With the loss of both her lover and her mother, Honoria had become depressed. Nothing really seemed to cheer her op anymore.

Then one day one of her servants brought her a verbal message.

“Your royal highness, we have received news about your land acquisitions…”

Honoria let out a sigh, as she nodded. She remembered her idea of establishing a city in the Venetian lagoon, as she believed it had potential.

“I’m terrible sorry, your highness, but Hubertus seems to have vanished, along with the gold entrusted to him.”

“Disappeared?” Honoria questioned. “As in dead and robbed?”

“Oh no, your royal highness, it is much worse. Hubertus has been spotted in several taverns and we do believe he has spent it all on his own pleasures, rather than those of your royal highness”

Honoria simply nodded and dismissed the servant. Of course she would be betrayed, that should not be a surprise. First she lost Livia, then Mother, and now she had been scammed…

Her eyes clenched and it was as if a fire was born in her. She could not do anything about Livia or Mother. But the lousy scammer? She would teach him not to have messed with the royal family.

“Find Hubertus! Put a reward on his head! I want him brought here, dead or alive!”

She continued fuming, continued yelling at the servants, the slaves and the guards.

The time to grieve was over, now was a time of vengeance!

Gentlemen, this impasse following the death of Gallia is absurd, not least because most have even bothered to speak on it! After many long nights and private discussions, I bring the following proposal: The regency of Augustus Flavius Placidius Valentinianus shall end. However, until he reaches the age of majority (18), he will be advised and guided by a special council comprised of five members. Said members of the council shall be Marcus Valerius Scaeva, Anicius Auchenius Bassus, Bonifacius, Flavius Constantius Felix and Diviticus Maximus.

On a somewhat related note, I urge that Asterius and his family be pardoned and he be allowed to return to Rome with his men in order to serve the Emperor.

I am pleased to see that a lowly man such as me has been chosen to take part in this council. However, as such a body requires preseance of some sort, I need to point out that I feel the old Roman custom should e applied, and the head of this bidy ought to be given to its oldest member. Truly, the strength of youth is wonderful but wise old men can be good advisors too.

Likewise, the Gallic situation worries me but I know the Emperor is a capable man, and I trust his judgment. I will seek an audience with him and then I hope to be able to persuade the Senate to make his word come true.

Regarding asterius, I am pleased to see that Roman servants of the state have come to their senses and have reminded themselves of his brutal treason. While Rome can forgive, I feel that official apologies are in order before we can offer him pardon. This is merely a piece of advice, of course.

As the council will have no formal power I see no reason why any man should wish to be at its head, though if you sincerely wish to be the one to table the debates then feel free.

I find this proposal by the venerable Bonifacius to be more than acceptable; on the matter of the council leader, perhaps we could allow the Emperor to decide which among it will be? Surely that would be the most effective way for this body to function, in conjunction and cooperation.

~ M. Valerius Scaeva, Consul and Treasurer of Rome

A letter from Agrippa Cloelius Felix is delivered to the Senate.

I support the proposed Regency Council, and agree with Comes Bonifacius that since there is no formal power invested into the Regency Council, there seems to be little need for it to have a head. If there is to be one, I support the proposition of Consul Marcus Valerius Scaeva that we should let the Emperor decide.

~ Agrippa Cloleius Felix

Imperial Decree
Honored senators and nobles, i pleasures me to be able to make this my first act as Emperor. Due to the recent rebellion we have all suffered, and this must end, it is time for us all to come together once more as an empire, this is no time for infighting and it is no time for unrest.

I hereby by royal decree order the loyalist forces under to command of Aegidius to come to Mantua.

This will weaken the force of Gaul there is no doubt, but these men have killed each other and the wounds must heal before they can be reunited again.

We also welcome Asterius and his family back into the empire and give them an imperial pardon.

We hope to see him soon here in the capital, but before such things are done he is needed elsewhere. We hereby asks him to travel to Gaul to help Aegidius finish off the last bandits, and that task is completed he is to come to Mantua to swear a new oath of loyalty.

GM NOTE: Just reminding that the deadline is Friday (tomorrow) 23:59 GMT. Get orders in.

Upon hearing news of the Imperial Decree, Asterius quickly wrote three letters, to be sent throughout Europe.

Rex Hermenric, I thank you for accepting me into your realm when I left Rome behind. I will remember my time with the Suebi people, and their honorable King, fondly. But Rome calls to me as it did in my youth and I feel myself yearning to answer that call. Despite the mistakes that were made, I believe that Rome may have a future worth fighting for after all, and I must help in whatever way I can. I hope that you find success in Britannia and that you continue to look out for your people as you have in the past.

-Asterius

Bannerlord Adalwulf, I have received word from the Empire. If you would be able to sail to Gaul then I would be honored to travel with you, and of course, help you with Latin. I believe that this trip will benefit both of us and I look forward to it.

-Asterius

Augustus Valentinian III, I thank you for your support. Despite what you may have been told, I have always held Rome in my heart, only I could not stand to see it run by fools. With your regency ended, I do hope that we will see glory returned to the Empire as in the days of old, when the Augustus was the source of power in the empire. You seem to be a wise and competent child, but you mustn't forget that there is always more to learn. I will begin heading for Rome soon, stopping in Gaul as you have requested. I look forward to arriving home after these long years.

-Asterius

As Asterius finished the last of his letters he went to go inform is family of the good news.

Clerk, how are the preparations coming? Ah excellent, make sure the animals are treated well before the games; no sport in killing a lame animal, and the plebs would hate it. And the food? Good, good. There's no need to tell me, I'm sure the costs will be high, but it is for the Emperor after all. We can't be expected to skimp on such an occasion! Wait- have the invitations been sent? To all of them? Perfect! You have never failed me yet.

Son, come here. I know you've no time for the pompous nobility of Africa. Well frankly neither have I, I secure Africa through solid alliances and the bastards spit at us for it. Still, your wife's conversion should warm their withering hearts to us, and it's important that you are seen to socialise amongst the wealthy if we are to maintain our position. You know, it would be good if you gave a speech towards the end of the night... when everyone's had enough to drink to forget the details, but not so much they forget everything. Say something about Christianity uniting the peoples of Africa, make up something about many long nights trying to convert your princess; make yourself to be some virtuous missionary and they'll be eating out of your hands till your 40! And don't forget to prepare for our travels afterwards! I know it's a lot to think about, not having much experience before, but that's why all this is so important. You need to be seen by the people so they'll know you when you're older. You can't come out and appear to them as some young upstart - they must grow with you. Yes the soldiers are a rough lot, but you need rough men if you're ever going to win a battle. Wars are fought by generals, but battles are fought by the rank and file. When push comes to shove, you need the men beneath you to do the shoving. Don't worry, you'll probably get away with a broken nose or something light; wouldn't look good for a soldier if he crippled the son of his leader after all.

Asterius' men aboard a galley of Segeric.

Comes Asterius had been pardoned by an Imperial edict in the summer of 433 AD. Soon after this, a gift of beautiful Hispanian jewelry, and other items including fine olive oils, arrived to the Imperial court from Asterius in Spain. These lavish gifts impressed the young Emperor and his court, and many were ready to welcome Asterius back to the service of the Empire. [-10,000 Solidii to Asterius, +10,000 Solidii to Valentinian III ]

Asterius then met with his remaining soldiers, and asked them to come to Gaul with him. Despite the men had created good relations with the local Suebi and Hispano-Romans, nearly all wanted to follow their leader on this journey. Some, however, wanted to stay back in Asturica, and they settled a number of farms there. Thus, the Romans started to march towards the Visigoth realm. On the border they were met by the Visigoth Bannerlord Adalwulf, who had messaged Asterius about his intention to join him on this journey. Asterius of course welcomed this, and they started marching towards Dertosa together. Adalwulf had taken a number of his formerly orphan bodyguards with him, and had left his Bannermen, Thane and Siegfried in charge of his troops and lands. It seemed that Adalwulf would be staying in the Empire for quite some time.

Once the men arrived to Dertosa they were greeted by the Visigoth general Sigeric, who gave them necessary ships for the last part of their journey. The two men then embarked towards Massilia aboard Visigoth ships, and with the Roman soldiers accompanying them. On the sea journey, Adalwulf received Latin lessons from Asterius, and learned the language rather quickly. Though from his speech it is still easy to figure out his Barbarian roots.

After arriving in Massilia, these men marched to Northern Gaul, to Armorica. There they helped the soldiers of Aegidius take back Duriorigum from the Bagaudae rebels. The operation was moderately easy, though they took several losses, and the areas weren't yet able to contribute to Imperial Taxation. After the campaigns there, the men returned to south - along with the men of Aegidius who had not joined the revolt. From there they marched along the coastal roads by the Alps, and crossed into the Po valley as winter started to arrive. In Late November, the men arrived at the Imperial Court of Mantua, and Comes Asterius swore fealty to Augustus Valentinian III.

[Asterius' men are now in Mantua, -1,000 infantry to Asterius, -1,000 Infantry to Aegidius]

Meanwhile, the Great Suebi fleet continues to sail between Galicia, Armorica and Britannia. Now, all of Hermenric's personal warband - and most of the Suebi population have arrived to their new homes in Britannia. Maroboodus' warband and some Suebi warriors still stay behind, and the Hispano-Romans of course refuse to leave their traditional homes. Hermenric holds a feast with the Dumnonian King - and is able to bargain the King to grant him more land. Though the King remains skeptical as now the Suebi outnumber the men of his Petty Kingdom. Some Suebi galleys are sadly wrecked by a storm of Armorica. [-10 galleys to the Suebi, -10,000 Solidii to Hermenric]

The Saxon warlord Hengist hired by the Briton High King to defend against the Pict raids calls for more and more Saxons - and Barbarians of any kind; Angles, Jutes, Frisians - to join him in Britannia. This is highly succesful, as Hengist's warband grows stronger and stronger - much to the dismay of the Britons. The Britons are now extremely afraid of Hengist, and Vortigern sends envoys telling him that the Britons do not necessarily need his service anymore - and that he should maybe reduce the size of his force... Outside the Senate Chambers, Rome

Quintus Cloelius Siculus sighed, and paced back and forth.

"Who knew the Senate could be so tiring?!" he thought irritably, "All they do is pontificate until they run out of hot air. So many of them hold so little power. I suppose the trick is identifying those who do hold proper influence."

Siculus closed his eyes as he tried to recall the names of the more prominent Senators. "Who were they?" he mumbled under his breath, "Ah yes. Marcus Valerius Scaeva, Anicius Auchenius Bassus, Septimus Viridius Draco, Agrippa Cloelius Felix, Gnaeus Cloelius Chlodaridubnus, Flavius Iulius Agricola." The list was not exhaustive, but it contained the most influential men in the chambers. Men whose words and suggestions were not confined to the Chambers they talked in.

A smile tugged at Siculus's mouth as he proudly went over the names of his brother, and his brother-in-law. No other Roman family could boast having two of their blood being recognized as significant power-brokers. That did not mean that their power, even combined, could truly match some of the others. Anicius Auchenius Bassus was the immediate example.

Siculus shivered as he thought over the power Bassus wielded. The man had almost had Felix executed as a heretic several years ago, but the trial fortunately became very public and was abandoned. Despite that set-back, he remained as the most influential man in Rome. Talk was that his word carried more weight than that of the Emperor himself. Siculus snapped out of his reverie as the sound of approaching footsteps appeared. Quickly melting into the shadows, Siculus hoped that their would soon be a day when he could proudly walk into the Senate Chambers and have his voice carry weight outside the confines of that room, and travel throughout the Empire.

Anno Domini 433

In Mantua, a number of high-ranking officials and generals of the Empire meet with the still infant Augustus, and they finally agree to establish a council which will guide the Emperor with administrative matters until he reaches adult age. The members of the Imperial council are Comes Marcus Valerius Scaeva, Magister et Princeps Senatus Anicius Auchenius Bassus, Comes Bonifacius, Magister Militum Flavius Constantius Felix and Comes Diviticus Maximus. [+10 clout to each, -10,000 to Imperial Treasury ]

After a long period of civilian Consuls, Comes Illyrici Diviticus Maximus is made the Consul for 434 AD. In East, the general of Gothic origin, Flavius Areobindus, is made the consul. He is also elevated to the position of magister militum per Orientem and assumes command of Eastern Roman forces facing the Sassanid Empire. [+25 clout to Diviticus Maximus ]

Together with the military men convening in Mantua, Valentinian III starts to receive lessons of swordsmanship – and most importantly of military strategy. However it starts to seem that Valentinian III might not be of a military Emperor sort, as he is more and more interested in arts, wine, good food, statues and girls…

In close co-ordination with his most loyal advisers, Valentinian III however comes up with a brilliant plan, deciding to use most of the wealth he has acquired lately on a huge project in Noricum. Many abandoned mines are bought by the Emperor, and even new gold deposits found. This gold starts to flow into the Emperor’s treasury, much to the discontent of the Senate. Many however fear that such a sudden surge of gold might cause further inflation…

The Augusta also works hard to expand her investments into the arts, creating the Honoriae Academiae Artibus (Honoria’s Academy for the Arts), where talented and poor art students and potential artists are granted scholarships and wealthy students can pay to be under the tutelage of some of the greatest artists in the Roman Empire. This turns out to be highly successful, as new artworks and statues are sold to all parts of the Empire – and even beyond its borders.

In Gaul, Aegidius hires a number of blacksmiths to work on a number of foundries in Augustunemetum. They mostly work on new weapons for the Gaul army, but these weapons are not even close in quality when compared to the ones manufactured by the Po valley workshops. However, producing everyday equipment for Gaul farmers and urban population is way more successful. However, the stables project is finally finished, which provides Aegidius with better horses for his cavalry, and extra income for selling horses to local populace. Aegidius also sent some engineering units to Eastern Gaul, where they were supposed to construct the Limes Burgundionum. The Burgundians – who consider themselves loyal to Rome are of course annoyed by this, and their King demands a clarification on Roman intentions, and that all works are ceased. This is however unneeded as a harsh autumn storm destroys most of the foundations of the forts and towers. [-25,000 Solidii to Imperial Treasury ]

Comes Bonifacius hosts a grand celebration at Carthage in the name of the Emperor. Games are arranged for the plebeians and free bread – and even some meat – is distributed. Behind the scenes, Bonifacius holds a private feast with African administrators and nobles, with Vicarius Anicius Auchenius Symmachus being the most important guest. Bonifacius’ son Sebastianus also meets these various important people. [-20,000 Solidii, +25 clout ]

Comes Bonifacius orders the construction of seawalls in the major coastal cities in Africa. The Limes Tingitaniae is also finally finished, and stability and peace in Africa are secured. [Limes Tingitaniae finished, 1/3 Africa cities seawalls, -75,000 Solidii to Imperial Treasury]

Comes Bonifacius spends rest of the year touring military camps in Africa with his son. Comes Diviticus Maximus starts building canals and systems of irrigation along the Danube river. This would improve Imperial agricultural income there and perhaps even reduce effectiveness of invading cavalry because of the now wet terrain.

As Diviticus Maximus arrives to Mantua for the Council negotiations, he presents a wagonload of the finest Pannonian beer as a gift to the Augustus. To the Augusta he gives a beautiful vase from the East. Diviticus Maximus is also seen walking around in the palace grounds, hoping to find out what actually happened to Flavius Aëtius – and Augusta Galla Placidia. In late November joyous news arrives from the villa of Salona. Diviticus Maximus’ wife Maxentia has given birth to a healthy son who is yet to be named.

Princeps Senatus Anicius Auchenius Bassus is again busy. First he recruits a number of elite bodyguards among his most trusted clients and they start receiving a very nice pay. Then he recruits 3000 bucelarii, who will be spread to his properties outside Rome, in Tuscia and Latium. They are also paid well (thus the name “biscuit eater”) and they receive arms from the foundries of the Po valley. Many of them are also veterans who have wanted to join for a more peaceful task.

Marcus Valerius Scaeva spends most of his year in Rome itself. He works hard in the senate, creates important business ties, and is able to make the urban administration a bit more efficient. He also generally meets with important administrators, and even the ones sent to ports by A. A. Bassus. After this distribution program, S. V. Draco departs for a long, long journey. Blessed be the Lord, and blessed the goods He provides to us, the faithful ones. It is with great pleasure that I inform you, people of Rome, about the birth of the firstborn of the gens Julia, a healthy and strong infant that shall wear with pride the name of such a prestogious family upon his shoulders.

I pray that our stem inherit his father's wisdom and the love to the Roman people of his mother. It is certainly great news, and I hope that all the Empire feel glad about it.

As soon as I've recovered from the vicissitudes of birth, all of Rome, regardless of class, will be able to visit the newborn and enjoy their regal figure, worthy of his ancestor Julius Caesar.

God bless the gens Julia, and blessings upon he who will be named
Gaius Anicius Iulius.

Julia Cornelia

Sigeric knelt and began to pray, and as he prayed he thought back on his life. He had began as a young soldier killing his first man at age sixteen, he had been a Roman a peasant who his father had been extorting. As the years went by he did more killing and gained more experience, he had never enjoyed taking another mans life but he knew it was a harsh reality of the word he lived in. Through levelheadedness and fortune has risen to take his fathers warband. Suddenly the memories stopped as he remembered were he was, his church his pride and joy, the new center of religion in Dertosa.

He left his seat and walked out. The Visigoth realm would be a place were all of the Arian faith could practice freely. His thoughts then turned back to his past, he remembered what Dertosa had looked like when he first arrived. The city was a wreck parts had been completely torn down and abandoned and other parts looked like they hadn't been touched in 500 years. He had fixed that spending hundreds of thousands on renovating the city. When he had first arrived trade was stagnant merchants feared to journey to far up the road as bandits were a common pestilence. And the city had, had no merchant fleet to speak of. He had fixed that, his men now patrolled the roads and his merchants ruled the seas. As the years had passed Romans and Goths began to mix and have children and a new era was on the horizon.

The next year of his life would be pivotal his actions would go down in the histories and he would be remembered by his people for his service to them. He walked to the harbor. His journey would begin here.

”Left, right, shield up, low blow”

He kept going on, never ending and never taking a break. He was a good trainer but it was just so dull, doing the same over and over, did he have nothing else to do. Looking at him you would not think so, he had gray hair, experience and seemed rather proud of his new position as a trainer. I think he believes this could be his way of secure a future for himself and his son, his son was a very good fighter and seemed to be able to grasp the concept of commanding an army. If only i could learn something from him, we often sparred in the training, and i could see his father wanted us to be close, nothing like being the friend of an Emperor. As the fighting kept going, i kept taking hits, had this not been a wooden sword i would have been dead a long time ago. I got tripped over and fell to the ground, I could see the disappointment in his eyes that i had not gotten better yet, he started speaking but i was pissed off. I just told him to shut up, he took a step back and seemed quite surprised by my answer. The rest of the students just looked a bit in confusion about what to do, keep fighting or stop, they stood there and the silence kept for a bit.
I stood up and walked over to the side the take a cup of water, as i started drinking he ordered the rest to continue. He came over to me and just stood and looked, as i finished drinking it turned my head to the side looking at him, i said sorry but i was still quite annoyed. He just stood there for a bit before he started speaking.

“I am sorry your imperial highness, but it is important that you learn this. The troops are the backbone of the army and you will need to be able to command them, if you wish to be remembered as a strong emperor.”
“I know, i know” I said as i went over and picked up the sword again, i knew i had to do this but i just couldn’t get myself to continue. When it was finally over i let out a brief sign of relief that i could do something differently.

I couldn’t wait until later today when i finally would find out how the Noricum adventure would go.
