I have the situation where using any portal causes the game to crash without any notification.

System:
Intel i7
8 GB RAM
AMD ATI Radeon 6950 with most recent drivers
LXLE 14.04.1
 
Are you using the Linux/Mac beta version? It seems to fix some problems, though many problems seem to remain. Currently the game does not work well, if at all, on Linux and the devs are working on a fix, which seems like it's taking a lot longer than expected.
