While overall AI is much improved from HOI2, I've been seeing some new quirks that are really crippling them.

Such as:

-Using TACs for air superiority. Every time I load up with an AI they have them doing this, in fact they're only using INT and CAS correctly right now.

-Escorting transports which tends to get them, and whatever lone CA/CL they send sunk.

-As a corollary, overproducing transports. Most AIs are running three or so serials of these, often to the exclusion of anything else. AI Japan from 1940 on built nothing but infantry, transports, and supplies then went to war with only one old CV.

- Germany submarine doomstack of 40 subs that mostly sits in Kiel. Wasteful and along with their general unit overproduction leads to them running out of oil by around 42.

So mostly problems with unit composition, missions and build order so far. Has anyone else seen this?

yes, indeed the worthless substacks in kiel suck balls. Germany produces millions of them, yet never, ever ever uses them (sometimes maybe one small group).

Well using TAC's for AS is not so bad as i have often used them myself when the range of FTR & INTS wasn't enough.
They where also used historically in this role by most sides.

Some of the things mentioned don't effect the AI too badly as AI germany gets its subs produced at 0.1 ic and japan gets its transports produced at 0.1 ic.

TP's for the most part are best left unescorted as they have a very good chance of escape except against carriers and fleets with a high average speed.

If they are using them for AS instead of GS why have TACs at all? This is a pretty big handicap for the AI, as that is the most decisive form of sir support.

I wish something could be done about the escaping transport ships. In real life merchant ships were usually much slower than most warships, especially DD or CL. It's unbelievable that the game punishes players for using escorts.

It's the 1940 campaign as France and the UK are completely sitting on the arses. No divisions are sent to France and they have over 60 in the Home Islands. None, not even a single division. Thanks, Churchill. Glad to know how committed you are to winning this war...

on normal UK games, you can maybe stop the blitzkrieg of france if you deploy all the UK army, but if the AI deploys more then they can be considered lost.

On another note Adonnus, what part of canberra do you live in? do you know Manuka? or Woden mall?

Yes, 1. no British Expedition force

2. Played one game where all the US divisions went to Albania.

3. Italian forces leave Ethiopia completely undefended????

4. No further construction of forts, harbors, airfields, or air defenses, by ai.

I wish the AI was better in the navy/invasion aspect.

Yeah it should be more flexible.

Here's an example: in my game the UK has been conquered by Germany. The US is trying to invade it back. They have enough troops in Belfast to do so. They sail their unguarded TPs to the Straight of Dover and amph attack Dover. The Germany AI responds by bringing in troops from other places in the UK, leaving several beaches undefended. Subsequently, some German ships defeat the TPs and make them flee West to English Channel. The TPs are now right next to undefended Portsmouth. What does the AI decide? Must. Invade. Dover. So, they sail back to Dover, and try to attack the now well-defended province. Meanwhile being bombed by navs, and then attacked and driven off again by German ships. Rinse, repeat. Eventually, defeated and unable to work out what to do, the poor AI sails back with what's left of their TP fleet to Belfast, past undefended Portsmouth and Cardiff.

yes, indeed the worthless substacks in kiel suck balls. Germany produces millions of them, yet never, ever ever uses them (sometimes maybe one small group).

I'm pretty sure that what they're doing is waiting for torpedoes. The AI produces torps separately from the subs themselves. So, basically, the AI intends for a sub (let's call it the XLV. Unterseebooten flotille) which just came off the production line, to be sub unit #39 :)rolleyes:) in the death stack commanded by Doenitz. So, the whole group comes back to port, and the sub is added to the stack.

But alas! The next torpedo brigade isn't ready for another 45 days! Well, we're programmed not to let subs go out w/o torpedo brigades, so, hey... we'll just have to wait, won't we.

Alternatively, if there's a 'tough' battle (1/2 the RN is sunk), and Germany loses some strength points (but no actual sub units ), the whole stack will return to port and wait patiently for the 1 or 2 units to repair. Could take a while! But hey, 'patience is a virtue'.

Then, with effectively no 'real' ships lost (just '2 subs' in the casualties tracker), they head back out, and sink the other 1/2 of the Royal Navy.

Playing Italy - 1914,

After conquering the Senussis in Libya, I am evented (new verb) into WWI. I counter attacked in Albania (one port remained open & I chauffered several divisions in. Launched heavy attacks in N. Italy - Trentino & Triest areas. Doing well with difficulty.

***KEY - - - Russia, Britain, France all at war with Germany & AH & Turkey. Buttt, their armies remain frozen in place. My Italy is only Entente nation fighting.

Kinda a game killer. Any chance of some sort of PATCH - specifically for this?
Others at this forum have reported seeing same ai behavior.

Will replay 1914/Italy to see if this 'freeze' was a sometime aberration.

Not sure if anyone else's notices this but the AI sometimes forgets to put anything into their consumer goods, making their dissent go sky high...

Eugenioso clear your PM box thing!

Currently playing as Japan... and every time I go to check on Germany, that's exactly what's happening. I keep having to "help" them, if you know what I'm saying. Pretty annoying.

Also, speaking of AI Idiocy, I just looked at Britain and France, in late January 1940 (everything's going historical). To my disappointment, ALL of the British fighters and bombers are in the SE Med area, around Egypt and Lebanon, etc. Doing what you would expect them to do, IF... if Italy were actually in the war.

UK and France are also sweeping the whole Med with all kinds of ASW and naval combat patrols. Again, they're ONLY at war with GER (and SLO) at this point, so I'm not sure what they're doing.

My guess is that once 1940 hits, the Allied (Brit air/land/sea, and French navy, at least) AI's are scripted to focus down in the Med. -No matter what. UK has a lot of planes down there.... lot's of fighters. Meanwhile the Aussie, Canadian, and French planes are all being decimated on the western front during the 'Sitzkrieg'.

Another problem with 1914 is when I play as Russia,Germany sends almost his whole army (that is bigger than mine)to fight me,and until I crush them, the French front remains calm,I mean,Germany only annexed Luxembourg, they do not even tried to invade Belgium or Switzerland (because sometimes they have the "wonderfull" idea of invading by the south),and the same Happens with France, the Russian front stays Stalled in Poland four three or four years until I can repel the Germans
