First game as Irish Count - loved it. Who should I be now?

    Hi

I have pretty much finished my first game where I started as an Irish Count and retired after creating the British Empire. I now would like a different experience.

Question: Who should I play next? I would like a completely different game. I have SoI but I am happy not to play that. Can you play as the Pope? I thought that might be different. I fancy using a mod like tPatT because that adds lots of cool features. Is that a good idea?

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

    Andy

I say, I found it to be very fun to play the Duke of Provence and try and form Burgundy and try to expand its De Jure area as much as possible (which means sticking to a single King title and any other titular king title you might have around). There's a high level of subterfuge involved seeing as how you're a vassal of the Kaiser as are those around you, but the possibility of uniting all the wealthy northern italian cities under your dynasty is quite a pleasing challenge. And of course, after you grow mighty enough, you can always declare independence and stablish yourself as a new

    There are many options.
    - Start as the duke of Holland or roundabout, become king of the surrounding area (Netherlands) and declare independence from the Holy Roman Empire
    - Start as the Persians, create the Persian Empire and keep both the Khanates, the Shiite muslims and the Byzantines of your back.
    - Start as the Arabs, create the Arabian Empire while keeping the pope from creating the kingdom of Jerusalem.
    - Start as the king of Norway, create the Scandinavian Empire.
    - Start as one of the Russian dukes, and create the Kingdom of Rus and eventually the Empire of Russia.

Of course, creating empires isn't the only thing you can do, but it is a pretty good goal to work towards. You can also decide to focus on crusades or jihads, working on destroying the infidels.

Try Brittany and attempt to take either France or Britain from their noses. Or I've been trying to play as Brittany and keep the Spanish Christians from going extinct. Brittany is a fun little country perfect mix of small but large enough to expand onto Ireland if you want. Once Spain goes down if you decide to stay autonomous gl when the Muslims set their sights on your ass.

After I'd done the Irish county game I tried out some of the different smaller Dutchys or Kingdoms. The tougher options are ones bordering Muslims, mainly in Iberia or Apulia (Sicily). Other than that I'd say just try something bigger now. If you managed to go from county to empire you should be able to handle most anything in the game ^^.

I've always been a fan of the "start from the bottom, forge a new kingdom" games. Right now, I just formed the Kingdom of Pomerania starting as a Count in 1122... always fun.

Burgundy would be an interesting route with it, I think. Aquitaine would be awesome to aim for, too, but you're on the clock with them if you want to be able to press de jure claims.

Form Greece, starting as a duke or count in the Byzantine Empire. Then declare independence and try to destroy your former liege.

    Here's one I did earlier:

Edit: yeah, didn't quite get there. Shia Jihad came down on me at just the wrong time, which is always a risk.

Thanks for the ideas guys. Brilliant stuff.

I too like the old start at the bottom and work my way up shin digs. Might go for the Count to Kingdom of Pomerania.

After I played an Irish Count, I played as Duke of Barcelona and managed to marry the Empress of the ERE. Turned Iberia and the Byz into the Juggernaut.

They're always a hot spot. You need a high profile alliance and no-one allies with a lowly count, so you are fucked.
Death is lighter than a feather, duty heavier than a mountain.

“How do you fight someone smarter than yourself?" Rand whispered. "The answer is simple. You make her think that you are sitting down across the table from her, ready to play her game. Then you punch her in the face as hard as you can.”

I really enjoy taking all England either as an Irish, Scottish or Welsh count, but you have done that.

The normans in Southern Italy are a really interesting play through as you will find that you expand rapidly into North Africa and start having problems with your vassals so far away.

They almost always let you become a vassal, unless you get the "shitty land" malus.

    Right now, I started as the Count of Iceland and I have become the duke! :3 Trying to figure out where to go from here, but it's a fun game and I recommend it....despite it being a bit slow. ^^;

I'd really recommend Aragon. You start out with just one county but unlike the other Spanish kingdoms, you can expand rapidly with de jure claims. It's good for those who like to work from the bottom up, since you start out tiny but with one- and two-county enemies to beat, then you have to fight large taifa emirates and the duchy of Barcelona, and once things have turned in your favor in Spain you'll have to deal with Mauretania and the French, or you can turn your attention to the Mediterranean. Always plenty of interesting stuff to do.
