I dont think italy's surrender needs anything special if playing as US as brits will likely take and hold afrika and invade italy at some point (like in 43 or so), to make it happen your self you need to invade italy capturing the south italy( not sure if rome needed as well), then italy whill split in 2(pro german and pro allies). But since this is rather easy for england already you prop will not have any difficulty in it.
As for the troops needed for it.
Depending on you naval invasion tech(3/6 max invasion) i prop take 2 marine landing force and invade scicily, once its secure have some attack from sicily and invade from see aswell (1 landing force redeplying from see, 1 via the "land/strait"). Also you might whant to bring some armor/mot/mech when the germans bring units from the eastern front to italy.
Anyway its a simple job, so by the time you read this post you may have taken italy already.
