Creation of "Elite" units possible solution?

As I have said in the Waffen-SS thread, this is definitely the way to go. But I'd like way more customization. You should be able to spend as much money on their training and or equipment as you like ( maybe with diminishing returns ), and they should feel somewhat special and therefore they've to be quite rare.

Uh, yes please, and also allow us to choose their doctorine, for example very aggressive, "all terrain infantry" etc etc.

I would go even further and include an in-game counter editor or a collection of counters that you can choose from (and extend by simple use of photoshop).
I would also LOVE to have brigades/divisions earn traits just as the leaders did in HoI3.
Desert Fox Infantry for Africa, higher cold resistance/attrition from fighting in mountains etc.

Elite units would be extremely difficult to show in game as in real life they were not large units but extremely small and specialist, as an example I am ex British infantry, we did not see the Guards, Paras and marines as elite units they were just specialists in their field, as infantry we were still taught and did the same jobs as them, I have landed in landing crafts for beach assault, I have also had the opportunity to do some para training and have also done guard duty at Windsor castle for HM.
Who we saw as elite were the SAS and SBS. All members of HM Forces are trained to a basic level and then you specialize in a particular skill/trade. So instead of having elite units everything should be based around experience gained, doctrines and training to make units better or worse than others

"Immaculate styling" tag on the unit. +5% Morale in combat and increased unit reinforcement rate (everyone wants well tailored uniforms and a regimental stylist).

Shouldn't that be "5% morale bonus while not in combat, complete loss of morale when actual combat is threatened or promised", because we all know how well perfumed prince's with their manicured hair and tailored suits actually prefer to play at soldier in such jobs as palace guard, rather than actually get dirty, or injured, or tired, or thirsty, or hungry, or sober.

Well, I'd be also down for specializing Infantry by letting them gain traits along with experience. But for the fetishists, you should still be able to choose a counter or even assign equipment (Infantry division 101 has the mountaineer trait, so give them a pair of skiers!).

I'm not too sure about actual Special Forces, because in a grand strategy game, they are mostly useless. If I remember correctly, the SAS was deploying in Iraq/NAfrica to do some basic sabotage acts- that can easily be done with a better espionage system. Today, I'm pretty sure that SAS drop in pairs of 4 for a generic mission- an entire division of SAS or even a plain Brigade would be useless- What differs them from regular Infantry at that size? Better training? If you have entire divisions of SAS, they surely can't be trained any better than any other Infantry division.

But still, I'm looking forward to see Infantry divisions gain experience, and the more they gain, the more I prefer them for a mission (thats how it has been in HoI3 for me). I love seeing Divisions get XP, and after a certain degree, I get attached to them and they even obtain their of callsign/nickname (101 screaming eagles is a vanilla example).
If the above gets supported by the fact that I am able to change the counter (spare gaining traits) or customize them in any other way, I'm really happy.

I'd say most WW2 divisional "elite" units were only "elite" because they were affored better and more equipment and personell. Prioritize a division with reinforcements and supplies, provide it with the newest tanks and command it with the best general (ok div. commanders are out but we can still put good generals to corps) and support it with every other way imaginable. The only thing paradox really needs to add is a way to give it a special counter. If you use it a lot in combat it gains more experience at a faster rate than other units as well.

While this might or might not be true, a lot of us for roleplaying and depth purposes would love to have "black counter" units on the field and imagine our awesome "elite units" tearing stuff up. It definitely doesn't have to be OP or have no negatives (obviosly increased cost, increased supply, etc) but it would be fun and somewhat historical.

In HOI2 when the SS units got built, I always would group them together and have them leading my attacks and being involved in the most important battles :)

I agree with the black counter, i'm just saying that that should be all. You can achieve the historic elite unit status using the tools (apparently) in the game already. Although giving a unit black counter could ease the micromanagement by turning on all the prioritizations for that unit.

Black counter and maybe at least a button each for "prioritise upgrades" and "priority reinforce"
