Diplomatic Technology is advance in is Reign.

The Holy Father asked that the Inquisition starts in Portugal. The King lost some influence, but denied.
The King didn’t want to lose the technological leverage.
063_Inquisition.png

In 1500 he found the Casa da India (India House)
064_Trade.png

On 2nd March 1501, Afonso VI conceding that it was no longer possible to govern at distance, formalizes the colony of Brazil.
066_Brazil.png

Regardless of the colony have been formalized, Itamara is colonized by the motherland.

In that year, Castile that had recovers Toledo but lost Madrid.
They have conquered land in Algiers, but to lose the Capital…
D. Afonso was right in staying out of the War, but to see an “allied” loose is capital to a Muslim country…
067_Castile_Algiers.png

The King gathered the council and sent for Gabriel Andrade, that was in Rio de Oro with the Guarda Real (Royal Guard) to discuss the help on a Cristian country.
Gabriel Andrade taking notice of it, ask the King if the all troops should go to the border of Algiers or let some to protect the Castilian colony of Arguim south of Rio de Oro.
After recalled, he cancels the council and decided to move Sierra Leone, killing 7.000 natives x3 times losing 867 soldiers and moving to Gold Coast killing 11.000 natives along the way.
Free from the native dangers, Sierra Leone starts to be colonized.
068_Sierra_Leone.png

The King, did well, because one year after, Castile, even though they lost Leon, they 5 Algiers provinces.
069_Castile_Algiers.png

São Tomé is elevated to Town and is direct control is delivered to the Brazil Colony.

2 and half years later, the change to raise taxes arrived, but the Kind decided not to apply any.
The colony should grow first.

Ah, if only you could "protect" the Castillian people for a good long while.

Ah, if only you could "protect" the Castillian people for a good long while.
I wasn't expect that by this time Castile would be in trouble but at least while they are entertained, they don't mess with me.
I thought I'd help them, but then I saw that they were doing fine in Africa ...

Is that Algiers occupying some of those Castilian provinces?! Although, it looks like Castile should wrap up the conquest of Granada by warscore this time around.

The Iberian Union Wedding didn't fire did it? Otherwise, it might be interesting to see PU Castile and Aragon, or even Spain down the road, come into conflict with you...

No, no, no, no, no, no, and no.
Long live Queen Isabela and King Fernand....

Let' them be apart, i'll do everything to keep them apart.

Colonization

Gabriel Andrade continues is killing in Africa; wipe out 6.000 natives in Ivory Coast.

Portugal was losing money, and the best way to deal with that in the King’s mind was with a War.
In November 1503, Afonso VI claims Cayor, and in April next year, he declares war on Mali without the support of Aragon.

3 Mali Barques were sunk.

Portugal were losing -7,72 ducats witch month.
One loan of 64 ducats was taken and war taxes were raised but still, the income was not enough, losing -3,90 ducats.

In Gabu, the first battle is won. 11.000 Mali Soldiers are killed.

Stability is affected wend the King support a Philosopher.
The King, Cristian, it was a big defender of innovation.
071_Support_Philosopher.png

After 10 years and 6 months Castile finaly makes peace with Algiers, taking Granada, Tlemcen and Oran.
Portuguese nobles believe that Granada should be theres.
The King, dismiss them. He would not rise is hand against a Cristian Kingdom.
072_End_Castile_War.png

With the stability of the Kingdom just above average (+1), Garcia da Gama, a man that could help bring stability (-10% costs) was employed.

9 battles later and 1.193 Portuguese soldiers lost against 36.000 of Mali troops, 3 sieges were completed. Cayor (03-01-1505), Gabu (18-08-1505) and Futa Jallon (20-03-1506).
All was going well, but Fraticelli Heretics from Castile, after taking 2 provinces there, arrive at the Portugal province of Beira.
073_Fraticelli_Heretics.png

Wolof (29-05-1506) and Bure (04-07-1506) fell into Portuguese hands and Gold Coast becomes a Town, with the immediately construction of a fort.

Portugal trade power in Ivory Coast were about 26% and the Monopoly company, that was formed, paid 362,83 ducats for this monopoly.
That was a blessing, since Portugal had only 53 ducats; were losing money and had a debt.

Dinis Machado, took 10.000 men and returns to Portugal to face the Fraticelli Heretics in Beira.
074_Fight_Fraticelli_Heretics.png

The Fraticelli aren’t the Mali warriors. Well defending Beira, behind the river.
Dinis lost around 5.000 men and the Rebels only 2.000.
Hard day to Portugal, in Mali, Bure was lost.

In November, Wasuju (27-11-1506) were conquered and the news of the death of King Alfonso XII of Castile arrived.
With the fall of Bambuk (08-12-1506) and with Gabriel Andrade, that stayed in charge of the Mali war, winning battles, not as bloodily as Dinis, the time to end war had arrived.
With 7 provinces conquer, and with home problems, the King decided to put an end the War.
The King demand all their money (42 ducats), that would never paid the war expenses.
The coast line, Cayor and Gabu were annexed. 1 province was Songhai and Jolof become a sovereign state.

Military and Diplomatic Technology were advance
Administrative 7
Diplomatic 7
Military 9
076_Tecnologie.png

Portugal is the most modern in Military Technologies.

Rio Grande and Ceara, in the north of Brazil, started to be colonizing by the motherland.

The Fraticelli Heretics in Beira won the siege (306 days)
077_Fraticelli_Heretics_Won.png

8 days after the fall of Beira, and still without the full army at home, Agaron asked Portugal to help them in the Aragonese Conquest of Andalucia against Castile (allied to Austria)
078_Aragonese_Conquest_Andalucia.png

The decision was not lightly.
Castile was allied in three wars, two started by Portugal, another by them, that Portugal abandoned 13 years after (the war took 31 years).
Besides this, Castile trusts Portugal.
On the other hand, the Portuguese nobles want war with Castile and Aragon was the latest active ally (war against Morocco).
As far as D. Afonso VI knew, Aragon had 18.000 soldiers and 17 vessels. Castile had only 3.000 man (as far as he knew) and 15 vessels.
Castile is a powerhouse in the rough (rough diamond). Or Portugal let them “breathe, grow” and stay with them… or support Aragon to keep the Iberia Peninsula balance.
076_Tecnologie.png

Carpe Diem

Castile War

War it is.
The army, who had just come out of Mali war, and still had the Rebels to deal, were ready, but the navy…
079_Naval_Battle.png

Even so, Castile lost five Barques, and Portugal one.

The King that was ill even before the war, died one month after the war started, at the age of 57, the King dies in his sleep.
Some say that he was murder. At least it was suspicious, since there where much division between those who wanted war with Castile and those who think that Portugal should stay out of the war between allies.
Some even say that the King didn’t decide to go to War, but a small “coupe” happen and war was declare without is knowledge.

Some of those nobles, who disagreed with the course of events, support D. Rafael Ferreira Martins that rally 5 regiments in Madeira with the intention claiming the throne.
Regency was assumed by Afonso’s brother until D. João completed the right age to rule (he was 14 at the time).
080_Pretenders.png

Not all was “against” the Kingdom of Portugal.
The troops that depart from Mali with Lisbon as destination, carrying 9.000 troops were intercepted by Portuguese vessel with orders to disembark in Madeira and settle the pretender matters.
In the motherland, Dinis Machado that had come early with some troops attacked 2.000 Castile troops in Salamanca.
081_Salamanca_Battle.png

Nearly 900 men lost their lives on both sides.

Taking advantage of the crisis, Fezian nationalists rise in Ceuta. 12 Regiments.
The timing could not be worse.
082_Fezian_Rebels.png

1.000 Castile troops died in Badajoz and the Pretenders in Madeira are killed.
In Gibraltar, roughly 8.000 Portuguese fought against 3.500 Castilians and were reinforced by 4 regiments, but even so, they lost.
There, the troops join in Tangiers the ones who arrived from Madeira and with a total of 16 regiments headed for Ceuta to deal with the Fezians rebels.
083_Fezian_Rebels_Battle.png

The fight was hard and until the end no one knew who could win.
5.000 men died from each side (more or less) but the Portuguese won.

Jolof, the country that Portugal release from Mali, seeing the troubling events offers an alliance that is accepted.

Itamara Town was formed.
2 Castile Barques were sunk in the Straits of Gibraltar. 4 Heavy ships and 4 transports tried to help them, but the join force of 16 Portuguese vessels and 8 from Aragon, sunk them all.
084_Naval_Battle.png

2 Infantries Reg. and 1 Cavalry Reg. were recruit to.
Aragon was sieging Navarra in the North, Murcia and Granada in the South.
Castile was sieging the province of Leon, own by the rebels and Portugal was sieging the province of Beira won by the same rebels.

The Armada Real (Royal Fleet) was sent to Brazil to get the 8.000 men.

Colonization starts in Fernando Po, the island in Africa curve.

085_Aragonese_Conquest_Andalucia.png

The forces are balanced, except naval. It is noticed in the blockades.

War taxes were once again raised.

Time to really put the squeeze on Castille

D. João II

D. João II finally was old enough to take the Kingdom in his hands.
Since D. Pedro, Kings have gone more military than administrative, but D. João, had the military skills of their precedents and administrative skills never seen before.
086_Joao_II.png

The Colonial Governor José Vasconcelos (+1) was invited to the court bringing 10% more to the tariffs.

In the World, the French war for Armor, France occupies Brittany and the Kent, the province south of England.
087_Wars.png

England was losing, but even so, D. João II marries princess Anna of England.
The Kings prestige was never so high in the World (+99).

Like his father fathers, 30 ducats were spend to send 200 persons to Rio Grande in Brazil. Gold was found there. It would be good to the Colony.

In the war, the siege in Beira is won.
Granada is hold by Aragon and sieging Cadiz, Madrid and Navarra.
Valência and Aragon provinces are being siege by Castile.
Portugal took 232 days to take the siege of Galicia. Andalucia was still being siege.

Pedro Coelho continues to be the Viceroy. He was in perfectly harmony with the King and the king not only reappointed, but support him with measures to increase settlers.
088_Viceroy.png
089_Settlers_Increase.png

In Cayor 10 Senegambian Patriots Regiments appear.
Portuguese allied Jolof, 2 rebel regiments were there.
To deal with this problem, Portuguese troops were deployed in Tangiers and were to travel to Cayor, crossing Castile colonies.
090_Cayor_Rebels.png

5 months later, Senegambian Patriots revolt again in Cayor.
Again they are killed.

The loan of 64 ducats was paid.

Morroco Portuguese Vassal capture Tlemcen in Africa.
After the fall of Madrid (25-06-1509) to the Portuguese troops, Castile made peace with Venice.
Andalucia falls (01-07-1509) and at 18th August 1509 the King of Austria, Karl II Joseph leads 16 Regiments against the combine force of 30 Portuguese and Aragon regiments in Leon.
091_Leon_Battle.png

It was a tough battle leaving 12.000 from the Portuguese and Aragon side, and around the same from the enemy.

Later, Karl II Joseph tried to face the only the Portugueses, but didn’t take his full army (lefting 12 regiments in Leon. With a river to cross, they lost again.
092_Austrians_Battle.png

Less than 1 month, the Austrians, this time lead by a General, strike Cadiz again, this time, proper lead, and with 1,5x the Portuguese forces.
7.268 Portuguese troops were landing from the ships that were blocking Cadiz in a race against the Australian forces that were coming from Granada.
Dinis Machado could hold enough time to the troops disembark securely, losing against the Austrian General.
With the arrival of Karl II he took is victory, and what a victory, slaughtering all them.
It was a humiliating defeat.
093_3rd_Austrians_Battle.png

Fezian Nationalists appear in Tlemcen and conquer the province.

Some Scholars discovered that the Avis dynasty is back to Julius Caesar himself.
That was good to gain some prestige (+5) after the loss of battles.

Diplomacy technology is improved to help the navy and colonization.
094_Diplomacy.png

When Castile offers peace to Portugal, the King, that had his army shattered and the Austrians taking siege of Andalucia do not hesitated.
It was time to get out of the War.
Castile offered Galicia and to pay20 ducats. They would still have to fight Aragon, and rebels in Africa.
Aragon may not like it, but it was like it learn in chess with Pedro Damiano. He would sacrifice is ally Aragon in a war with the powerful Austria, wearing them down, and still getting some.
095_Peace.png

Need to prepare for the rematch.

Peace with Castile

Never the less, Aragon was not to upset, they still had Granada, Navarra, Argin (Africa) and Trarza (Africa).
096_Aragon.png

After peace, and after all African Mali provinces were core, it was time to do the same to Galicia.
To improve the capability of train men, 3 armoires were constructing in Lisboa, Porto and Coimbra.
The vaults were empty, in “a minute”, from 257 to 3 ducats.

D. João II made Jolof and Hausa Protectorates giving 3.1 and 8.3 of trade power.

30 ducats were spend to send 200 people more to Rio Grande in Brazil making that province a Town.

Fezian Nationalists, that Castile didn’t manage, conquer Fez (Morroco vassal) and cross it to Tangiers were the Portuguese troops had retreat to be safe of the Austrians.
Unprepared, they lost.
097_Fezian_Nationalists_Rebels.png

In December of 1512, the Aragon war with Castile Stop. They enter another, against Milan, Hungary and Naples for Milanese Reconquers of Brecia.
Castile, after the war, desire Gibraltar and Galicia (of course), but beside all that, they trust Portugal, to uphold is bargains
098_Castile.png

Senegambian Patriots rise in Cayor… again.
Because of this, the Kind decided to harsh the treatment on Cayor and Gabu, ex-Mali provinces, spending 50 military points to decrease the risk of revolts (-10).
Senegambian Patriots last 8 months. 8.000 Portuguese agains 10.000 Senegaleses, with their deaths being 4 times more.

7 month later, the Fezians Nationalist got what they asked for, to die in Portuguese hand.
1 year and 6 months later, 2.000 cross from Fez (Morocco vassal) to Tangier. They were kill and Portuguese decide to go after the others in Morocco with their help, killing them all.

In April 1513, 2.000 Fezian Portuguese Nationalists revolt in to province of Tlemcen (Castile North Africa).

Minas Gerais started to be colonized. Hope of gold is the main motivation.

After Fernand II of Aragon, D. João II married is Sister Maria with the Heir, but after the wedding, Aragon asked for 15% of Portugal trade power and later asked again for 25%.
Of course, D. João II declined both requests.
Almost immediately, the King orders the construction of 4 Armorys.
The main problem is the lack of the kingdom of manpower. To solve this, the only solution was to encourage man in the military service with good conditions.

After numerous attempts to colonize Sierra Leone the King felt that now was the perfect time to try again.
Fernando Po turns in to Town and the province in Morocco held by the rebels were finally release by the Portuguese after 301 days.
Whydah, next to Gold Coast starts to be colonized.
With that, global settler increase (+25) and settler changes up around 5%.

The relations with Castile fall, mainly because with the colonization Castile wants more provinces in Africa. Never the less they continue to trust Portugal.
099_Castile_Drops.png

Believing that the 2 provinces in North Africa in the hands of the rebels were support by Algiers, Castile declares Holy War against them.

With these games of chess, the diplomatic relations were improved.
100_Diplomatic_Relations.png

The Algiers and Ottomans (that must be defending them) ask for military access. The King, independently what the King of Castile thing of him, will not accept to facilitate the life of Muslim Kingdom.
He rejects.

1% in sugar taxes were raised in Brazil to support the colonization there by the motherland.

Maghrebi Patriots rise in Safi.
The manpower of the Kingdom was 636 men.
This time D. João hired 5.000 mercenaries to deal with the rebels.
Maghrebi receive harsh treatment in Safi (at the expensive of 20 Military Power).

Just in case, with all this revolts, the King harsh the treatment in Galicia also (40 Military Power).

February 1517 Cape Verde, starts to build un armory and training fields in Lisboa.

Nice war against Castile. And with Aragon sitting decently well on the eastern shore as well, it looks like Spain won't be forming anytime soon? Although it seems like you might be having some rebel problems in Africa...those provinces are not very profitable anyway...

Yet, I sense another large war with Castile brewing. Just look at all the provinces of yours they desire!

I also feel another war is imminent.

Yeap, with Aragon strong, Spain is not form.

I also feel another war is imminent.

War? does it stinks so strong?
