I just started my first game of Victoria II, and this happened.

Notice that little article about how Lincoln got assassinated, not three months into the Civil War. Um...here's hoping that gives me an edge?

well, we now have a radical republican in office, so expect divisive policies alienating the slaveholding north

Lincoln's revocation of habeas corpus wasn't divisive enough to cause the North any real problems; I doubt there is anything Hannibal Hamlin could do that would be much worse. Or that he wouldn't exploit the assassination of Lincoln to unite the nation against the South and slavery.

I had one newspaper heading almost a year-and-half in the civil war, where Lincoln didn't get assassinated but instead threw off the assassin from the booth.

I spend the next few minutes staring and chuckling at the newspaper. :p

That was my big selling point for why the newspaper was my favorite feature, when I was explaining the game to my friend.

It's not as weird as one thing that happened in a game where I was playing as a Republic of Spain. I got the "Lincoln Assassinated!" and "Lincoln Fine" articles in the same newspaper.

Not only that, the newspapers also contains inside jokes.

For example there is one about a notice being published that pink is now national colour of Japan and calling Japan 'pink' will be viewed as an insult. The real deal is that they recoloured Japan pink (from previous red) to distinguish it from Britain in the last patches, and any pink coloured nation creates a lot of hilarity on the forums. :p

Lincoln didn't expect Booth to come back upstairs and try again.
