Mysterious CTD's seem like a bigger problem than anything the patch addresses, I think I might just hold off.

They're not so bad. I'd say one every couple of hours of playtime, but if you restart the game and reload, you can go on just fine.

The patch solved the problems I encountered, but maybe it's somewhat savegame incompatible as I experience CTDs.
