Part I: The Horde Awakens
1st January to 6th March 1936

The vast Steppes and desert between Russia and China are the crucible of ancient glory. The great Genghis Khan once led the people of this land to conquest over most of the known world. Since those glorious days of victory, the empire has crumbled, divided and finally, vanished. For centuries Mongolia was occupied by the upstart Qing, descendents of defeated peoples. But the spirit of Mongolia cannot be tamed, and now a new leader, our God of War incarnate, having first descended upon the occupiers and driven them out, is now prepared to lead us once more to the grandeur of victory and the subjugation of those who oppose us.

Mongolia today:

Our old enemies, the Qing, are now vastly weakened, with Chinese warlord states arising to oppose their dominance. To the north, Russia is immensely divided and whilst possessing a large army, is unlikely to oppose our plans in the short term. To the east, the Empire of Japan grows in strength and may be a potential ally. The years of war ahead of us will not be easy, and many of our number will die, but the Baron is confident that he, and only he, can restore Mongolia to its’ former glory and marshal a horde to sweep all before us.

Our military technology, while far behind those of the great powers, is at least on par with that of most of the Chinese warlords. The Baron, in his wisdom, insists instead upon the expansion of industry to provide weapons of war in abundance.

Our current government:

The Baron steps up the rhetoric, and is more than prepared to back words with actions (shift towards hawk lobby).

Current production:

Our military consists of 9 divisions, 5 infantry and 4 cavalry, along with an artillery brigade. Mongolia lacks a large population, and so for now new divisions are restricted by lack of manpower. However, a new artillery brigade is in formation and the expansion of infrastructure will greatly speed our future conquests.

Only by calculating our opponents’ strength can we decide which battles are the wisest to fight:

A week into the new year, with the Russians distracted, the Baron declared our intention to reclaim all Mongol lands:

Boris Rezukhin, the Baron’s old ally, is handpicked to lead our Government after the assassination of the Russian president:

Soon, it is decided to offer our fellow Buddhists, the Tibetans, an alliance. The alliance is accepted, and with this we have begun our Horde’s expansion, the development of industry and secured an ally. So far the great powers are completely complacent, sheep, unaware of the wolf in their midst.

Welcome to AARland!

I'm loving this writing style and premise (Sternberg's Mongolia) by the way. Can't wait to see where this goes.

Ohhh :D

Onwards to glory and madness!

Part 2: A New Khan, A New Empire
March 7th – 1st August 1936

The Baron’s programs for a strong Mongolia have been continued. However, the first signs of international resistance have arisen: the Chinese warlord state of the Mas have been bold enough to steal Mongolian aerial technology. This insult will not go unpunished. Currently tensions are rising between us.

A border conflict with the Ma has now infuriated the Baron to a point that aid has been dispatched to help our brothers. On the same day as the Baron declared our support, our second artillery brigade entered service.

On the 11th of April the foolish Ma had the arrogance to declare war upon us. Immediately, Mongolian forces descended upon the pitiful warlord’s men:

In the west the Cavalry divisions, boosted by another from the borderlands, assaults Aletai and Karamay:

In the east 3 infantry divisions attack Linhe. In the west the garrison at Aletai surrenders almost instantly.

With Aletai under our control, the Baron orders all 5 cavalry divisions onwards to Urumqi:

Meanwhile our first steps into computing technology have led to faster research in other areas. Whilst not directly impacting our military, the Baron in his wisdom knows that long term pursuing greater research resources will benefit the horde.

Our Tibetan allies begin assaults from the south once their army has mobilised:

With new construction technology developed, it is decided to improve our infantry weapons, equipment and tactics. For now the horde is small and must rely on quality over its’ enemies.

It has now been more than a month since the war began, and it is time for our mighty horde, led by the Baron himself, to descend upon the Mas capital. Whilst possessing a larger army than ours in total, the Mas inferiority is soon evident, and they have been forced to commit forces south against Tibet.

By May 26th Urumqi has been conquered, the pitiful defenders no match for us in quality and quantity. Next an assault upon Qumul is launched, whilst in the east the final push is begun.

Our allies have generously shared some of their technological secrets with us:

The cowardly Ma, fleeing before our might, now attempt to save their own skins. There will be no compromise!

Our victorious forces now control Xining; cutting off what is estimated to be three infantry divisions. This is the final nail in the coffin for the warlord state, which is forced to capitulate.

As a warning to all those who would dare attack us, the land of the Ma is now pillaged by the victorious horde:

During the violence, the Baron accepts the title and distinction of becoming Mongolia’s new Khan. A new empire is declared, and soon the world will once again fear Mongol conquests. Two new cavalry divisions are formed from our brothers in newly gained territory, whilst to the South Tibet has the arrogance to leave our alliance. They will be dealt with.

Oh man, a KR Mongolia AAR! I played a very fun game as them a few months back, cut short by Russia's failure to collapse, and subsequent interest in regaining their railway. Jerks.

I'm interested to hear why you chose the loot option over the peaceful incorporation option. If memory serves, you suffer some dissent for peaceful incorporation, but you get a few free divisions and no infrastructure or industry loss. That's what I chose anyhow. Maybe I'm not brutal enough to be a Mongolian Khan. :p

My last Mongolia game got cut short by the greedy Japanese not being grateful for my help against Qing China.

I knew I had no chance of victory after that.

Gotta watch out for the Russians! Ive played a few Mongolia KR games and found I only have trouble with them if they go Soviet (in which case I'm doomed). I thought it fit the storyline better and with the first pillage event there are no divisions up for grabs but
I did lose 10 infra in Urumqi (although it was a 10 infra province to start with)!

Part 3: No Betrayal Goes Unpunished
2nd August 1936- 1st January 1937
With the defeat of the Mas and the reassertion of our claim over the lost lands of Genghis, our new Khan now turns his attention south towards the mountainous land of Tibet. A nation of Buddhists, they are our brothers in spirit, but have been betrayed by a corrupt and cowardly political elite unwilling to aid us in further conquests, and for that they must be punished.

On the production front the expansion of infrastructure is delayed in order to produce 2 more cavalry division along with 4 armoured car brigades to give strong support to our warriors.

To the east the Qing are stirring up trouble with the Japanese Empire. Our empire and Japan may now share some common ground in their distrust of the Qing. This bodes well for a future alliance.

The horde is now ready to lay waste to Tibet in a mighty push to Lhasha. The Khan plans the invasion to begin on September 1st:

War is declared on the traitors!

Tibetan power is concentrated almost entirely in the capital of Lhasa. Our men are racing towards it on a broad front, both those on foot and those who ride on steeds as did their forefathers of the golden horde.

Days after invasion the first sighting of Tibetan forces occurs. They are shown no mercy and are pushed back by our righteous brothers, who deliver to the Khan rapid victory despite the difficulty in mounting an offensive in heavily mountainous terrain.

The Tibetans have proven themselves no mightier than the Ma, and are suing for peace. There will be no mercy:

A last ditch defence is mounted at Lhasa:

On October 7th General Tornovsky’s host enters Lhasa. The cowards who opposed the new Mongolian empire are unable to escape and are summarily executed. The same day our rule is declared over all of Tibet. Leaderless and with their army defeated, our victory is undeniable.

The Empire’s growing need for resources has prompted us to search for raw materials within our own borders... for now:

It is decided to spare Tibet the fate of the Ma, in exchange for an oath of loyalty to the horde by the remnants of the Tibetan army. A mountain division is formed from these repentant troops.

With our revenge satisfied, the Khan now considers where we shall expand next. To the north Russia grows ever more divided, with rumours of armed rebellion commonplace. For now, our army is being redeployed upon the border with Shanquing Tianguo. Once this nation has been added to our growing empire, our manpower shortage for now will be relieved, with the Khan convinced that thousands will rally to our cause once they witness the devastating glory of the horde.

However, word has reached us of small bands of Tibetan and Ma guerrilla fighters hiding in the hills and mountains. For this reason it is considered unwise to leave these lands undefended for long, and so the recruitment of three garrison divisions with military police to roots out the rebels is planned.

Our first three armoured car brigades roll out of Urga factories. They are slow, lightly armoured and primitive by modern standards, but with brave warriors to make use of these iron steeds they shall deal death to our enemies.

Our infantry equipment and fighting doctrine are once again improved:

Our industrialisation, though delayed, is now truly underway:

With our army of 13 divisions now deployed along the border with the Shanquing Tianguo, backed up by 6 brigades, 4 armoured cars and 2 artillery, the Khan now seeks to gain this pathetic fragment of Chinese territory before the Qing can swoop upon it. We must act quickly if we are to be able to exploit the looming clouds of civil war in Russia...

Very nice AAR campaign you have going here. Mongolia definitely seems like a very interesting country to play in KR, with lots of room for expansion and growth. Although I kinda wonder how "Mongolian" it really will be, since it is being led by a bunch of mad expansionist Russian warlords with an army that is more and more going to be drawn from non-Mongolian populations (Chinese, Manchu, Russians, etc). Oh well, just makes the AAR even more fun to watch! :D

Keep up the good work!

Part 4: Where the weak see danger, the strong see opportunity
January 2nd – April 6th 1937

Our empire, having now expanded southwards must decide upon a new direction. Immediately at the start of the New Year the great Khan’s agents began swarming the newly conquered territories of our empire to encourage those with promise of developing into great warriors to join our horde. At the same time the training of new divisions is accelerated, a move sure to exacerbate the tense relations with our neighbors.

Early in the New Year our next campaign is chosen: a rapid victory over the mountain strongholds of the Shangqing. On February 5th offensive operations are begun. The Khan’s strategy for a rapid victory over a numerically superior enemy is to achieve a breakthrough at Lanzhou with our cavalry divisions, who will then advance towards Yan’ an and Tianshoui to split our enemies in half and secure victory. To prevent reinforcements, diversionary attacks are launched across the frontier.

While our forces begin the attack, to the east Transamur overthrows Kolchak. In response the Japanese refuse to recognise the new regime’s legitimacy, although they are forced to accept this nation leaving their sphere of influence.

With our industrial expansion requiring ever more raw materials, mining operations are expanded:

Japan, embittered by the loss of its’ Siberian puppet, engineers a coup which sees Australasia entering their alliance:

On the front in China our final push towards the enemy capital is initiated:

A Korean uprising is the latest problem to assail the Japanese empire, meanwhile:

Like others before them, the spineless leaders of Shangqing offer peace... with our refusal their surrender and annexation is immediate:

Our diplomats in Tokyo report that the Japanese are showing consideration for our entry into their alliance:

However, first it is decided to increase our influence in the Japanese capital:

In the defeated lands of the Tian it is decided to show lenience in order to attract fresh recruits to the horde:

The Khan begins devising a new and resourceful doctrine:

In early April our new cavalry divisions finish training:

3 additional armoured car brigades and a new infantry division now begin formation out of our new recruits:

On the 6th April our formal entry into a military alliance with Japan is declared. With the support of Japan, we can now expect other great powers to hesitate before attempting to interfere with our plans. The Qing have been robbed of their prize, and find themselves unable to expand north or west. Our next move now is to enlarge the horde, modernise our equipment and develop industry. With Japanese assistance, we hope to make great advances technologically, although the future is shrouded, with the Russians to the north regaining national unity.

Thanks for reading and the support! That's a good point - although I imagine Ungern is seen as a reincarnation of Genghis Khan by many of his men so 'Mongolian' enough! :p But yep, the more land we conquer the more momentum we will build :D

Part 5: Rallying the Horde
April 7th 1937 – April 19th 1938

We have overrun the Chinese warlord state of the Ma, defeated the traitorous Tibetans and most recently expanded east into Shangqing Tianguo. The Khan has decided that as Russia overcomes internal division to become a more formidable power, an invasion of the Qing empire should be prepared in order to secure our south eastern flank, gain access to the sea and eliminate an old enemy. First, however, it is decided our armed forces must be developed and expanded.

In mid April Russia declares its commitment to isolationism. This gives us a window of opportunity to conquer China and raise a horde mighty enough to seize Siberia.

Japan, still struggling with Korean rebels, now faces a second front against an uprising in Formosa:

On May 1st the Korean rebellion ends with Japanese victory:

The Khan’s wisdom is shown to all by the plentiful resources now gained as a result of our investment into mining operations:

After Japanese victory in Formosa, Japan announces its’ decision to seek northern expansion into Russia. This may cause problems as this may risk war with Russia, for which we are not yet ready:

Perhaps in response to Japan’s aggressive stance, the Russian’s increase investment in their military:

With 2 of our 3 garrison divisions now deployed, and 3 more armoured car brigades ready for deployment, our expansion will soon result in a truly mighty horde:

After months of discussions, the Japanese agree to share with us their blueprints. This will result in a rapid development of our military technology!

With Japanese blueprints, the development of a Mongolian airforce now seems more viable:

An aerial horde would truly strike fear into the hearts of our enemies. The Khan’s great vision is for hordes of cavalrymen, supported by dozens of armoured cars charging forward as a great tide across a vast plain, long range artillery shelling the positions of terrified opposers and aerial bombardment adding to the chaotic glory of the battlefield.

However, speculation of a future Mongolian airforce and an invasion of the Qing is interrupted by an unexpected syndicalist revolution in Russia:

A Russian civil war soon erupts, with Germany backing the whites and the Commune of France supporting the Syndicalists. A strike north with Japanese support now seems tempting...

With Siberian separatists now threatening rebellion in the east, we begin redeploying divisions to the Russian border:

Russia shows its weakness as it is powerless to stop the Cossacks and Alash Orda seizing territory:

With 1938 arriving, the Khan decides for victory it is necessary to take control of all industry in order to have complete control over our expansion:

Just as our horde is expanding, the fiendish Qing expand southwards with annexation of the AoG! To the east Transamur announces its intention to expand into the Primorsk region. Both of these developments conflict with the destiny of our great Khan and empire!

Transamur, now returning to the Japanese fold, seizes eastern Russia:

On April 17th a golden opportunity is presented with the declaration of Siberian independence...

Ah, the best of possible events! Isolationist, collapsing Russia, Soviet discord, and independent Siberia. I suppose that the Qing absorption of the AoG was unwelcome, but the events were still heavily in your favor. I am so very very jealous.

Keep it up! I'm enjoying this AAR quite a bit.

Part 6: Northern storm
April 20th 1938 – May 25th 1939

To the north lies a great expanse of land, rich in raw materials and industrially productive. Many Mongolian peoples lie beyond the border, awaiting liberation. Our forces are frenzied with the prospect of seizing Siberia, which will see us once more demonstrating to the world our commitment to the restoration of the Mongolian empire.

Our Japanese allies, however, do not wish to join us in our northern crusade. For now, our diplomats in Tokyo suspend military and technological co-operation:

The next day our horde pours across the border:

Our strategy for a swift collapse of the Siberian state involves the rapid capture of industrial and administrative centres:

A week after our invasion, the Japanese, seeing the foolishness in not joining us, declare war on Siberia. An alliance is now reconsidered:

The Japanese express the greatest desire for the resumption of our military cooperation:

Meanwhile our forces advance deep into enemy territory:

With the Russians seizing Svedlovsk in the west, the last remaining strategic location occupied by the Siberians is Omsk.

An offensive to seize the city is directly led by the Khan is begun:

Our victory is cemented on June 16th:

To ensure our domination over our new north territory, cavalry divisions are sent north to mop up the last resistance to our rule:

To manage such a vast area three more divisions will act as permanent garrisons in Siberia:

Our losses were great in the Siberian campaign. Our armoured cars also proved little protection against Siberian artillery. The Khan orders the development of an alternative:

In late august the Russians triumph in their civil war:

The Qing have now annexed the Yunnan Clique. Our greatest priority must be to now raise a horde with the assistance of Siberian industry to launch a pre-emptive invasion with our Japanese allies:

It is decided our horde will have to rely on the quality of our men to defeat the Chinese masses:

Finally, the foundation of a future Mongolian air force is now under way:

Oppressed Mongolian territories stolen by the Russians in Siberia now proclaim their allegiance:

We have massively gained from the Siberian campaign, yet our old foe the Qing grow stronger with every passing day. Our best chance is now to build and train our forces as swiftly as we can, and then to launch an invasion along a broad front, which, when combined with Japanese landings on the coast, should be able to prevail over the sheer mass of Qing divisions.

Im surprised at how lucky I was with the events - I've never seen a Russian civil war start after 1937, and with 0% partisan activity prior to Soviet Russia's independence, I didn't expect it. I think the Qing will be difficult to take down though, with 80-90 divisions currently, although I can't complain!
Thanks for reading! :D

You've already had much more success than I ever had. I didn't even know that there were events to grant national status to Siberian provinces! Good stuff, to be sure.

Time certainly isn't on your side with regards to the Chinese, though you are closing the gap industrially, if not in terms of manpower. Are there any events associated with conquest in formerly Russian Central Asia that might grant you an even larger base with which to work?
