Vassalizing a merc company

I've heard of it, and ave even seen it in a playthrough, but I'm not sure how exactly you do this.

I know it's not simply selecting the merc leader and granting him land. So what is it?

Or was I look at mods? But I KNOW it happened in one of my recent playthroughs, no mods. And I swear I recall conversations about it from a long time ago.

And I'm not talking holy orders, I'm talking mercs.

I've done it a couple of times, but I don't remember exactly how. I know that the first step is to run out of money while employing a mercenary company. Then there is a chance that they will invade you. Let them win the invasion and gain some land. I don't remember what you have to do after that.

that sounds about right. I'm going to test this later on.

think you need to be their dejure liege,when you click on their icons it moves you to the county they're originated from,then you give them some land,have good relations and they accept. would like to know about other tactics as well =)
