for this mod to work.

Enjoy!

Should you prefer to see the standard (i.e. vanilla) Byzantine sword for the heavy and/or light infantry again, just change (in my mod!) the lines below:

Code:
EMFXActorType = {
        name = "byzantinegfx_LIGHT_INFANTRY_weapon"
        actorfile = "gfx\models\Attachments\Norse_sword.xac"
        scale = 1.0f
    }
and/or
Code:
    EMFXActorType = {
        name = "byzantinegfx_HEAVY_INFANTRY_weapon"
        actorfile = "gfx\models\Attachments\Norse_sword.xac"

        scale = 1.0f
    }
to:
Code:
actorfile = "gfx\models\Attachments\byzantine_sword.xac"

save and exit, launch, and enjoy!

Could your mod be used in another mod? I'm currently creating some Roman things in mod and I believe that small tweak if yours would be perfect.

Awesome.

Thank you so much. My main gripe with the 'Byzantines' has been conquered! HUZZAH!

Great thanks for making this.

Strangely, this mod is no longer working. Not sure why.

Hmm, yeah - strange.

In fact, it seems like the mod might still have worked but the game was oddly using (almost?) exclusively light infantry models instead of heavy ones - hence the "problem".

Be that as it may, I've updated it for the latest patch (2.4.4) and now it's working as intended once again. Download it from the link in the opening post. Enjoy!

Not to nitpick, but it would be more accurate to call it a 'Spatha' as opposed to a Gladius. The Gladius was phased at, and replaced almost entirely by the Spatha before the WRE fall, never minding the CK2 time period.

Otherwise, nice tweak! :)
