Sons by concubines have no caste?

Does the concubine have a caste? If the mother has no caste, her children won't have any, as well. I've noticed the AI getting itself into marriage with castless women (by the way, where do they come from? events? - seems like a bug, but I don't have any details) and produce castless offsprings.
