I recently bought a new laptop (Lenovo) and I was trying to use the F12 button to turn on the nofog cheat.

The thing is, it just adjusts the brightness to the monitor.

I don't know if I'm just being computer illiterate, but does anyone know a way around this?

I would look at the documentation for your laptop. You probably need to hold in a key along with F12. My main computer has a function key you need to hold while pressing F12 to get the prompt. Many machines assign multiple functions to a single key to save space on the keyboard.

Hope this helps

Try control-F12 and that should open up the console. I have an HP with Windows 8 and F12 simply sets it in Airplane mode. After playing around with different key combinations, control-F12 did it for me.
