Chapter 11: Drifting on the Breeze
Once safely in 6th place, and with over 100 Prestige, I decide to finally enact National Conference, giving me free research points, which are like the best thing ever (without actually being the best thing ever).
With an adult male population of 4.17 Million, I am roughly on par with the US of A in sheer numbers. They do outnumber me in craftsmen and soldiers, however, and significantly at that. What is important about this, though, is that I
am making ground on them, and if the trend continues, I should be able to actively beat them in any head-to-head wars.
As we can see, they do have me substantially on industrial score, and their military is technically stronger. Optimistically speaking, their sphere is utter crap, and I'd take my one sphereling and satellite, the CSA and California, over all of their friends any day. Denmark also briefly made it into Great Power status, although based on their score of 187 (40 lower than Russia) they're either right on the brink or already slipping out of GP rank.
We're building a fleet. The first person to guess why gets a shout-out in the next update (and possibly a cookie). Now, to be frank, my navy sucks. It's horrible, partly because I have 2 naval techs (I think Egypt starts with more), and I'm not taking the time to build Man o' Wars. Luckily, most nations don't have strong fleets in the Western Hemisphere (except America, of course).
The fleet (mostly consisting of transports, will assemble on the Eastern Coast at San Pedro de Sul.
Ok, let's look at immigration again. By now, the overall rate has gone down, but if we look at the US we'll see that...
We now hold the advantage over them. The more immigrants we get, the better it'll be. Once we have a population advantage, I am confident that I can keep or expand it, but we most definitely need to get to that point first.
Empiricism finishes, giving a roughly 6 additional research points a day. I consider going for the next culture tech in line, but eventually dismiss it in favor of...
Getting up to two naval techs is important, because it means doubling our technical knowledge of the navy. Also, these techs will fly by, especially with Empiricism finished.
Why would you look at that. It appears that the number of immigrants has increased substantially. Let's hope that this is more than our Northern "friends".
Looks like Mr.
Bald Eagle isn't feeling the love as much as we are.
We shall soon surpass even these pathetic excuses for Americans (let's face it, there's only one dominant power in the New World).
And the Bears continue to rake in a smaller, but still respectable, chunk of the travelers.
I start fully influencing Brazil (apparently they offered an alliance before i could even make them Cordial. They seem like decent folk. With Brazil under my thumb, a whole host of tropical resources, as well as the most powerful military in South America, will be allied to moi.
While peace was all nice and good, it's time to take (arguably) the best province in SA off of the Colombians. Antioquia is really quite good, on par with some of the best American states at the start of the game.
Also important to note that Colombia is in the American Sphere, bt I'm really not afraid of those Yankees anymore. The CSA will act as a meatshield, that will give me ample time and space to win any war of attrition. The only real concern is the US somehow gaining a significant military tech advantage, which I should be able to monitor.
One of the more important discoveries out there. One more step up the stairs to more or less free colonization abilities.
I decide to work on sphereing the Ottomans. Chances are that I won't have them for a while, and they're in a pretty nasty war (more on that later), but they are still fairly large (perhaps the largest nation that isn't a great power, China excluded), and so should provide me plenty of resources, if I can get them under my control. The Ottomans also have one of the better militaries in the world, despite their diminutive ranking.
Why influence them now? Because an event fired (possibly on a rebel victory, one of the reasons for no prestige) that cleared or destroyed almost all relations between them and major powers. Another event fired that allowed me to gain some influence, which means that almost immediately I can put myself at cordial.
Conditions for the Panama Canal decision. Turns out that clipper transports doesn't actually help me reach the technology prerequisites, but it won't hurt anyway. Meanwhile, I carefully plan out my next technologies. The Canal helps with naval movement a LOT (naturally), so I'm planning on getting it soon-ish.
My next technology, the Practical Steam Engine, will help me in a variety of ways. For the Navy, it will help unlike ships, it also has population increase discoveries, it improves my RGOs (despite industrialization, they still provide much of my income), it'll put me closer to Panama Canal techs, and it'll... well, that's it, really. Still, a very useful tech, and one that I have no compunctions about grabbing.
I re-balance my budget, and decide to take a screenshot of the new situation. Negative tariffs, check. Fully funding everything, check. Cutting taxes for rich and (barely) the middle class, check. Looks pretty good to me. By the way, the amount of money that I make from gold is actually MUCH higher than what is shown on the screen.
And I'll end this mammoth update on a funny note. Apparently, the Pope wants social liberty for all, and a new proletariat for the working class. More on socialist Pope-man, and more, next time in...
