Thread: I Always Ignore Japan and Ming as I Cannot be Bothered

I Always Ignore Japan and Ming as I Cannot be Bothered

I'm playing DW 5.1 (I'll play 5.2 soon as it is Official).

I don't play for World Conquests as I find them incredibly boring. I like games to be like Real Life, with hundreds of countries fighting and scrapping and hating each other. The more intrigue, back-stabbing and action, the better.

So basically I always ignore Ming and Japan as with their special rules to conquer and incredibly high infamy requirements to conquer, I just cannot be bothered.

Anyways, I was wondering which countries other players cannot be bothered to interact with, assuming they are not going for WC, of course?

What special rules to conquer and incredible high infamy requirements regarding Ming are you talking about? You can just take their lands with Holy War (1bb/prov, before 1650) or Imperialism (2bb/prov) just like most of the world. For the southern and coastal bits, it's definitely worth it too.

Of course, playing AS them is troublesome, but it doesn't appear that's what you're talking about ('cannot be bothered to interact with').

I possibly got Ming wrong, I just assumed with their special celestial government they would be like Japan.

As I normally concentrate on conquering Europe and the Middle East (for their oil so my country will rule in 20cen) I don't normally go that far East anyways. My Bad sorry.

Basically I just am trying to find out which countries/provinces other players ignore in their games, and why?

For Example, I don't bother to conquer lots of islands, as the extra micro-management of pirates and hostile invasions makes them very annoying to me personally.

I ignore Greenland and Australia. Too poor and the PTI annoys me. Also rarely take the Falklands, Madagascar, Pacific Islands. The huge provinces in Siberia that take 3 months to march through and have a force limit of like -1. Albania.

The Malvinas and some pacific islands can be useful to reduce naval attrition, although if I can I grab Tierra del Fuego - might get wine or coffee there, I don't know how they manage to grow that with a subpolar climate. In the Pacific go for the only 2 islands with a chance to produce sugar, all the other are craptastic.

The pacific coast of north America is for me too far off to bother with.

Central Asia is the most awful spot on the map: wrong culture and religion, 1 base tax, wool.

Western Africa is slightly less awful, but within fighting range: tropical, lotta grain, really angry natives.

I avoid playing as England because moving my troops onto cogs is such a chore. Same deal with Byzantium unfortunately, I just don't find the naval combat any fun in EU3.

I take colonial ventures / qftnw just to stop that gorram decline event from firing, then don't actually make any colonies. I never want to play as Russia ever again, because killing rebels in Siberia is the least fun I've ever had in the game.

Islands are definitely a hassle because of the kludgy way that Paradox does loading and unloading troops on and off of ships. People have been complaining about this since the original EU, and "how do I load troops onto ships?" is the most-asked question by noobs, hands down. I'd hate to say how many times I started loading troops onto ships when I war started and then forgot to come back and check them in 10 days/two weeks after they're finally loaded. I think every single game I have ever played that involved loading troops onto ships, trains, APCs or whatever had a more elegant and user-friendly way to do it than this. To start with, ordering your troops to walk out into the ocean just looks stupid. No wonder it never occurs to the noobs to do it that way.

Personally, I like to make a clean sweep of the Caribbean islands which tend to be valuable, but sometimes I just don't because responding to revolts is such a hassle. Or if I'm flush with troops and feeling lazy, I might just drop off 3K in every island and leave them there. Island revolts tend to be quite small, so that works.

Probably a deliberate misspelling to avoid swearing. He's referring to the National Decline event that fires for large countries that do not have one of those two ideas. It's sort of a prestige thing; even if you are powerful and expanding people feel that to be considered a "great power" after 1600 you must be a colonizer.

No, just one or the other. If I'm short on diplomats it will be quest so I can use conquistadors / explorers instead of generals and admirals, or if I'm colonizing horde territory (or even just colonizing a tiny bit in North Africa or something) I'll take CV. The National Decline event fires somewhat frequently for nations that do not have at least one of these two NIs and gives a penalty to research in one field which you're required to choose. What is especially grating about this event is that even if you do have a vast colonial (and non-colonial) empire, simply not taking the NIs means you get the decline event telling you that you're declining because you aren't expanding colonially. Even if you are.

Yet the event only equals the loss of 240 income. Pretty much every NI offers more than that after 1600 I'd say.

This thread is about illogical things you do to avoid things that frustrate you.

The Golden Horde/Orthodox region as a non catholic. Too much converting to do while at the same time having to westernize, just an overall pain in the ass.

I always avoid Africa, because it's dirt poor, and they start with higher tech than you, and by the time I realize it's an option, it's either already been conquered or I am to lazy to be bothered. Plus, getting there is a pain if you're not Castille.
Those of you helping us test the repulsion gel today, just follow the blue line on the floor. Those of you who volunteered to be injected with praying mantis DNA, I've got some good news and some bad news: bad news is we're postponing those tests indefinitely. Good news is we've got a much better test for you: fighting an army of mantis men. Pick up a rifle and follow the yellow line. You'll know when the test starts. ~Cave Johnson, Portal 2

Colonizing in general feels, to me, like the most tedious and frustrating part of this game. I never play as any of the big three(Spain, Portugal, England) because of the amount of time and income I have to put into it, also maintaining a huge fleet and troops for protecting them from enemies makes it such a hassle.

You don't feel the evil joy of soiling virgin lands with your boots and colonists? You are missing out, man...
