That happens about as often as when BB fleets defeat CV fleets; i.e., it can happen but it's not likely.

We can do some experiments, but I think the burden of proof is on those who think a destroyer can defeat a battleship despite having inferior stats in everything that matters.
Looking at the first picture there is something weird. The US lost one BB and 5 DD and China lost 12 DDs. But the range of the encounter is shown beyond were the DDs could even fire. Were there Chinese planes involved as well as the US planes?
You've also got the issue where the BB fleet is poorly put together, with too few screens.
I never use fleets of below 30 ships in any case.

That might be the floatplanes? Sorry, I don't usually pay attention to the casualty stats.
