The open beta for the next patch is now live. You access it via the BETAS tab under properties for EU4 in STEAM. We are making no guarantees at this point, this is just for testing. You can't run ironman on the open beta so when you are playing your epic grand campaign, I recommend running the proper 1.4.1 version. But, it you want to be wild and crazy, opt in to the beta and report any problems in this thread.

When you report any problems, make sure you say which version you played. If you started the game in one version and continued in the other, we need to know this too.

The final version of this update will be 1.5.

Extensive list of changes and some very important fixes here - thank you!

I shall get testing.

One question: Captain Gars was adding a -debug flag to the game for modders, but I don't see that in the list. Is that a missing changelog or did it not make it in to the patch?

It unfortunately did not arrive in time for this Open Beta, it will however make it into 1.5. The above list will be added to in the comming weeks.

OK, thanks for confirming.

One issue I have had with previous patch notes is that they are often missing some important changes to the game - "stealth changes". If I find changes that are missing from the notes, and I list them in this thread (or elsewhere?), would you update the patch notes with those so that when 1.5 is out the notes are complete?

And what do you think about detailing the changes that were made to 1.4 but not in the 1.4 patch notes? I have a list of around 10 so far. If I post those in the 1.4 thread, could they be added to the 1.4 patch notes? It would be great to get 1.4 patch notes updated to be 100% complete, because I think it will help with testing 1.4.1.1 / 1.5 - then we can say "yes that's changed in 1.4.1.1, add to 1.5 patch notes / no that got changed by 1.4"

Thanks again - loving the open beta!

So no change to Hordes and the Protectorate system? It just seems flawed in that no matter the size of the country, you can easily make them a subject and the mechanics just feel out of place.

We try to be as complete as possible. Sometimes we remove stuff from the list that doesnt make much sense for the users, like code structure changes to help future development but mistakes can be made and things forgotten somewhere in the chain. However, in my experience most "stealth" changes are myths ;)

Core timers not doubled for non-existent / annexed nation

I raised a bug report for this earlier today re 1.4 and 1.4.1, and have confirmed it still exists in 1.4.1.1:

Bug report thread with full details: Annexed/non-existent nations do not have doubled core timers.

Quick summary:
  • 1.3.2 added a doubling of core expiry timers for nations that did not exist. It was accidentally missed out of the 1.3.2 changelog.
  • 1.4 mentioned this change specifically in its changelog:
    • #Cores - The cores of annexed nations now take twice as long to disappear
  • But in 1.4, 1.4.1 and 1.4.1.1, core expiry times for nations that do not exist, including for nations that were annexed during a game, are the usual 50 / 150 years.
Example: 1444 start Day 1; Guyenne is non-existent so timer should be 300 years but lists as standard 150:

LUMqptvl.png

- Exported COMBAT_DICE_SIDE to defines
So we can set it to 1 and finally figure out your secret formula? :)

- Detaching a siegestack now always sets "can-attach-unit" to false.
Could you please consider just making false the default, period? I don't use "detach siege" because it does stupid things like detach 1980 artillery when I would only detach 990, and micromanaging can-attach-unit has been quite a pain so far.

Revolutionary Empires are possible now? THANK YOU!

However, in my experience most "stealth" changes are myths ;)

OK so if I find such omissions - that definitely do impact users - can I report them for addition to the patch notes?

I can assure you that any stealth change I report on will be real and will have been verified side by side in the previous version compared to current one ;)

Quick examples (1.4):
  1. Changes to which provinces AI subjects would buy (No Strategic Interest)
  2. Release Nation removing cores of current owning nation
  3. Enemy of Enemy modifier fixed, adding a second or third rival no longe resets modifier to 0 (fixing a bug I raised in 1.3)
  4. Modding: added heir_age and ruler_age triggers and fixed age= in define_heir
The first two were very significant changes. They are mentioned now in 1.4.1.1, but were not at the time of 1.4. There's quite a few more than that, but those are ones I can recall off top of my head right now! (don't have my notes in front of me.)

Please do note that I'm not casting blame here! In such a complex product with so many changes, things will get missed. I just hope we can work together to try and create the most complete list possible. In particular this is very valuable for those of us who do extensive testing of mechanics - there are many very complex mechanics in the game, and I often spend great time testing how exactly they will work. If those mechanics are then stealth changed later, it invalidates my research, and I have no way of knowing unless I go and test the whole thing again. The more complete the patch notes can be, the less this is an issue, because I will know when something is changed I can go back and update my posts / wiki article to reflect that, and judge if I need to re-test it. The more I know that, the more future readers and mechanic testers will be able to rely on the earlier research.

Thanks!

Suggestion: Separate bug report thread?

Besuchov, what do you think about creating a separate Bug Report thread to collect actual bug reports on this patch? Then all actual bugs found in this patch could go to the Bug Reports thread, and this thread could be for discussion.

I think there will be a lot of 'noise' in this main thread, from people commenting on changes "yes that's a good change / why have you changed this?" and then people responding and then people arguing... :) It might be quite hard for you to quickly see the actual bug reports from the comment/discussion?
