Hello, and welcome to the Family. This is my first forum game and I am fair excited. Any and all similarities to XVG's or RNN's games is because I blatantly rip them off, thank you to them for creating an entire genre for use by the community.

Welcome, to America and welcome to New York! The year is 1898 and the world is open to opportunity. You may have recently traveled here, or may be an old blooded settler, but it is no matter. New York City was just officially formed and it is open to exploitation. The American Dream is here for the taking, you just have to take it.

Joining the Game

The game can be joined at any time.

You must be a Politician, Businessman, Criminal or Policeman

To join, simply make a post in the following format:

Name:

Birth Year:

Culture: (English, Irish, German, Dutch, Italian, etc...)

Field: (Must be politician, businessman, criminal or policeman)

Biography: (Short background story for your character

Family: (An already created family or one you created yourself)

Stats

In The Family, the Characters have an amount Stats: Income, Wealth, Weapons, Underlings and Influence. Wealth is measured in American Dollars, and represents a character's material's worth. Income is measured in dollars per year, and represents the income a character has, whatever the means it is achieved. Influence is measured in clout, and is representative of the sway, friends, fear and favors a character accumulates and inspires over time. Weapons are the weapons they own, while underlings are men that they control at least fairly directly.

So how are they useful? Well, each turn your income generates more wealth from you. And then wealth can be used on different orders, like buying more land, businesses, politicians etc. Influence is gained by having position, winning battles, courting favor among, and so on, and will make your orders, actions, and plots generally go smoother.

Orders

Orders cost wealth to carry out, and plots use influence to increase their chance of success. If you are low on wealth, you can spend Influence on orders, but not vice-versa. If you plan to do this, note it in your orders.

Every character gets one personal order per turn. This can be anything, though you may want to make it useful. For instance, if you are short on wealth, getting favor from an official would be smart so no one looks your way. If you are looking to carry out a plot, visiting various families and currying their favor would be a good idea. This should be limited to a single action, and should take up no more than four lines in the message box.

In addition to their personal order, all players get an an administrative order. This is used to carry out their duties for the Family, such as handling administration, or smuggling alcohol, etc. The Family Head have one of these, and he is to use it for administering the Family (i.e. if he wants to expand boroughs, build specific buildings, etc.) The administrative order can have multiple actions in it so long as they are related, and should take up no more than six lines in the message box.

Note that the personal order is for actions that help your character, and the administrative order is for doing the duties that a character is tasked with doing by the Realm or other organizations.

You can use an administrative order to help yourself, but you must make it reasonable.

Finally, the Family Head get an additional Family order on top of their administrative and personal orders. This is used to do Realm actions such as granting titles, promoting (or demoting) characters, etc. The Realm order can have as many appropriate actions as the Family Head wishes in it, and it will have no limit for length.

Note that IC regarding policy changes within government, the police or addressing minis (such as the NYT) will be taken as an order.

Orders should have a subject of “The Family - Your Character’s Name, Current Year”. So, for example:

To: Dadarian

Subject: The Family - Rizzo Martini, 1910

Message text:

Personal Order:

Lots of fun stuff.

Administrative Order:

Even more fun stuff.

Realm Order:

The most fun stuff.

War Order:

Lots of fun war stuff (only to be used when attacking/raiding/etc. For recruitment/training, use other orders)

Plots

Plots are group covert efforts, for example assassinations. These will be treated as a special kind of order. Players are free to secretly plot, gather influence, etc. without GM approval. When the plot leader feels he is prepared to act, he must send the GM a PM detailing the plot goal, its plan, and those who back it. Any requests for NPC support (such as the business leaders, foreign interests, etc.) can be directed to me. Once I confirm the people that back the plot, it will be considered an order. A plot serves as the player’s personal order for the turn he decides to launch it, as well as for all those backing the plot. The greater the combined influence a plot has, the more likely it is to succeed.

Note that any assassination of a higher ranking Family member, or the Head himself, will need a VERY powerful plot backing to succeed.

The Family

One of the primary parts of The Family is just that, the Family. Beginning in 1898, life is short and your family is all you have. Be it made up of various PCs or just one, every criminal, policeman, businessman and politician in New York belongs to a family. Each player that advances the Family gives the Head more power and money in which to make executive decisions for the Family.

The Family Head starts out simple at the beginning of the game, it is the eldest member of the family. However as contenders for power rise, anyone may attempt to overthrow the Head via a plot. When a Family Head dies, the Family must get together and elect a new Family Head, in which to be in ultimate control of everything the Family does.

Updates, Events, and War

There are two types of updates. These will contain the results of orders, events, and other important happenings. The first type of update is a Main Update. It will cover a year in-game, and will contain the results of all the orders sent in, among other events that happen that year. The second type of update is a Mini Update. It will highlight or cover a specific event during the year.

Events are significant happenings (such as a war, political changes, a natural disaster, or an unexpected benefit) that will usually cause a headache for the Families, though sometimes will bring them or other characters joy. The majority of The Family will be player-driven, but the events will provide the substance for you as a player to create this content.

War is unique, as it can happen between police and criminals, or between rival families. When this occurs, the main commander of the various sides send me a general plan, which PCs are in the battle and the composition of their forces. Each PC involved is required to be in charge of at least one squad.

I will write up mini updates for major battles, and perhaps if you are a soldier or an officer commanding a squad, you will be noted in such a mini for commendable service to the Family and it's Head.

Well, that is it! If you still have any questions regarding the rules, or if some part of them is unclear (or badly written, feel free to PM me here on the Forums or contact me on IRC. Have fun with The Family!

Name: Archibald Candler

Birth Year: April, 1876

Culture: Southern American/Jewish Influence/Urbane

Family/Gang: The South Brooklyn Gang

Field: Criminal

Biography:

Born to the widow of a wealthy landowner on April 20th, 1880, Archie Candler was their only child. His mother unable to support him sent him to an aunt who had managed to marry a Jewish dressmaker and was living in New York City, South Brooklyn. Life in Brooklyn was vastly different than that of the rural south of his first twelve years. Blacks, whites, Jews, Slavs, Italians, anand more intermingled more frequently than in any place he had been to in Georgia.

According to Candler's biographer, Candler spoke Yiddish in addition to English. He bathed every other day and maintained a simple gentleman's suit. His childhood details from age twelve to eighteen are sparse. His name shows up on police records in the Brooklyn precient in 1896 as a house robber and caught him carrying a fine rug out of a window. However an associate of Archie Candler's managed to intimidate the home owner into saying that he had given Candler the rug. The police were forced to let him go.

After this period he operated with a more experienced crew and as their reputation grew they were absorbed into Abraham Herzog's mob who was on the way up in South Brooklyn. Their enemies the Corzine family were threatening Jewish businesses in the area in an attempt to distract from Herzog's growing power leading to a street war in 1897. Archie Candler's crew known as the "Red Hook Gang" as well as the "South Brooklyn Gang" during the Summer of 1897 fought for Herzog as an enforcer and raided rackets of the Corzine while maintaining control over the new territory being torn away from the Corzine by the Winter of 1897/98.

Archie Candler was too young to be expected to manage any business. He was used mostly as an enforcer in which he was much feared. Candler though has already made up his mind on what he wants to do next.

Name: Theodor Pietersen

Birth Year: January 1876

Culture: Dutch

Field: Politician

Biography:

The Pietersen's are one of the oldest families to reside in New York. Arriving with the original colonists, they quickly made a name for themselves within New Amsterdam. They integrated relatively well under the English and later American governments, and became a family of well-known politicians. The elder Pietersen, Nico Pietersen, was a foundation within the community, earning the respect of many, though not immune to the rampant corruption that plagued the city. Theodor is a man of a different sort. Educated at Harvard and earning a degree in law, he came under the influence of the Progressives, an aptly named group within the Republican, and to a lesser extent Democrat parties, clamoring for social change. As a politician, Theodor is likely to use these policies to disrupt the flow of corruption within the city, and to bring about social change. His ultimate goal is to become mayor of New York.

Family: Pietersen's Progressive Politicians

Name: Colman Kelly

Birth Year: 1848

Culture: Irish

Field: Businessman

Family: The Holy Saviors of New York

Biography: Born in Dublin to a lower middle class family most of his family including his parents died in 1851 leaving him as an orphan. In an orphanage however he was adopted by a gunsmith who taught him the ways of making guns as he grew up. By the age of 18 the gunsmith had sold his shop and left with Kelly to go to Baltimore where more of a demand for guns was expected. All through this Kelly became a very religious Catholic who thought that the Protestants who invaded Ireland were heretics along with the rest of the world that practiced Protestantism. For a few more years the gunsmith continued to find a slow pace of business in Baltimore but in 1897 he died and left all his belongings to Kelly. Kelly, hearing about the formation of New York City decided to move there and buy a building in Brooklyn for him to make and sell his guns.

Family/Gang: Five Points Gang, pseudo-independent
Biography: Salvatore Mauro was born in late May, 1879, to two poor farmers near the town of Alia in central Sicily; he had no formal education, but due to his early desire to become a priest, he did learn to read and write, and soon developed of love for history and a particular interest in Julius Caesar and the Roman Empire. It was in late-1892 that he first became involved with the Greco family, one of the most powerful families in Sicilian crime, known for its powerful base in the rural areas of the island; due to his sharp mind and ruthless attitude, he rose quickly, and by the time he turned fifteen, the already intimidating Mauro was made a soldier in the family. It was in 1895 that he, along with two other Greco soldiers and a handful of associates, attacked the base of a rival gang, and plunged the Sicily into a minor war, which was only resolved when Italian soldiers moved in to restore order; Mauro, now a wanted criminal, fled his beloved homeland for America in mid-1896, unable to remain on Sicily any longer.

When he arrived in New York City, the now almost seventeen-year old man, now standing at an imposing 6’4’’ and with a left hook that could knock a man out in a single blow, soon found work with various other Sicilian immigrant families; from his arrival until 1898, he vacillated from honest work (often at the docks or in other menial, backbreaking jobs) and petty larceny and other crimes for groups such as the recently formed Five Points Gang; it was with them that he again became a prominent member, though his disputes with Paul Kelly over his handling of Monk Eastman have become more apparent. However, as of yet, he remains loyal to the gang, albeit just barely.

Name: Menachem Aharon Shamir (alias: Meyer Levinsky)
Birth Year: 14 July, 1850 (age 50)
Culture: Jewish
Field: Crime
Biography: Born on July 14, 1850 as Menachem Aharon Shamir to Jewish immigrants in New York City, the young Menachem had a hard childhood filled with brawls, thievery and poverty. In 1868, after graduating from his local highschool with honors, he was awarded a scholarship at the University of Harvard. Upon his arrival there he registered as 'Meyer Levinsky' instead of his actual name and studied in Law. Graduating in 1876 with a masters degree he returned home to New York City and took up work in a local firm. Eventually he was made a partner in 1883 owing to his successes in his cases. Whilst defending a big time criminal the man introduced him to the criminal world, having him run some errands and various other things. Learning from this in late 1887 he made connections with his fellow Jews in New York City and managed to form his own mafia-like group. For the next decade the group grew and so did its influence, reaching into various areas of New York City and terrorizing many shops for profit(with the exception of Jewish ones). By day Meyer Levinsky is a lawyer, by night a crime boss.
Family: Levinsky Mafia

Well, it wouldn't be the first time. *Ahem* Densley *Ahem*

Imagine my surprise when, having been innocently browsing the thread, I find my good name being dragged into this altercation! I shall have you know, good sir, that at no point during my time on these forums have I been twelve years old! :p

Yes, but I would consider you an illustrious politician! ;)

Name: Arthur MacConnors

Birth Year: 1880

Culture: Irish

Field: Police

Biography: Coming from a dirt-poor Irish immigrant family, his brothers have either turned to crime or have been forced into the city's daily cycle. This shall not be Arthur's fate. He has gotten the chance to join the New York's police force to make a name for himself, and a better life for his family.

Family: MacConnor

Name: Alfred F. Jones
Birth Year: 1872
Culture: Yankee (English)
Field: Politician
Family: Jones Family

Biography: The Jones Family is old money. They've been powerhouses of New York politics since the first Jones Family head "liberated" massive amounts of wealth from Affluent Citizens who had earlier fled the city. Many years later, Thomas and Martha Jones were shot and killed by thugs in front of their twelve year old son, Alfred. Alfred swore on his parents' graves to eradicate crime in the entirety of New York and became a politician in order to bring his ambition to fruition. The young firebrand used his charisma and his parents connections to launch his career, giving speeches against crime in the streets while his fellow future politicians went to elitist colleges far away from the common man. His hardline stance on crime attracted a number of voters and now he pushes the government of New York to increase the power of its police forces even if it means sacrificing a few liberties.

1898 - The Beginning

The Year is 1898, and Mayor Robert van Wyck just declared the counties of Queens, Brooklyn, Richmond and New York to be merged into a modern metropolis, into New York City. Newly divided into five boroughs, those of Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan, the city is ripe for exploitation and mismanagement. The city of 3,000,000 people, mostly white workers of Italian, German or Irish descent are among the greatest asset of the young city. With passion in their heart and the American Dream they search to establish themselves and their family in the New World.

However there is interesting developments in the works. Tammany Hall, the Irish graft and patronage machine that has run the area that was New York City for almost a hundred year, is facing competition. New political dynasties, such as the Jones' from Manhattan or the new Progressive faction from Brooklyn, seek to establish themselves in the fabric of the new city. Tammany Hall, the bodyguard of New York Politics and defender of the Irish, will see if these new up-and-comers are worthy of being taken into the Hall or thrown out of New York.

In the world of business many new store fronts are opening all across the City, all in a hopes of getting rich. Though the political machine of the Irish and their various nefarious racketeers might attempt to make life difficult for them, anything can happen. A small organisation, the Guild of Businessmen, might be a way to change the rough life many business owners face. And who knows, if one is of Irish descent, life might in fact get easier for them with Tammany Hall at their back.

The New York City Police are facing major shortages across all boroughs. Only the Grand Society of Lawmen stand guard against the criminal elements both within and without. Though willing, it is to be seen if the NYPD is able to defend New York City from hostile intrusions by foreign and domestic criminals.

Finally, in the undeveloped underworld of New York City, a small rush of small time gangs are seen. Predominately of Jewish origin like the Levinsky and Southern Bronx Gangs, members of established Tammany Hall streets gangs and their enemies send runners to see what side they will fight. With the Irish or against the Irish. It seems to many there is no other way.

This is the Year of 1898, and anything seems possible!

Welcome to the Game, it has now started.

The smell of Noxious Fumes entered Theodor's nose, eliciting a gasp from him, and pearls of laughter from his companion. The source of the laughter, a burly set man of Polish descent with an ostensibly Russian beard, contrasted with the thin, pale, and clean-shaven Pietersen. The man's name was Dede Rudkus, a first-generation immigrant, and currently working as a hansom cab driver. The source of the smell was less easy to detect. It was a repulsive mixture made up of several loathsome ingredients, including, but not limited to: butchered pigs from the meatpacking industry, heavy industry flowing into the Hudson, the fishermen at the wharves, sewage lining the streets, and a general air of pollution and decay.

Dede, in between bouts of laughter, and in a heavy eastern European accent, asked Pietersen, "Heh. So is eet your first time in New York?"
"No, my dear fellow, I was born, and spent my youth here. This is my first time back in many years, though." Pietersen sighed. "This horrid smell doesn't bother you, does it, Dede?"
"Not as much as be-fore. I 'ave been in New York for many years, and Budapest and Vienna before that. The smell no longer bothered me, and soon it won't bother you."

They continued riding in silence, or what could pass as silence in such a large and noisy city. Outside their window, people could be heard shouting in Chinese, Polish, Dutch, German, Italian, even Iroquois was inter spread within the din. Filth covered the ground, and a horse lay rotting in an alleyway. By mid-afternoon, after what seemed like hours of traveling, the makeup of the city subtly changed. The streets grew quieter, the smell lessened, and English grew more prominent. Central Park, once a green speck down a distant street, had grown progressively bigger into an oasis of nature. They had reached upstate New York City.
