I have a strong feeling that I don't see what you want me to see. Have I played a game that lasted 526 turns? No.
I should have been more clear I guess. Yeah it took awhile but I captured every avatar and added them to my army. I placed them on the screen close to how they appear in the game on the wheel of gods. I enjoy a game that allows so many possibilities.

Yes, they are like other units under your command. I've been able to capture and play with all the units in the game besides the end Dremer boss.
You must use the hero unit of the elves, I believe the Spirit of Darkness. Looks like a horse.
Do you mean the Hero unit that is an Elf? Or is it an Elf built from an Elven Village and bumped up as high as you can buy it?
No I mean the unit you are able to make if you play as the elves and build a temple of darkness on 'holy ground'.
In that case how do you end up not winning the game? My relation with a god stops decreasing at -99 without the victory condition on, and if it's on wouldn't you win if you killed it?
When the avatars enter the world you are given a quest to kill them and win the game, but you have the option to decline. Declining still brings the avatar, but the winning condition is cancelled.
Ah that makes sense. I've never actually done an avatar win yet so I didn't know that it comes as a quest. Now then, I'm gonna have to go experiment with this capturing unit thing.
