CK2 was a very broad game, which tried to do a lot of things but couldn't complete them all. But can this type of DLC expansion model be used for EU4? Discuss.

there is no room for "discussion". it has already been officially confirmed that this is the new Paradox DLC/expansion policy. the only thing this thread could be is a battlefield between supporters and detractors of "DLC"'s.

Lets please return on topic. The question was legit: how well good CK2's DLC model fit EU4? What could it expand and how?

There is one thing to keep in mind while talking about the new DLC model: almost all of the new features that came with the expansions had to be given for free in order to make the game playable in MP no matter what DLC the players have bought, thus expansions practically only unlock unplayable factions. Could this pose a problem for a game where there is nothign to be unlocked?

Also, what kind of DLC could be made for it? Jokes like SI2 aside, that could be discussed.

Yeah, the DLC model doesn't really seem to work well with this game....I'm pretty sure all nations being open was already confirmed...I guess it could be for new features added, but most of the "new feature" DLCs in CK2 were accompanied and made possible by unlocking a nation ie Pagans/Muslim...

Extended timelines. Want to go back and play when the byzantines are in a better position? Sure - and here's a bunch more flavour events and stuff for them.

do not mention the aztecs

It's already been confirmed that it will be the SunRISE Invasion in EUIV. Japanese schoolgirls and giant robots with swords come to claim your lands!

CKII may be shallow in a few areas but it does its main focus very well, dynasty building, intrigue and character interaction. It's a bit like a dollhouse for grown men. I do hope that they seek to improve the combat and economic aspects of the game, though perhaps in the next iteration.

As for DLCs for EUIV, I hope they go the same route as CKII. I'd rather pay now and then for a steady stream of updated features than wait a year for a big bunch to be released at once.

You know, while the big DLCs has generally been about unlocking previously unplayable factions, the bulk of the CK2 DLCs has actually been graphics and music.

The bigger DLCs for EU4 will most likely be somewhat like Legacy of Rome; regional/national (and/or temporal) flavour, essentially lifting countries from the lower tiers to tier 1 when it comes to country specific content.

Other types of DLCs I can quickly think of: timeline extensions, modding-for-the-masses tools (like Ruler Designer), alternate history scenarios, and save import/export.
