So I watched the twitch stream of Charlemagne AND I WAS SHOCKED!

The two Paradox developers playing the game did not know where the Goths originated from, offering wild guesses of "Middle Italy" and the even more ridiculous "the steppes". Well, the Goths did eventually end up in Italy, but to put them as starting there is simply laughable. What's more: Scholars believe that the Goths came from Gotland and Vester/Ostergautland in Sweden, which is where Paradox is based. Goths were Germanic invaders from Sweden.

Where DID they come from? I read Slavs came from southeast asia originally, so germanics were somewhere close by I'm guessing?

Wow, really? I wish my internet was not so slow so I could have watched it.

That is honestly a disgrace if that is the truth. Are modern day Swedes actually not taught about all the Germanic tribes that originated from there? :(

When I learned history properly at school (in the UK) we started in 1066, so it's not all that surprising.

He's being sarcastic guys.

Its highly unlikely that they came from Sweden. Goths came from elsewhere, and its just some Swedish "historians" have tried to tie when to local places in Southern Sweden (Småland having some museum "proving" this fact and names several places as birthplace of Kings and names of villages coming from great Gothic leaders) as well as Östergötland and Västergötland (saying that the Ostrogoth was Eastgeats and Visigoths was Westgeats). It's bullshit really with pure guesses and nationalism. Don't believe everything you read on the internet. :)

Not really alas.

But to their defense, the devs who played yesterday focus on the gameplay part not the history like they admited themselves.

From where do they come from then ? Aren't all german from Scandinavia anyway ?

Most likely the other way around since humans emigrated to the north, not from the north.

AFAIK, even historians aren't sure (yet) where the Goths came from.

Honestly, why should that matter? The two are focused on gameplay mechanics and not research.

They cannot and don't need to know origin of every tribe which doesn't even exist in the original game's timeframe for which the mechanics were (and are) made.
The problem is that the starting date is being pushed so far into the pre-feudal era that the Goths became playable here.

ignoring the above mentioned dispute that even proffesional historians argue about the matter :)

I'd guess that they probably came from Africa originally, like all other humans.

Anyway. I read that the first wave of Goths picked up so many extras on the way that their ethnicity was so diverse and the term Goth ceased to be a meaningful way to describe ethnicity.

EVERYONE came from Africa (supposedly), the question is where did the specific tribe that split off and became Goths come from?

Well it seems the idea dates from the 6th century (although that source is basicly regarded as mythical history). The archaeology is apparently not terribly supportive, and the movement isn't terribly typical (Scandanavia to Crimea?).

The first reliable history puts them around the Black Sea then above the Danube (and then entering the Roman empire). So yes OP you are (contestably) correct

I was more shocked at the fact they didn't know who the Merovingians were and were going off that dan brown book about the Merovingian being jesus's descendents instead of you know the previous kings from which Charles and his family served before they became kings >.>

Well, a sad day for PI, a really sad day
Goths oviously came from Göteborg and were subjects to the swedish crown as can been seen in the title of the swedish monarch: Med Guds Nåde Sveriges, Götes och Vendes Konung
