So, the middle east has gone fully over to the ibadi heresy. I started playing a heretic Hashimid ruler, with the aim of bringing back proper Islam. The only Sunnis left in the world are scattered remnants of old empires like some Seljuks in Russia and a couple of Umayyads in Spain. I started this game as Zoroastrian and made that a powerful religion taking up most of Persia, but now Islam is hanging by a thread and it should be fun to try and save it.

Are there any tricks I can use to re-introduce the sunni religion to Mecca and Medina? It's not fully wiped out, but the remaining followers are few and far away.

If you can get a Sunni character in your court you can have him raise you heir. Eventually he should convert, you'll eventually be him and you can start converting vassals and provinces as usual.

If you dont want to convert from your own religion but still want to restore mainstream sunni, your best bet is having a male sunni character (preferably young) in your court and just holy war the dickens away out of the duchy of Medina, and give the entire duchy title (with all lower titles attached) to him on victory. Or, if you want some extra degree of certainty, holy war the dickens out of the entire kingdom of Arabia and as you win each war dump all titles on him and also create and give him the kingdom title if possible, then grant him independence. Then, BAM, you now have a (theoretically) stable and independent sunni Kingdom of Arabia that should control two of the sunni holy sites from the get-go.
