ACA discussion thread

We in the moderating business have a saying "If you want to ensure it will never be read, put it in a sticky or announcement".

Well you know what they say: You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. Easy for me to say I know...I'm not creating stickies or announcements and then suffering the frustration of having them ignored and then having to repeat myself to people who should have read them in the first place. I still think, though, there can be no harm in a general announcement in the main forum sections promoting the ACAs. I read stickies...and at least some others must read them as well given the number of views I see associated with them. Short of blasting every forum member with a PM, what other options would there be? No action at all seems like a shame to me.

I've been thinking about this and I think that when we're promoting the next round, we should try to really focus on the new format in the actual "advertisements", not just in the AwAARds thread.

Looking at my personal experience, with the category format I always procrastinated, waited to see how people categorized the AARs and then slipped in my votes, if I happened to remember, in the last couple of days. And I'm a very active member of the community - just one who obviously doesn't have a clear idea what's narrative, what's history book, what's comedy and what's gameplay (hey, I can't even categorize my own stuff) and is such a perfectionist that it feels better to not do it than to do it "wrong". One has to assume that we have a lot of more casual members who had a similarly hard time (or even more so) with this for various reasons.

So yes, in the previous round the ACAs had a lot of publicity in AARland. But chances are a lot of people saw the ads and went "oh it's this confusing ACA thingy again" and didn't even click the link. We have to make it clear before that point that all one has to do now is to pick one's favorite AAR(s).
