Actually he might be onto something ... not what he thinks, but onto something. The Canaries survive a lot more than the average Mali ... sooo start with them and retreat somewhere else xD ?
If you really always fail while fighting with Umayyads, what about start Mali > subjugation of some norse/russian > expand from there.

Here you go, Empire of Mali + Reformed West African done in Ironman mode.

A bit cheesy, but entirely playable.

I was close to that and then 40k muslim rebels happened (right after I reformed). Now the muslims have mauritania + africa, but on the bright side - the templars have Andalucia.

So if I manage to survive a bit more I might see quite the interesting battle.

BTW in 4 years ... just how ? Up to Mauritania I get it, but after that ?

I think the game has an anti-KM feature.
Every time I try to cheese it my character gets infirm in the first 2-3 years.

And on the opposite - when I play "legit" I have so much luck ... (Example)
- Mauretania owns Africa. Everybody loves the Sultan and he has insane State Intrigue so he's pretty much unkillable.
- Mauretania attacks Andalucia (Owned by the Templars)
- Mauretania loses
- 1 month later the Sultan dies
- 1 month later a crazy succession crisis for africa happens.
- Mauretania splits up and loses 1/2 marrakesh and fes.
