Thread: Europa Imperialis Map Mod (EIMM) Alpha Release

  1. #41
    Cheexsta;

I like the terrain view, it has an interesting ancient map feel.

    Bug Report:

While working on the adjacencies I was having a problem getting Corsica to Olbia working both ways!
Problem is that there are two Olbias', 289 and 639.
639 is the correct one 289 is in the Ukraine!

Here is the new adjacencies file. Just copy and paste.

    From;To;Type;Through;Comment
    155;156;sea;732;Sicily - Mainland
    639;160;sea;749;Corsica - Olbia
    171;302;sea;816;Byzans - Asia
    249;303;sea;816;Lysimacheia - Mysia
    177;185;sea;807;Thessalia - Euboia
    185;186;sea;809;Euboia - Kyklades
    103;303;sea;816;Lemnos - Mysia
    18;215;sea;816;Gibraltar - Africa
    -1;-1;;-1;-1
They have all been tested and work. You may notice that
the one from mainland Europe to Britain is missing. This is
due to the fact that there are now two sea provinces between them.
I think this is more accurate than in the vanilla game because that
strait is wider than the others.

Going for the leathery look eh? Looks good, I guess you'll add small trees and stuff to make the terrain more easily identifiable, but it certainly looks nice.

It's supposed to be an antique-style map, not a true (or exaggerated, rather) colour representation of the world.

(For completeness, I used this paper texture and these GIMP tools.)

Yep, that's the plan This preview was just to gauge reactions and see if I should continue in this direction. So far it seems like the way to go

Ok, update on the terrain view:

I've neatened up the coasts with a darker border and have added trees, deserts and such to the appropriate areas. There's some cleaning up to do (particularly in Persia) but I'm very happy with the result. Next task is to tackle the messy sea textures and re-colour the rivers

    Thoughts?

Looks fantastic. Looks like you could roll it up nad put it in a satchel!

Also thanks for the thanks for the adjacencies file, I was glad to help.

Have you fixed the double Olbia problem? I just renamed the other one 'Temp'
so I can find it later.

One of the problems with maps about antiquity is that there were often many places with the same names. Alexandria, Seleucia, Antiochia, Heraclea, etc. were all pretty common names. I think for such duplications I might try to find some way to make each one different so players can easily find the one they're looking for.

you prob could have the name with like a random A for lets say northern africa in the name to be more specific then the players would only need to know the continent its on

The new terrain graphics look cool, IMO.

I'm in the midst of an EU3 game (and also a Play-By-EMail game of Combat Mission: Battlefield Normandy, for that matter), but I'll fire this up as soon as time allows. Hopefully. I'm particularly interested to see how the increased number of sea provinces affects the game.
I support separation of charity and state.

    That terrain texture is awesome!

This mod actually looks already like you've put more work on it than Paradox put on the vanilla Rome and it's just an alpha.

The map mod (EIMM) is intended to be as simple as possible, with only changes to the actual map and minimal changes to everything else (Maurya is the only country I planned on adding). Adding new countries, tradegoods, cultures etc. is all planned for the total conversion mod (EITC) that I have in the works. So no, I won't be adding any Hibernian tribes for EIMM, but I'll keep the information aside for EITC.
Is the total conversion mod going to be released when it's fully done or will you first release it on alpha stage and so on as well like this one?

Thanks everyone, I've had to take a bit of a break to stop myself from burning out again but I've gotten a fair bit of work done for the next version. I've reworked the terrain texture to be a little less cluttered, so that now the terrain markers actually show the type of terrain that province contains, and have completely revamped the terrain system. The vanilla terrain system has been simplified and have added a few new types of terrain (dense mountains, impassable desert and rough seas in particular).

I'm also very pleased to see that the map texture has been well received Thanks to everyone for the feedback!

Eragon King: I was thinking of something like that, but make it a little more specific to the time. For example, I already have Alexandria in Egypt as "Alexandreia Aigypta" (which, unless my rusty Greek is failing me, means "Egyptian Alexandria"), so I am planning on following a similar naming structure for other provinces with identical names.

UniversalWolf: the extra sea provinces seem to be working as I had hoped. It's how harder to maintain naval superiority, simply by virtue of the fact that you can't always know where the enemy fleet is located. The AI has a preternatural ability to sense your fleets, but even so it's easier to outmanoeuvre the enemy. Naval strategy seems to have really expanded by having the extra provinces, from everything I've seen.

Y: thanks mate, good to see you around again

Wave: thanks for the compliment EITC probably won't have an alpha release. Everything is so tightly intertwined, from laws to governments and national ideas, that it would not be possible to release it in small chunks like EIMM. Work has started, though

i thought it was smelling a little dead here...
but cheexsta think it would be possible to add the Total Conquest mod to the next alpha to add more things to do on the side and possibly remove at a later date?

Rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated...

So, between getting a new job for a short time and then being inundated by my other job over the silly season, I've been unable to mod much for the past few months. But with Christmas on the horizon, I can see this mod getting back on track within the near future

Just for the small handful of people who still play this game

Having played it for some time as Carthage:

The waters between Mallorca and Corsica often don't display pathfinding sanely, and moving from Corsica to Mallorca once took me up along the coast of Gaul. I suspect there's something off in the adjacencies.

A lot of coastal provinces display armies as standing in their inland counterparts.

The beautiful terrain texture isn't displaying for me - I get a kind of pinkish desert. I'll reinstall tomorrow and see if that fixes it.

Honestly, having the extra provinces hasn't really changed how the game has played out, but it's somehow reassuring to know they're there.

How close do you think you are to finality, and is there anything you need/want help with?

This is fixed in the next version. I went through and sorted out all positions, so it will work a lot better (and the game loads a lot quicker, too!).

Textures aren't complete, they'll be added in the next version.

Good to know The map is really intended to just lay the groundwork for the future total conversion mod, and hopefully provide other modders with a new map to work with if they'd like. Those extra provinces will help to provide space for all sorts of fun interactions to happen. It'll be especially useful in representing smaller tribes/poleis/etc. and will make playing as the smaller guys more interesting, IMHO. In the long term, of course; for now, it's pretty much just a fancy Vanilla version.

I'm not close to finality at all, still have lots to do on the map mod and the total conversion has only the bare skeleton build in place. I'd be really grateful for any help you'd be happy to give! Thank you both for the offer
