The Land of Smiles

Thailand in the second World War
800px_Lord_White_Elephant_1.jpg

Hello everyone and welcome to my first HOI AAR, where I'll be playing as Siam/Thailand.
I tried to make an AAR before, over six years ago (yes, it's been six years since I last posted here! boy, do I feel old now). That one died before it could really get started. But six years is a long time, and I like to think I've grown a lot since then. So I'd like to give it another shot.

I'm pretty new to both writing AARs and writing in general. I'm also by no means an expert at this game. That means the quality probably won't be stellar, but I'll do my best.

Difficulty/aggressiveness: normal/aggressive
Version: Darkest Hour 1.03
Start date: 1933

So without further ado: let's get this show on the road!

His Majesty's Table of Contents:
Part 1: What the hell's a Siam?
Part 2: Party like it's 1933
Part 3: Rama VIII: Acoustic Boogaloo

Part 1: What the hell's a Siam?

Say hello to the lovely little country of Siam. What will soon be known as Thailand.

Darkest_Hour_2013_07_03_18_53_24_75.png

“Who’s a cute widdle country? You are! Yes you are!”

Siam might not look like much, but don’t be fooled: the Siamese are plucky bastards. During the 19th century Siam was the only country in South-East Asia to keep its independence. Although they had to give up land to the British and the French, Siam has so far managed to avoid becoming a colony of any European great power.
In 1932, our country went through a bloodless revolution that reduced the powers of the monarch and gave it its first constitution. The after-effects of this coup are still felt today. Siam in 1933 is an unstable country. We might expect a coup attempt in the future.

Siam is surrounded by French Indochina to the east, Britain to the south and the British Raj to the west. None of these are countries we want to mess with at the moment. Also of note is Japan, which is doing quite a bit of saber-rattling at the moment. They might become a bit of an issue at some point in the future.

Fear our snappy dress-sense! Fear it!

This is our government. I’ve already moved us one step closer to democracy, but foreign analysts still see us as a dictatorship. We only have one choice for most minister positions right now.

Darkest_Hour_2013_07_03_18_53_50_66.png
Buddhists with Beakers

Siam's armies and industries are decades behind the times. If we’re going to survive as a nation, we’re gonna have to innovate, and fast. Luckily, most of our tech teams are relatively competent.

Darkest_Hour_2013_07_03_18_54_04_99.png

For Science!

We get to work on our two new projects: “Beeping thingy that makes us do science better” and “Better food-grow-ification methods” (scientists are not good at naming things). Let’s hope we can keep funding our research teams. If only we had some blueprints…

Darkest_Hour_2013_07_03_18_54_46_60.png

They say love conquers all, but I'd like to have some guns as a plan B.

This is our army: four divisions of 1921 infantry with one cavalry detachment and one engineer brigade. We also have two destroyers, a tactical bomber squad and a fighter squad. Most nearby great powers would be able to beat us in their sleep if we went to war now. We’ll have to expand our army and use our terrain wisely if we’re going to have even a chance of winning a war.

Darkest_Hour_2013_07_03_18_56_25_76.png

That globe isn't going to warm itself.

A professor of economics was once asked to give a summary of Siam’s industrial capacity. His response: “What the hell’s a Siam?” That’s our industry in a nutshell. We have a few railroads and some factories, but not nearly enough. I order some factories to be built in Bangkok (the only place where I can actually build industry).
We have a lot of dissent and not a lot of money. Luckily, there’s a solution to both of those problems: have our industry produce loads of goods, then sell those goods to the dissenters! We get rich, and the dissenters are too busy playing with their new toys to notice. It’s masterstrokes like this that will turn our country into a great empire!

"hey say love conquers all, but I'd like to have some guns as a plan B."

Love it, and i'll be watching this AAR.

Kill that dissent first, while it's cheap and then the world is your oyster.

Part 2: Party like it’s 1933
1933 is a big year for Germany. A new group that calls itself the “Nazi Party” takes power. They seem to be led by a bad Oliver Hardy impersonator. His Majesty, a devoted Three Stooges fan, disapproves.

Darkest_Hour_2013_07_04_12_14_09_71.png
A moustache that funny couldn’t possibly harbour an evil man.

April 1933. We take a gamble and try to apply for membership in an alliance. If the application succeeds, we will get blueprints early. Early blueprints would mean we would catch up on our research sooner. We would also get the suppot of the allies whenever we are attacked.
If we fail, however, we will have uselessly thrown away a bunch of precious time and money. Our diplomats tell us that we have a chance of less than one-in-five Will fate smile on us?

Darkest_Hour_2013_07_04_12_23_56_87.png

C'm on, daddy needs a new pair of shoes!

Darkest_Hour_2013_07_04_12_24_04_18.png

Boo yah!

Oh hell yes! Our application went through on the first try. I seriously didn’t expect that. Looks like our decision to mass-import rabbit feet paid off.
(I didn’t savescum this. This really did happen on the first try. I’m as surprised as you are)

July 1933. A new nation is born. USA liberates the Philippines as a satellite state.

Darkest_Hour_2013_07_04_13_19_59_43.png
The Philippines clearly have excellent taste when it comes to flag colours

Darkest_Hour_2013_07_04_13_24_27_37.png
Our research is trucking along nicely. We have decided to focus on industry for the start. After that, we’ll try to go for infantry and land doctrine.

Darkest_Hour_2013_07_04_13_20_21_01.png
The allies give Thailand a series of blueprints. These will come in handy when we finally start to improve our army*.

Darkest_Hour_2013_07_04_13_21_02_12.png
August 1933. The government decides to increase the conscription time from two to three years. This actually makes the global headlines of the News of the World! His Majesty is pleased with the attention, although he questions their decision to accompany it with a photo of the German army. Or their strange decision to report the news as if the reader were making the decision.

Darkest_Hour_2013_07_04_13_32_11_33.png
Our production at march 1934, a little over a year after the start of the game. We have stopped putting all my IC into consumer goods and have started building factories. We still can’t build them anywhere but Bangkok, which is somewhat annoying.

Our research at march 1934.

* I actually got a second series of blueprints too. But I was a derp and accidentally turned off fraps instead of recording it. It was mostly useless naval tech anyway (“Gee, thanks Mr. Chamberlain. I really needed better aircraft carriers with my 10 IC.”)

1920s production technology and a new factory on the way. You may be looking at something like 13% growth in your industry per year, quite the achievement by most standards.

I am comforted by the fact that this will give you the ability to produce two aircraft carriers in parallel while still satisfying your need for civilian goods. I can also think of no more practical use for your IC/Days. Seriously, why build an army or alleviate poverty when you can have Fleet Carriers!

I have literally zero experience with carriers (I barely have any naval experience in general) so I have no idea if you're serious or joking. Do you really think it'd work?

I'm mostly joking.

yes, you could build the carriers, but you'd be late to the war. more importantly, fleets really require that you can build a large mass with escorts so you'd be limited in what you could fight. As a project after you take lots of territory, maybe, but for now, stick to an army/air-force i think. Of course we don't know your objectives yet :p

Interesting choice, allying with the European powers that own colonies surrounding you.

The European powers won't surround me forever. My plan is to wait until Japan takes over Indochina, then try to attack Indochina. If all goes well, they will be too busy in the other theatres to send enough soldiers to stop me. At least, that's the theory...

Lovely start!

Subscribed! Looks interesting!

Interesting. Will follow :)

Thanks! I hope I'll be able to deliver.

Part 3: Rama VIII: Acoustic Boogaloo

Something big seems to be stirring in the international world. Germany has been making a lot of noise these days. Barely a day goes by without news of the nazis doing something shady. They’ve even tried to coup neighboring Austria! Why they would want that dingo-infested hellhole is anyone’s guess.
Darkest_Hour_2013_07_08_21_03_35_62.png

But it’s not just the Germans that are making noise. The Russians just appointed a new field marshal! Our agents believe that the last marshal tragically slipped on a bar of soap, whereupon he fell right in the firing line of a practicing firing squad. How tragic!
Darkest_Hour_2013_07_08_21_02_46_53.png

Rebellion is threatening to overtake Sinkiang. All of its outermost provinces have already been conquered by the rebels. By the way, am I the only one who thinks that screenshot looks a bit like a baby in a crib? The black bit would be the crib itself, the airbase looks like its eye, the river looks kinda like a derpy mouth, and the lower yellow province looks like a sheet.
Darkest_Hour_2013_07_08_21_06_42_40.png

It's like a Rorsharch test you can play at home.

We get some more blueprints this year. Still no industry-based ones, unfortunately.
Darkest_Hour_2013_07_08_21_01_18_83.png

We also finished our first factory. We immediately start work on another one. I now have some spare IC which I decide to put into upgrading our existing units.

2 March, 1935: Disaster strikes! Our king: Rama VII has died. Millions are left wondering if life even has meaning anymore. Never again shall his rugged good looks liven up the congresses and parliaments of the world.
Darkest_Hour_2013_07_08_21_11_16_67.png

If the Thai monarchy had been a boy band, then he would have been the “cute one”

His successor takes on the highly original name of “Rama VIII”.
Darkest_Hour_2013_07_08_21_11_24_25.png

The next one will either be a prequel or just reboot the whole franchise.

Darkest_Hour_2013_07_08_21_11_41_79.png
5 March 1935. We are presented with a new slider change. In what direction will the young king steer the nation? Will the problems in Europe escalate? Will the conflict between China and Japan finally come to a head? How will any of this influence Thailand? And am I only asking these questions to procrastinate on doing something that’s actually useful? Find out next time in: The Land of Smiles!
