Austrian Conquest of Böhmerwald and French Conquest of Corsica

This was the wars that the King didn’t ask, but the Wars that he got it.

The APA (Austria Portuguese Alliance) had an army 3x bigger comparing with the English alliance and the navy was 2x bigger.

Against the French alliance, the APA had 25.000 more men and they had 7.000 more cannons.
The Navy was 2,5x bigger.

England is no danger, but the French alliance has an army more or less equal, and already had conquered Corsica.

With war, the first thing that D. Sebastião I did, was raising the taxes because the country were losing 7,10 ducats.

Kongo, seeing Portugal in two wars, mark Portugal as a Rival.

Melilla was finally in Aragon’s hands again. Some noble believes that Melilla should be Portuguese and defy the King to take it.
Castile that was still at war with the Ottomans has 4 provinces in the rebels’ hands.

At least 3 French big armies (26, 29, 30 regiments) and 1 big Austrian (42 regiments).

Portugal asked Castile for military access that was accepted.
24 regiments would go to Navarra.

The Portuguese, who arrogantly took their navy to Danish waters, looking for conflict with the English, lost many of their ships.
The English even without a leader were much better.

A humiliating defeat for the Portuguese Navy that was worst by losing one ship in their return home.
After the arriving of Portuguese Army at Navarra, the King decided to support Hainautian Nationalist, to entertain the French with national revolts.

It seems as if serfs are moving out of the provinces and aim to earn a living in the Lisboa (Capital of Portugal). This is creating turmoil in the country, but Lisboa (Capital) may benefit in the long run. The King had to accepted, if not, morale of armies would decrease (-10%).
Of course stability of the country take a hit (-1 tax), but base taxes in Lisboa grow at the expense of the island of Azores (-1 tax).

Prestige and Papal influence grow (+25) after converting Kongo to Christianity.

At 21 of October, the Portuguese win their first battle against the French.
Well, it can’t be really be call a battle… 21.000 Portuguese against 2.000 French cannons… was more of a massacre.

Béan siege is over and Portugal took the province and split to other two provinces.
The objectives were to siege one province and to annihilate small military French armies, starting to help the Navarra army that were losing against Thuringia, saving them.
Seeing that 17.000 French troops were heading to Labourd, and the siege was almost in the end, Toulouse army raise their men and head Labourd to regroup.
24 Portuguese regiments fought 14 French.
King Henri III was leading their troops.
Although outnumbered, the French troops were better, imposing the first defeat on the Portuguese. This defeat made rethink the whole war.

Abroad, Castile Royal wedding were celebrate with Portugal.
A new Settlement in Little Karoo (near Cape) was endorsed by the King, gaining more taxes (+1) instead of prestige (+10). The prestige of the King was not high (+29), but still, he preferred to help the Kingdom. Soon after, a secret family, made the King lose prestige (-5).
30 ducats were spend to send 200 people to Benguela (Angola) and 50 Diplomatic power to save a colonial disaster that would took the life of 200 persons.
The Viceroy of Brazil, José Coutinho was reappointed by the King, making an excellent diplomat (3-6-3) but making some more desire of liberty (+5%).

Johann Leopold II de Avis lose is life in a battle. Maria Theresia I ascend to the throne and his elected as the new Empress.

Sadly, the Teutonic Order makes peace with England, but Austria makes white peace with Hungary, freeing his army to deal with the French.
Béan siege was taken by the French.

26-08-1548, the King is sick. To rule the country in conditions, more power goes to the Nobles raising production efficiency in 5%.

Portugal were trying to retreat the Portuguese soldiers that were in Navarra (conquer by French) to avoid fighting the French who were on their reach.
Big mistake, the English entrap the Portuguese navy, and the French the Portuguese Army.

With the terrain and river, the French won by a small margin.

After long years of war, Castile makes peace with the Ottomans, at the expensive of one of Algiers province in Castile and one of them to create the Kingdom of Granada.

Peace

Fortunately peace comes, but what a price.
Austria negotiates Navarra and another province to Bavaira.
My mistake, I let the leader negotiate for me, and I was playing in Iron mode. Damn
France announces that Portugal is his new rival.
Austria also makes peace with England (cost them 684 ducats).

Portugal abandons the idea of naval supremacy, making diplomatic costs -10% and Heavy and Light ships +10% for the next 10 years.
The King believes that is more important to reduce costs in the diplomacy and then, build ships.

The appointment to the council, of Colonial Governor Gonçalo de Sousa (+1), brings 10% more of Global tariffs to help bringing balance to the economy.
Portugal was losing 0,22 ducats and had 4 and people were finding lots of ways of getting around paying taxes and fees on moving goods. This was cutting into Portugal income, but stopping it would cost quite a lot in the short-term.
Stopping would bring a hit in stability (-1) and 103,31 ducats. Money that Portugal didn’t had.
Their for, it continue to lose trade efficiency (-10%) and national tax (-10%).
The Kind had to sack Filipe Vasconcelos (2), a man that was bringing more man to the National Manpower (+10%) but cost 8,5 ducats.
At least, Portugal improves in the Administrative technology (level 8).

The King decided to marriage a member of his family with a member of Granada’s family.
Is prestige was low (+6), but the people love him and he order the construction of Beira’s temple.

The economy, after 2 years, finally become on track.
The Kings decision to grant a concession to a merchant company has proven to be wise. Portugal earning has been greatly enhanced, and this money can be beneficial for other things.

Little Karoo become a town, and the construction of a fort there and Cape Town starts.
South Africa Company (SAC) was controlling 91% of the trade power there.

Inca’s War

After 21 year, the viceroy José Coutinho died.
D. Sebastião appointed Damião de Correia (4-1-1) to the job.
The King, believing that a second colony would be good to improve the competition decided to settle colonists in Banda Oriental and Rio de la Plata (both in Uruguay).

In the year of 1554, 12 Aka Patriots Regiments appear in Anziku (Angola) and in 181 days they take the fort.
D. Sebastião I decided not to take the same steps like his mother, accept local autonomy for them.

The battle of Puto, two year after the conflict started, resulted in a defeat for the Portuguese.

Even with such a huge difference, Uriel de Mendonça could save 1,700 of his men.
One and half year later, this time with 13.000 Portuguese’s against 14.000 Inca’s has won, letting 7.000 Inca’s death.

The King did not forget the naval battles that they lost against England.

Castile, recognizing that, proposes an alliance with Portugal, but the King prefers not to accept.
He prefers Aragon as is main ally.

The war was ruining the finances again, and when D. Sebastião I, in the long tradition of the Kingdom, decided to help 200 people to go to Rio de la Plata, costing 30 ducats, forces the country to borrow 121 ducats.
But in the 1st of June of 1558, Rio de la Plata and Banda Oriental become towns easing the expenses with the new future colony.
Nevertheless, the King order to start the colonization of Uruguay, the 3rd province.

The largest shipbuilding enterprise ever launched in the history of the kingdom began with D. Sebastião I.

The King decided to raise taxes to balance it.

Political crises occur with that, and the King in sake of stability, took a hit in is legitimacy of government (-25%).

Ceuta was almost Christian and missionaries were sent to Tangier, Safi and then Cayor.
Former Morocco coast would be Christian.
 
Kanara’s War

After 3 year of war with Tunisia (the help to Aragon was only in paper, no real confrontation happen), the King decided to take the Army and Navy and set foot in India.
Kanara was the target.
After disembarking 20.000 men, the ships, heavily damage by the voyage retreat to safe haven.

The stability of the Iberian Peninsula has always been something that the Kingdom has always managed to keep balanced. With the conquest of Tunisia by Aragon, stability could be into question.

Kanara falls after 1 year of siege.

Roggeveld becomes a town and is assigned to the SAC.
Xhosa (right of Little Karoo in South Africa) starts to be colonized.

5 of May of 1566 the King decided to start again a war against the Incas, the second.
His reign, for the time being has more war time (14 years and 8 months) than peace time (14 years and 3 months).
From the beginning this King wanted war, and he had it, and not simple ones, but against France and England.

In the summer, 3 battles are fought, 2 in Peru, another in India, all won.

The King is a little worried about the increasing power of Aragon in northern Africa, but believes they are not accustomed to maintain these lands and may balance again the power.

Kongo’s War

In November 1570, D. Sebastião I declares war to Kongo. This is the 3rd Portuguese War against Kongo.
2 wars were been engage, one against Inca, another against Kongo. This is the 7th wars in D. Sebastião reign. No other King fought so many wars.

Inca Patriots rise in Puno (6+6 Regiments).
To deal with that, after conquer 5 provinces in 4 years and 10 months, peace is offer to the Inca nation. They cede 2 provinces, 50% of Trade Power

In 9 months, losing 601 men against 6.204 enemies, peace is achieved and Kongo is Portuguese.

D. Sebastião I consideres Mamluks (in Egypt) and Vijayanagar (in India) as Rivals.

In Africa, Ndongo rebels start to spread their desire to get a free nation, increasing the risk of revolt. Colonist starts to colonize the west South Africa (Greater Namaqualand).

Lisbon Army of 13.000 men arrives at Angola.

With a little peace, the King starts the colonization or Tucujulandia (North of Brazil) and Arica (South of Peru).

Finally in 28 February of 1581 India revolt is put down.

Tensions between nobles and clergy.
In feudal kingdoms two castes within society held great power. The nobility and the clergy. Now it turns out a baron and the local monastery of his fief are bickering about who owns a rather large piece of land. These days the royal court is swamped with people yammering about divine right. The nobles claiming their divine right to rule the land and the clergy asserting their position as the representatives of God on Earth. The whole situation is growing rather unstable, the baron in question is inciting the other nobles against the clergy and questioning their right to hold any sort of temporal property. The prior of the monastery has brought in the archbishop on his side, who in turn threatens to go straight to Rome should you decide to side with the nobles.
The King decided to not face 8 regiments in the island of Azores and reply:
“Jesus lived among beggars and fishermen, why don't you?” (-100 Papal opinion).

To try to favour again in Pope Gregory XIII grace, the King introduced the Gregorian calendar.
This new calendar was implemented on the Thursday, 4 October 1582 (Julian calendar), being followed by Gregorian calendar, Friday, 15 October 1582.

In Brazil, Essequibo was conquered by Brazilian forces.

The second naval battle, in Mauretanian Coast, with 12 Portuguese Carracks and 22 Flytes facing 11 French Carracks and 20 Caravels ended in defeat to the Portuguese with the loss of 2 Carracks.

In the end of the first year of war, Portugal achieved the leadership in Military technology.

But that didn’t mean anything in the war.
France was finishing is conquer of Britanny, conquer 3 provinces in Spain, sieging another 3 and Savoy, was force to make peace with France.

In South America, the war was going well.
The Portuguese army conquer 3 provinces and were going to another two.

In Caracas 48 French vessel were in the harbour.
The “Armada Real” (Royal Navy) that was heading for there, detach is 22 Flytes (Transporters).
This is a major risk, because the French fleet is bigger than the Portuguese, but, hopping to surprise them leaving the harbour.

Even with war, another loan was paid (166 Ducats).
But the nobles, try to took advantage of that demanding recompensation, creating instability (-1) at even then, un expensive of 248,35 Ducats.
Damn them all.

At home, Portugal lost 2 provinces, Beira and Bragança.

In Southern Guiana, the Portuguese fleet find and sunk all 4 French Carracks.

In April, Coimbra falls in French hands, and Castille will face of losing the rest of the country, the Royal family prepares them self to leave Lisbon and embark to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

French Particularists rise in Barinas (Guiana) but face the Brazilian Army. Meantime the Portuguese forces siege Carracas that falls.
Without anything that can be done at home, the King support with money, the Castilian Rebels.

Lisbon falls, the Royal Family head to Rio de Janeiro.
The Armada Real, to prevent the French navy to go in search of the ships carrying the royal family, suffers a resounding defeat.

Playing for Portugal is not too difficult, since they can contain right-Spain, forgiveness, Castile.
Later, at least in this game, France becomes a problem.

Peace

King D. João III began his reign with a war and lost.
He lost nothing in concrete as D. Sebastião, who lost Navarra at the beginning of his reign.
But after a reign of 47 years, which grew 16 provinces and only losing one, there is some pressure.

Stability was on 2, and with no chances of getting higher.
Colonial Government Rogério Rebelo was wired, by the sum of 164,95 ducats, and with a monthly expense of 10,44 to bring more 10% in tariffs.
Caetano Eanes, a Philosopher, at the expense of 34,97 ducats and 2,61 monthly to bring more prestige to the King (+1).
Colonizers that were sent to Damaraland, South Africa were call back.

In South America, England made them self between Portugal and France.

Trade Ideas were improved to bring one more merchant to Reign.

On January 1592, the last loan of 166 ducats were paid.
A Drydock in Lisbon, a Temple in Tangier were order to be built.

Missionaries were sent to Kanara and Desk, two Indian provinces.

Santee, a province in North America, was colonize and abandoned.
No historical records why that had happen.

15 days later, Mosquito, a province in Central America start to be colonized.

1,50 ducats were given in a monthly base to Navarran Nationalists.

In two events, 50 diplomatic and 25 military power had to be spend to help the colonies.

With the English starting to colonize south America also, colonists were sent to Choco, the strait the connect South and Central America, to stop them to spread to much.

In Brazil, Viceroy Carlos Gomes weren’t reappointed, and instead a diplomatic was.
With the national manpower to low (1.089 man), Alexandro Coutinho, was recruited to bring 10% more.

5 new temples were built in Africa.

As the kingdom was in financial trouble (-11) the King decided to sell titles, bringing 133,81 ducats.

At 8 April of 1595 the Kind died.

D. António was not really ready. D. Sebastião rule for many years (47 to be precise), and D. João III only 10. There for D. António I was only been equal prepare in military as is ancestors (the two previews rulers).

After two years of war (December 1597 to December 1599), Portugal siege and conquer, Belize, Petén, Honduras, Pipi, Campeche and Guatemala, start the colonization of Pampas (Argentina) and built two forts in South America, one in Suriname and the other in Choco.

At December 1600, the colony of “Rio da Prata” was formed.

France, in the last war with England, conquers Cornwall. To help England and to try to damage France, 2,25 ducats were send in a monthly base to English Patriots.

Francisco Vasconcelos was only 4 years in “office”. Diogo Botelho, a Bureaucrat was sent from Portugal, to reduce their desire for freedom.

In November, Aragon King asks for Portugal help in the war against Castile.

It was hardly a fair fight. One Portuguese Caravel against ten from Castille and then with a military defeat in Cadiz, (15.000 Portuguese against 20.000 Castilians).

With that, one fort started to be built in Cayenne, and colonist sent to Mosquito (Central America).

In Central America, a naval battle is won, and one battle was lost to Castille (that then lost against rebels), and then five battles against rebels in Jamaica and Mexico were won.

Almost 60.000 against 38.000, left 25.000 men perish in that field (12.551 man from AP, and 12.399 from ABC).

After almost 8 years, 11 provinces added to Portugal (the 2nd most so far) and letting 7 new temples and 13 new forts, the King past away.
