Hi Guys,

I allways give correct names to my armys/divisions, or just names in the transcripted language of the Country in question.

Now I have a question about russian numbers:

you have 1-y (1st), 2-y (2nd), 3-y (3rd), 4-y (4th) - but then: 5-ya (5th).

Whats thr rule behind this? which numbers are with -ya and which with -y?

Hope there is some russian-speaking guy here that can explain his language ;)

It's a gender-related thing.
1-y means First male (1-y otryad = 1st Squad).
1-ya means First female (1-ya diviziya = 1st Division - division is female in Russian).

oh, okay :D

And, is there a grammar rule to identify which gender a word has in russian language? Like everything that end with "ya" is female?

and whats with plural and neuters?

Thank for your answer :)

Male: (-y)
Squad = Vzvod, Otryad
Division (Artillery division!) = Divizion
Battallion = Batalion
Regiment = Polk
Corps = Korpus
Front
Fleet = Flot

Female: (-ya)
Company = Rota
Brigade = Brigada
Division = Diviziya
Army = Armiya
Squadron (naval) = Eskadra
Squadron (aviation) = Esadriliya
Flotilla = Flotiliya

Neutral: (-ye)
Section = Otdelenie

If there are abbreviations, you should watch which words are used, for example IAD (Istrebitelnaya Aviatsionnaya Diviziya) is female, so it's -ya.
There are no plurals in Russian military terminology, but as a tip: use -yie with plurals. 4-yie, 50-yie, 99-yie etc.

Why -ye? Why not -oe? Vtoroe otdelenie (2-oe otdelenie).

-ye is more universal, because: pervoye, vtoroye, tretiye, chetvertoye - all of them end with -ye, and you don't have to check each number. In English oe sounds оэ, нот ое.
