Goals of the AAR
Well it's too late for regrets. I suppose some of my goals are a bit easier to lay out in hindsight, but oh well!

Become a Great Power-COMPLETE
Currently fluctuate between 4th and 3rd in the world.

Claim all rightful Equestrian Lands-Extended
Extended by The Equestrian Empire event, and later by Maneifest Destiny.

Spread Friendship and Love to as many as possible-In progress
Most of South America lies within the Equestrian Sphere and Alliance, expansion will resume sooner or later

Be a dominant Industrial power by endgame
Currently Equestrian Industry places it around 2nd and 3rd in the world, until end game though the position isn't secure.

Try to avoid a Great War
Simple enough, gotta wait and see.

Become a major power in the Asia-Pacific realm-In progress
The Annexation of Hawaii and Alaska, along with Baja California make this more feasible, expansion into Oceania from Hawaii will be key.

Prove Equestria to be more prestigious and interesting then Human nations-In progress
Equestrian Prestige is mid-level, placing it again in a shifting 2nd through 5th place, until end game this is also in the air.

So here you can see laid before you my humble goals and aspirations, at the very least I'd like to keep Equestria stable and prevent government collapses, as this is the 19th Century and it IS still a monarchy, gotta cling to power, ya know?

1830's-1836

This is how North America looks in the year 1836. It is not as our maps remember, and it will not ever be that way thanks to the fateful discovery of the nation of Equestria in the year 1816, after countless years of remaining luckily undiscovered by western explorers and missionaries.

YEcia.png

medvg.png
sIu7F.png

The unique situation that the ponies of Equestria found themselves in were quite good actually. The multi-race species had three different, highly productive sub-species living within their boundaries. The stubborn and ingenious Earth ponies, generally relegated to farming and manual labor. Unicorns, the academic and cultural heart of the Principality. And the Pegasi, the militaristic race of the clouds, always up for a challenge and also in charge of controlling the weather for the Earth ponies benefit. The spread of industrialism and liberal ideas would shake the empire and potentially fray the Unity normally displayed by it's inhabitants. But Princess Celestia, and albeit a bit less enthusiastically, Princess Luna, were going to try and see out the storm and bring Equestria to the forefront of the world stage.

1836 began with a flurry of activity in the fledgling nation. In the name of maintaining cultural homogeneity and preventing the potential racial issues that would stem from humans settling in the Principality, Celestia decreed an indefinite ban on human immigration until further notice. Humans already in the Principality were granted exemptions and permitted to remain on their property and maintain their previous rights(1). The international fallout from the decree was nearly immediately felt at the court in Canterlot, as the Austrian, Spanish, and Swedish diplomats all formally closed their embassies in protest, and the British, French, and Russians all lodged formal complaints with her majesty. The implications for the Equestrian state were dire, and all efforts were made to attempt to assuage the inflamed passions of the western powers, Celestia was not willing to become the next international pariah so soon after becoming a modern nation.

9MC9N.png
dP10b.png

The main focus of the Principality was one Celestia personally oversaw, the technological progress of the fledgling state. For in her journey to Europe in the years prior she had learnt just how much power knowledge contains, and the world altering power the secrets of technology held. Her first royal decree on the issue of technology was the decision to pursue more modern and easier methods to extract the precious minerals that were buried deep underground in the Valmansas territory, not yet fully accepted as a state due to the lack of governmental structure in place(2). Her hope was that due to their ingenuity when it came to ways to ease the workload, that the Earth ponies would be able to contribute greatly to the development of Mechanized Mining machines and equipment.

e90hM.png

At the end of 1835, the first ever national census was held in the Principality and completed nearly a month before the new year. However, the information was compiled and then processed for nearly two months, leading the census to be released a few days before 1836. The results were rather dull, most had expected the census to not turn up a whole lot of important data or unexpected facts. The population was nearly split 30/30/30 but the Earth ponies, being the ones who grow and handle the food had edges out a small majority in the overall population records. The true minority, the Buffalo people of Valmansas and Springdale edged in only 1.5% of the entire population of Equestria, and with their number shrinking it is only a matter of time before their culture may disappear entirely. The religious portion of the census was no shocker, aside from the Buffalo, every single respondent was identified as a Celestian follower, seeing as any attempt by a western missionary to spread a faith was quickly sweeped out of the nation. Most of the ponies were identified as Conservative, with small Liberal and Reactionary leanings among the population, showing a high level of satisfaction for how the Twin Sisters had ruled so far. Aside from the large amount of farmers, artisans were the other main profession at the time, taking nearly 20% of the population in small cottage industries and such.

pXeYA.png

JiMMA.jpg

The budget at the start of 1836 was a bit more complicated. The few years of international trade that they had been involved in had taken a toll on her economy, as the Principality quickly ran up a decent trade deficit, losing nearly 100 Bits a day from this alone. In the interests of protecting Equestrian goods and services, and hoping to stem off the quickly growing deficit, Celestia raised the national Tariff to nearly 50% on all imported goods, coupled with the tax hike from all classes this essentially yanked the economy from the brink of a debt cycle that would surely be exploited by the western nations to validate an attack.

nqkV7.png

The state of the army was much better. The Equestrian Armed Forces were a strong, modern force standing in 1836 at around 32,000 soldiers, of whom around 6,000 were enlisted as militia mostly for the sake of border patrolling and additional policing if needed. The estimated limit for enlisted ponies was said to be nearly 90,000 soldiers without straining the meek supply and armaments system in place, and if necessary another 90,000~ ponies could be mobilized from the fields and mines to take up arms. This made Equestria out to be a major competitor to the United States and even to an extent Great Britain on the continent at least. The navy, not the Equestrian strong point, was modern but not strong in numbers. The current Generals are Shining Armor, a bit of a dashing, young lover pony, and Osric Velvet, a quiet and admittedly, a bit incompetent at her role. The Royal Fleet contained 4 ships of war, 3 of which were Frigates accompanied by 1 Man-o-War, All under the command of Rear Admiral Lyra Star Bright, an inspiring leader but a bit of a hoof-licker to higher-ups, making it a bit hard for her to organize well. As another royal decree, Celestia willed that 9 new divisions were to be raised from assorted provinces and that the shipyards of Canterlot, Fillydelphia, and Manehatten should begin the construction of more ships for the navy.

6zMQs.png

83uIP.png
Gj7xV.png

The other main point of concern for the Principality was the Pacific Northwest. Inhabited almost entirely by Griffons, the area was now being contested by the United States on the grounds that it was their 'Manifest Destiny' to claim the continent coast to coast. Of course, Celestia knew this claim was bogus, so to ensure that the Equestrian settlers would be safe and able to claim the region and bring the Griffons safely into the Principality where they would be treated much better then the USA would treat them, she issued orders to the Royal Guards to move to the area referred to by the Americans as Oregon while the Royal Border Patrol was detached from it's normal duties to march north into what was known as Washington and safeguard the settling of the pony population. Of course the move was expected to elicit a negative response from the United States. The troops began their marches, and Equestria stood by patiently, prepared to take action if needed to defend their rightful claims to the Northwest.

gSNm7.png

rYmP8.jpg

(1) In truth, there were nearly 0 humans in the Principality at the time, perhaps 100~ of the 2.73 million beings in the Principality were humans. The additional text was meant to attempt to placate the western powers, but it did not have the effect desired.

(2) Many claim the real reason behind the denial of statehood was the Buffalo minority, and that many wished that more ponies could be moved in before any move toward real statehood were made.

1836

The year of 1836 would seem to be one of the more quiet years of Equestrian history. Though there were many wars preoccupying the other nations of the world, and even one involving Mexico and the newly declared nation of Texas, a war had as of yet avoided the young Principality. This did not mean that other nations were ignoring it, quite the contrary. On the 7th of February, the President of the United States of Central America, Francisco Morazan, ventured to Canterlot with an official proposal approved by the USCA Congress to offer the Principality a binding treaty of military alliance, in which if either were attacked by a third party, the un-involved signatory would pledge to join the war if so requested by the other(1). Princess Celestia was quick to jump on board the idea, signing onto the treaty after very short talks between herself, Luna, and Francisco, who seemed to be taking the normally alarming sight of talking, colored Equines rather in stride. After the meeting was adjourned, Francisco was knighted an honorary member of the Royal Guard, the first human in Equestrian history to ever be given the title even in ceremonial regards.

IJQ8g.png

After Francisco returned to Guatemala, attention in the capital shifted to a major victory over the United States. The mere presence of the armies of Equestria to ease the path for the settlement of ponies had dissuaded the Americans from attempting to claim the region, essentially abandoning the small number of humans who had already moved to the Northwest to the Principality. Technically, under the rules of the Immigration Law, when the land was claimed they would be allowed to continue living on their land without harrasment from law enforcement or citizens alike, another lucky chance that Celestia had included the provision protecting humans in the Law. The native population of Griffons was not as cheery about having their land settled by perfidious little ponies and although violence was not common, occasionally small acts of racially charged violence were reported against settlers, mostly in the eastern side of the region known as 'Washington'. Amounting to little more then 6 cases of arson and 2 cases of assault however, Celestia felt confident that the majority of the Griffons found the settlement agreeable, or at least they were neutral to the prospect.

Mf4IZ.jpg

An alarming new trend was discovered in late August during a rare police investigation in the area around Canterlot. When the local constables raided an abandoned apple warehouse a few miles out of town due to a few disgruntles calls from nearby Unicorns about dreadful noises coming from the building at night, they were shocked to discover an underground printing press, and a large number of extremely liberal pamphlets, some of which even called for the curtailing of the Royal Sisters powers. The Age of Liberalism had dawned in Equestria, and it would bring with it dangerous challenges to the 1000 year rule of the traditional order. It was highly doubtful that many ponies would subscribe to the extremist and radical Jacobin movement for democracy, but the simple knowledge that the ideals of armed revolution in the name of overthrowing a nearly eternal order was shocking to the Sisters and the nobles (Almost 78% of the upper class were Unicorns in the last census) and would severely alter the mindset of the government in the future toward reform. The Royalty was on edge, or at least Celestia was.

W86QZ.png

Deciding that it was time for the Principality to attempt to expand it's global influence, and gain a more powerful set of allies to add with the USCA, Celestia set about on a goodwill mission in an attempt to persuade Mexico and the United Kingdom of the benefits that would be present if there was to be an alliance, or at least a cordial understanding of each's interests and a promise to respect them. Her first meeting was with the current president of Mexico, Jose Justo Corro, who was able to remain in officer for more then a month thanks to the surprising victories the Mexicans had against the Texans. Unpopular besides the gains in Texas though, it was doubtful that he would be reelected if Mexico was able to hold an actual election for once as he devoted most of his time to religious matters and even passed a law requiring literacy tests for voting. Though it seemed futile, Celestia had at least made a decent image of the Equestrian nation among the political elite of Mexico, hoping that if the president was useless, then at least she would try to improve relations with those closest to power. The only binding thing of note to come from the Mexican stop was an agreement that Mexican soldiers would be free to pass through Equestrian lands so long as they made no intention of remaining there, and an agreement by Celestia to pay a small portion of the Mexican war cost. After her stop in Mexico City, she flew to Guatemala to affirm the friendship of the USCA and confirm the dedication she had to the treaty. After that she flew briskly to British Columbia, to the island of Vancouver where she met with the local Governor to discuss the future of British Canada and the Principality, giving her assurance that no hostile actions would be taken on the part of Equestria against the British.

TmHQd.png

w5t67.png

As she was about to set out on her return to Canterlot, a royal message was delivered to her. It was great news indeed, but it made for a rather awkward moment in the Colonial headquarters of the British. The population of ponies in both Oregon and Washington was sufficiently large enough to warrant them being incorporated into the Principality as territories, and their names were changed to the more culturally and historically correct names of Everfree (Oregon) and Celestia (Washington)(2). After a small bit of awkward small talk between herself and the Governor, Celestia reaffirmed her commitment to not make any hostile moves on the British before departing for Canterlot. The letter mentioned the new policy focus' of the Government, enacted by Luna in her leave.

bY9y9.png

re8KS.png

With a good deal of thought, Luna had decided to encourage settlers to make their homes in the unclaimed section of Idaho, declaring it to be not only in the best interests of the local Griffon population, but in reality it was more to gain the meager resources in the region. The Griffons of 'Idaho' as it was named were less open to the idea of being absorbed into the Principality however, and almost immediately violence flared up between settlers and native Griffons, first at the small settlement of Forrestville where a ragtag band of Griffons descended on the town at dawn and proceeded to set ablaze the crops and many houses in the town before fleeing as local militia finally reacted to the violence. And second, on a path to Pocoltello, a caravan of Earth pony settlers was ambushed and a pitched fight ensued between Griffon and pony, leaving 13 Earth ponies slain and 3 Griffons dead. Realizing the mistake of the policy, Luna would quickly order an army into the territory to keep the peace between the two species while settlers could be brought in. Aside from colonial matters, new laws were passed in the small urban state of Manehatten-Fillydelphia that greatly eased the normally restrictive and stifling laws on entrepreneurial pursuits that had for so long made it nearly impossible to own or operate a business or factory in Equestria, the hope was to jump start the middle class by empowering their economic freedom. In the hopes that starting one would lead to a chain reaction, Luna ordered the spending of 6,800 Bits from the royal treasury to fund the very first modern factory in Equestria, a clothing factory started by Canterlot Clothing Ltd., a new firm just recently founded by some of the newly christened 'Capitalists'

hrn7S.png

nTQfg.png
qDkfu.png

As 1837 dawned on the Principality, a few things had gone well for it, and at least for now, nothing terribly bad had befallen it. The army had been increased to a standing force of nearly 66,000 soldiers, all lead by at least mostly competent Commanding Officers recruited from the nations only war college, the Equestrian Military Academy in Canterlot. The navy remained at a meager 4 ships, although it wouldn't be very long before the shipyards finished producing the new Men-o-war ordered at the start of '36. Celestia hoped and wished that the army would remain simply a showpiece for the nation, never actually needing to be utilized. She feared that warfare would have a disastrous effect of the psyche of the nation, seeing as no pony had seen much in the way of modern, bloody, warfare. She knew that to help prevent such an event from coming to pass she would need to make Equestria great enough as to discourage any nation from attempting to fight it.

XKzoO.png
wO81q.png

The close of 1836 brought an update to the national census, which was now heavily altered due to the integration of the Griffon lands, as well as the acceptance of Springdale as a state right on January 1st of 1837. The changes to the overall population were highly noticeable on the census in not only in terms of overall population which had increased by nearly 200,000 with the incorporation of the Griffons, but in the labor make-up of the nation as well. With the advent of the factory, ponies began to sign up and look for jobs that would put them in the city which was traditionally where wealth was centered, so suddenly nearly 6% of the population had been hired or found jobs as one kind of Laborer or another. The fundamental racial make-up also changed, The three races remained relatively close to each other, Earth ponies maintaining a 10% lead on the others, but Griffons made up a full 6.2% of the population now, and their ideologies also changed the political shape of the nation. Though voting was forbidden in any governmental position, the number of ponies identifying as 'Liberal' nearly doubled at the cost of the 'Conservative' respondants, and the Royal Advisors Council was shifted in an attempt to appease some of the Liberal ponies. 1836 went well, 1837 looked to be shaping up as a good year for the Principality of Equestria.

(1) In the USCA, the treaty was called 'El Ecuestre-Centroamérica Acuerdos' Or the Equestrian-Central American Accords' but many who were unnerved by the prospect of allying with the nation of ponies referred to it as 'El tratado de caballos locos' or the Treaty of insane ponies.

(2) In reality, there was no historical name for the region now called Celestia, some Griffons took to calling the area they inhabited Talos, however, the name did not seem to be fitting of the mantle of state name, so it was ignored.

1837

The year 1837 began with a tremble, at least for most of the Earth ponies in the states containing precious metals that were deemed valuable enough for a mine. On the 6th of January 1837, the first successful fully mechanized mining contraption was completed and tested to satisfactory standards in the Iron rich hills on the edge of Sugarville, Valmansas. The machine was approved as successful and many were ordered to be constructed in the foundries of Stalliongrad so that mining could be standardized and production would rise greatly. Seeing the implementation of new and extremely useful industrial technologies that would give Equestria the edge it needed to survive and even thrive gave Celestia a brief moment of joy in the otherwise hectic duties of ruling Equestria.

2hbOs.png

It was decided between Celestia and Luna that the Royal Scientific Organization should go about independent research, seeing what could be discovered of use without any kind of quota or goal set, the hope was that without a goal in mind some of the scientists and philosophers might discover any sort of great item, or make a great realization about the state of the world and the things in it. The most promising project was one of a group of 4 artists, who were in the process of trying to find the best and most tasteful way to emulate the idealistic and glorious way of life that existed in old Equestria, a sort of 'Classical' art form where the art would be more restrained and formal as to attempt to convey the stability of the past.

ypOlL.png

In a move to re-organize the military along a more standard model that might ease the movement of forces, and generally make the resupply and rearmament of armies a simpler task in the future, two excess armies were disbanded in order to make way for the more standardized force that was to come. The main plan was to have state-centered armies of give or take 15,000 troops who were to be mostly Infantry, made up of 5 Regiments. Each state was planned to have a standing army which would ideally put the Royal Equestrian Army at a standing strength of 45,000 ponies with a reserve of around 100,000 able body ponies ready to be called up via draft if the need ever arose, and Celestia and Luna alike both wished it never would. By the start of August, the new ships had been successfully constructed in Canterlot, Manehatten and Fillydelphia and sailed to the port in Canterlot where they were brought into the Royal Fleet which bolstered it's strength to 4 Men-o-war and a supporting group of 3 Frigates.

Pride of the Royal Navy, the RENS (Royal Equestrian Naval Ship) Equestria

To continue the year, Celestia called upon the British ambassador, Sir Henry Fox, to join her and her sister for discussions at the palace in Canterlot. The talks covered a wide spectrum of issues, from the settlement of the Northwest by Equestria, to the war that the British found themselves in with the French over the Dutch colony in Guyana, a rather silly affair according to the ambassador, as well as the continental war between France and the rest of Europe basically over Alasce-Lorraine. The talks ended well, with Sir Fox reporting back to the Foreign Office that the new nations was 'Rather delightful...a really quite dandy place with a model of government on the American Continent, save for the odd species...'. Considering it a success, Celestia again made a trip to Mexico to see the new president, recently installed after Jose Corro was toppled in a coup planned by the military. He was named Anastasio Bustamante y Oseguera, and he proved to be a rather totalitarianist ruler, instituting a rudimentary secret police while the war with Texas was still going, albeit nearly to a close. He was open to the idea of cooperation with the Principality, and again Celestia gained valuable face time with the Mexican elite, again figuring that Anastasio would be gone perhaps in the next month or two.

JapZG.png

Anastasio_Bustamante.jpg

To continue the year, and to seemingly add to her troubles, Celestia was approached by a small group of the political elite in Canterlot, proposing the enfranchisement of the nobility and the elite. The proposal was initially denied by Celestia with an angry rebuke, returning to her castle to think and converse with Luna. After a supposedly heated debate with her royal sister, Celestia was convinced to change her mind and allow at least the voting of those who made over 50,000 bits a year and also own property to vote. This exempted nearly all of Equestria from casting a vote and left the total number of ponies eligible to vote in the elections at barely 30,000~ ponies. Although an extremely small portion of the population (Read, .01% of the population) Lune felt that this was a proper start on the path to an equal nation where all Ponies, Griffons, and Buffalo would be equals and exert the same influence over the nation. Though she didn't tell Celestia the real reasoning behind her support for the move, it worked none the less and a rudimentary set of laws was written up that day by the group of nobles and aristocrats enshrining their rights while still allowing Celestia and Luna almost total control. The document, titled 'Of Laws Regarding the Governance of Equestria' is regarded as the foundation of the democratic movement in Equestria and was lauded by many western nations still upset over the immigration ban of '36.

7jww6.png
ejOmU.png

As if to make things worse, Mid-February brought with it the winds of Liberalism in force. 'The Springtime of Nations' as it was called in Europe arrived in Equestria and quickly took hold of the liberal Earth pony majority. The effect was not a good one, Earth ponies took to violence more often then not in the pursuit of a fair system of government at the expense of the Royal Sisters. Alarmed by this militant wave of liberalism, Celestia took action, stationing the military in most Earth pony centers of population including Stalliongrad, Manehatten, Fillydelphia, and Baltimare, ready to quell any potential violent uprisings at the hooves of the so called 'Jacobins'. Extremist or not, the Liberal cause had a voice of reason at it's head, the shy and oft pushed aside mare known as Fluttershy was chosen to represent the less militant branch of the Liberals, the Concordia Party as they had taken to calling themselves were the peaceful movement, seeking to have their issues redressed and to have the enfranchisement of all ponies as the number one issue to the government. Celestia was pleased for a moment to know there were still peaceful and reasonable ponies in Equestria, despite it seeming like most ponies were going crazy. The movement espoused a liberal monarchy, where the sisters still excersized a majority of the control over the nation, but a congress, or something like it would be able to hold them at least partially responsible for their actions and would be able to set their own policy for the nation with the princess' approval or a majority vote of those elected.

qpKTE.png

Out of the seemingly bleak see of bad news came a bit of good though, the group of 4 artists from earlier in the year had managed to perfect the new form of art, called Classicism, it focused on static, mostly calm scenes of importance, where restraint and formality were the main focus of the new artwork style. The new art form was a hit around the world, with Equestrian Classicist art displaying pre-eminently across the globe and a few pieces even made quite a splash at the Louvre. The prestige the Principality gained from the

The Royal Scientific Organization was now tasked with improving the infrastructure of the nation, they were to attempt to develop a basic system of railroads that might ease the growing amount of ground traffic and allow for a more speedy means of transporting industrial and raw materials throughout the country without the sluggish pace and hassle that went along with basic Earth pony pulled transport. Not only would it ease the commercial and industrial issues of the growing state, it would be a boon for the military, allowing quick deployment and rapid response to any threats that presented themselves to the Principality. The benefits were too great to ignore and all efforts were made to research and implement the railroad system.

6K68O.png

The end of 1837 brought perhaps the greatest piece of news that would ever arrive at Celestia's court. The nations of the world no longer considered Equestria to be a mongrel state of strange animals who learned how to speak and reason, but a legitimate power in it's own right and a great one at that even. The Principality had managed to propel itself onto the world stage as a powerful nation of knowledge and reason, if not free government.

Never expected I'd see an AAR like this. I will be following this with great interest.

1838

1838 started off well, as most years in the Principality went, with the granting of Royal Statehood for the desert region of Valmansas, directly on the first of January. This was a great boon for Equestria, as statehood meant that industrial laws and regulations for the nation as a whole now applied in the area and state government would now be much more compliant to the central government in Canterlot. Population permitting, A state army would soon be raised in the area, most likely to be stationed in either Salt Lick City, or Appleoosa, that was as of yet not determined. Industrialization would be slow in coming to the sparsely populated desert region, but with time the mechanized means of business would make their way into the state.

UJUuW.png

In March, the portion of 'Idaho' that was the target of a focused settling campaign by the Principality finally reached ample population to warrant the granting of territorial status. Again, the Griffons were more then a bit perturbed by the fact that they were bring forcefully yanked into the Pony nation but for the most part violence was low and the colony seemed mostly calm. Of the barely 15,000 inhabitants that called Idaho home, perhaps something like 5% or less were actually ponies of any race however, so for the time being the Griffons would still have a fairly large voice in the running of the territory. The claiming of the rest of Idaho did lead to a bit of tension with the US, who claimed that due to their control over the northern portion of the region, that it was their right to own the rest of the territory. Celestia however, brushed off the American complaints, feeling confident that America would not go to war over the small chunk of mountainous land.

Perhaps the greatest advance in terms of technology was the development of a working railway system in 1838. Though small in scale and limited in capacity, the potential for growth on the small coal powered system was endless. A new Royal decree announced the creation of a government organization in charge of handling nearly all railroad based matters, the Royal Equestrian Railway Service which set about with the immediate ordering of a track to pass from Trottingham in the south to Ponyville in the center of the nation, with stops in Stalliongrad and Mareposa along the way. Optional routes for expansion were also created, and when supplies permitted along with technology and method, more regions would be brought into the fledgling railway system. The choice was made to ignore a route going through the Everfree Forrest for the time being, as most workers were frightened of the area, and it was doubtful that the local wildlife and fauna would be supportive of the effort either.

With the new railroad system being put in place, the Royal Scientific Organization was tasked with a new target. In cooperation with the Royal High Command, they were to attempt to develop a more efficient means of reloading or stocking ammunition in small arms, namely infantry rifles which at the time were slow to load and highly inaccurate Flintlock rifles mostly imported from Britain dating back to the Napoleonic Wars. The need to be prepared militarily was always an issue to Celestia, who felt that other nations constant need to develop more powerful and industrial forms of warfare was cornering her and by extension Equestria into following suit for fear of being ruined in a war later on. Point being that the military and scientific communities of Equestria were for the first time in cooperation, which was for nearly all involved, a totally new experience that may have. As a follow up to the military research, one of the nations main industrialists, Whirring Cogs, had perfected a method of industrial scale production of large caliber field artillery pieces, simplifying the creation and fielding of army support weapons.

Following up on the repealing of the old stifling laws in Manehatten-Fillydelphia, Celestia issued a decree altering the national tax rate. Before this point the standard rate was a flat 60% tax regardless of income, wealth, standard of living, ect. and it seemed to be working rather well. In the hopes that the shift might induce some form of capitalism however, Celestia reset the rates so that those making over 50,000 bits would only need to pay in half of their valid income to the central government, while those who made less the 50,000 would need to register and pay at least 75% of their income unless granted a royal exemption from a local tax collector(1). The squeeze placed upon the lower classes was felt quickly as the average wealth of the nation dropped, albeit slightly, but enough to be noticed with alarm by Royal Economists at the court in Canterlot, although most did not make any moves to issue a warning or anything of the sort(2).

zESd0.png

More good news came out of another one of the Equestrian territories, this time Everfree, directly to the north of Valmansas and Northern Equestria. The territory initiated a striking land reform that eases the normally difficult process of acquiring plots of land on which to establish homes, farms, towns, etc. The initiative was titled 'The Everfree Territorial Land Plot Reform' (3). The report of the success' of the plan was allowed to be reported on in the state press and capitalists across Equestria felt pleased as punch that their productivity and investment had lead to a rousing success already. If anything the success of the land reforms made more capitalists seem to feel a bit more entitled to rights and privileges, a silly notion, but it was there none the less.

QI1sW.png

There was also another fundamental shift in Equestrian politics in 1838. Though it wasn't a tangible feeling, quantifiable by any sort of data, the overall feeling across Equestria had seemed to calm. Violence based on political ideology practically disappeared, and those who had previously taken up arms in pursuit of reforms and liberalism either simply gave up on the matter or shifted into the peaceful sphere of political lobbying via the Concordia Party. Though still considered illegal, Celestia wouldn't bring herself to excersize the full extent of the law on the peaceful protests that were staged by Fluttershy and the rest. Not prosecuted at the government level did not mean the movement was safe from local retribution, on more then one occasion peaceful meetings and marches by the Concordia party were descended upon by vengeful Unicorns and Pegasi, occasionally assisted by right wing earth ponies, all of whom were bent upon stopping the spread of the 'liberal menace' one way or another. Most of the agitation took place in Northern Equestria, where the state governor was apt to simply send out the Royal Constables and then act as if nothing had occurred when reports of brutality surfaced. The rebellions across Europe met similar fates, although the use of arms and bloodshed were much more common in France and Germany, whose peoples were tired of the long war still being fought between the two. In France, a short lived Commune was declared in Nantes, which lasted only a week before French forces quashed the rebellion with incredible loss of life among the rebels. Meanwhile, across the German states, liberal students rose up and espoused for the formation of a German nation, Hesse-Kassel, Nassau, and Bremen were all overtaken by the wave of unrest and the students and workers were pressing onto neighboring states when Prussia and Bavaria stepped in and dissipated the infant movement, Prussia so it seemed, would only allow the formation of a Germany where it held the reigns.

FqgkN.jpg

Diplomatically, 1838 was the year that the United States was determined to be the main rival of the Equestrian state for years to come. Out of the Central American States came a letter to Celestia, filled with angry questions and implying the there had been support from the Principality to the Guatemalan rebellion of 37'. Taken aback by the accusations, Celestia sent her Royal Adviser on Foreign Affairs, Chamomile Drink (4) on a diplomatic outing to Guatemala City in an attempt to sooth over the incident. When she arrived at the office of President Francisco Morazon, there was a rather awkward moment as she entered the office to find American Secretary of State John Forsythe in the middle of a rant about the dangers the expansionist state posed to all of the western hemisphere. After finishing his tirade, Forsythe stormed out of the office, barely noticing the small white ponies presence as he hurried off. During the nearly hour long talks between Chamomile Drink and Francisco, relations between the two nations seemed to be soothed out mostly, however, the ever present influence of the United States would make maintaining a good relationship a challenge. The United States would take any friendly move by the Principality as a grab for influence, the world of international politics was one where it seemed friendship had little sway, and fear mongering and lies were the preferred means of advancement. The main concern from that point on was the general distrust of the Principality by its two major neighbors, the USA and the British.

(1) Equestrian tax collectors were given the authority to act on the royal sisters accord, so they acted independently in the best interests of their district.
(2) It's a bit useful to note that all economists were Unicorns that fell in the wealthy rating, so they were none to prone to tell Celestia to alter the policy.
(3) The reform was lauded, but in reality it simply took land already taken by Griffons and forced them off, then after a period of a few weeks the land was resold out to pony settlers who were unaware of the lands ill gotten means.
(4) It should be noted that Chamomile Drink was an Earth pony, and a royal adviser at that. The fact that she was as well of as she was is quite an accomplishment in its own right.

Hmm, interesting.
Given I worked on the most recent release of this mod, I'm going to be watching closely.

The United States is up to its old tricks, but the revolution seems to have passed without too much trouble. I guess you didn't get the event that makes all the Unicorns reactionary and all the Earth Ponies liberal, given you still have a majority conservative population.

Also, how did you change the names of the Idaho provinces without controlling the entire state?

/shrug
No idea, they were already set to that name when I went to colonize them...for some reason now they are named normally though...I just kind of accepted it without much thought.
Thanks for following though, any feedback is appreciated, and if and when the Zebra nation is added I may have to restart, no problem though, It'd be neat.

1839

The year of 1839 was a quiet one, comparatively with the other years the Principality had been though. Internationally the year involved the first major diplomatic campaign by the Principality in an attempt to sway other nations in Europe. Chamomile Drink was sent on a trip to Europe to hold a set of meetings with first the Dutch Secretary of State, Gerrit Schimmelpenninck, in the great city of culture, Amsterdam. Talks were to involved potential commercial concessions and the potential investment of Equestrian capital for the purpose of building factories and expanding the Dutch industrial base. The meeting was to be followed by a rush trip to Copenhagen to confer with the Danish kings royal minister for foreign affairs, Frederik Markus Knuth, on naval agreements and possible cooperation in military training and drill. Both trips went off well, Gerrit agreed to allow the investment of Equestrian monies in Dutch industry in exchange for allowing a small Dutch customs house to be constructed in Manehatten, the so called 'Dutch-Equestrian Concessions' (Nederlands-Equestriaanse Concessies). In Denmark, Mr. Knuth accepted a small, non-binding naval cooperation treaty stipulating cooperation on naval research and training methods, The Danish-Equestrian Naval Agreement (Den Dansk-Hestesport Naval Aftale).

Back in America, Celestia worked personally to ensure that Equestria's neighbors were able to be on at least a cordial state. Her first task was the sending of a congratulatory telegram to the British, lavishing upon them praise for their colonial empire that most recently included the massive continent of Australia. The telegram was received cordially by the British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Viscount Palmerston who sent back a gracious response insuring the status quo with the Principality for the foreseeable future. This was a start in British-Equestrian relations, which until now had remained admittedly chilled in the aftermath of the Immigration Law, and the settlement of the Pacific Northwest. Aside from the British, Celestia made a point to issue a statement of support for the Mexican state again, as was the normal routine now. The current leader, Formerly deposed Antonio López de Santa Anna of the battle of the Alamo, seemed more able to maintain his political position and so Celestia was now willing to talk with more long lasting goals with the Mexican despot. A short dual announcement of support, agreeing that neither nation would interfere in the others affairs without the express permission of either government was signed, 'The Mutual Non-Interference Agreement' (Mutuo Acuerdo de no Injerencia)

sLG04.png

Following the agreement with the Dutch, Celestia opened the royal treasury and began investing in foreign economies, Initially the plan was simply to construct a small industrial complex in the Netherlands, specifically the state of Friesland in the northeast of the country a liquor distillery under the ownership of Flim and Flam Brothers Beverages Inc., and other factories were to be opened in two other nations. One factory was planned for the Zacatecas region in Mexico, in an attempt to further prove Celestia's goodwill and intentions toward Mexico, it was cement factory under the ownership of the state industry company Equestrian Royal Manufacturing. A bit of a surprise was felt when Celestia announce the further construction of a clothing factory planned for the Sao Paolo state in Brazil, which until now was untouched by Equestrian influence. Canterlot Clothing Ltd. was to invest the majority of the funds and goods required for the venture, but royal support was granted and a maximum support fund of 75,000 bits was allotted as emergency funds should the need arise. Aside from international investment, Celestia ordered for the immediate funding of a Clothing factory in Canterlot, the home of Canterlot Clothing Ltd.

DWzRn.png

In the off time while Celestia held court with the small Parliament, a proposal was put forward by some of the more reactionary members of the house. The proposal was for a penal colony to be constructed in one of two places. Either Azazel's Atoll off the coast of Fillydelphia, or somewhere in the mountainous regions near Forrestville. The highly conservative house was for the proposal nearly 93-7. Only after Celestia heard many of the reasons for their support, finding them severely disgusting and detrimental to her sensibilities. Finally in an angry tirade, she denounced the Parliament and decreed that due to their lacking moral values, and the betrayal to the feelings of friendship and harmony, she would be dissolving the Parliament and that new members would be elected with previous members barred from re-entry.

fk3CC.png

KyOB3.png

Militarily, the only changes made during the year of 1839 was the ordering of three additional Ship of the Lines, to be built across the three major port towns of Equestria, Fillydelphia, Manehatten, and Baltimare.

1840

1840 got off to a great start, as throughout the year more diplomatic missions were undertaken, including the opening of the first even official Equestrian embassies, one in Mexico City, and the other further south in Guatemala City. Relations with the southern neighbors had never been better, and the opening of embassies was reciprocated by the USCA as well as Mexico, which had seemingly stabilized under the grasp of Santa Anna. Further diplomatic ventures included the signing of a three-way trade agreement with Mexico and the USCA, stipulating that any and all commercial ventures would be subject to a single, unified tax rate regardless of which nation they functioned in(1). Perhaps the single greatest diplomatic feat pulled off by Celestia however was the solidifying of a legitimate military defense pact with Denmark, building off of the previous agreements that were already in place from 1839. The Danish king, Christian VIII was surprisingly receptive to the military agreement, holding a personal court with Celestia where the terms were discussed and agreed upon, at the close of which Celestia declared that Denmark may be the single happiest nation in Europe.

fwVyX.png

A little later in the year, rumors trickled back to Equestria that Russia may have launched a botanical expedition to their colony of Yakutat, and the idea was proposed that an Equestrian expedition could be formed and dispatched in the hopes that they might discover some kind of great plant that may alter knowledge of the botanical world permanently. A royal decree was issued announcing the creation of the Royal Equestrian Botanical Society, a branch of the sisters own Palace Botanical Service, which was to be headed by the ever curious Twilight Sparkle, normally involved in research with the Royal Scientific Organization. With great vigor and much personal oversight, Twilight quickly formed a thriving service and had an expedition of herself and five other ponies(2) equipped and prepared at the docks in Manehatten to set out to the Russian colony. Celestia herself wished her favorite student luck at the docks, along with many other notables from Equestria, and the other five Elements of Harmony, all wishing their friend best of luck in her endeavors.

iNql9.png

As Twilight's departure faded in importance, the second elections were held in Equestria under dubious circumstances. The results were practically guaranteed to end favorably for the Conservative and Reactionary forces in government. The fact of the matter was it didn't matter what statements the government issued regarding any issue, for the majority of the voting population(3) was extremely conservative, even to the point of reaction-ism, despite the fact that there were no actual liberal changes in Equestria so far. The election came and went, and the government issued statements knowing full well they would have little to no effect upon the outcome, and right they were. As the election came to a close, the Conservative party, called the 'Moderates' was to head a coalition with the the Imperialists, taking a combined 99.81% of the vote. Some may cry foul at the figure, but the fact of the matter is that the Equestrian nobility, still highly conservative and reactionary, were in 1840 the only ponies with proper enfranchisement.

7BZrE.png

ccjjp.png

Continuing the trend of investing royal bits into other national industry, the Royal sisters okay'd the expansion of Equestrian industrial building the spread into new countries, previously neutral if not slightly hostile to the Principality. Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, and Belgium were all the scenes of great construction projects as factories were opened via Equestrian Royal Manufacturing. Very few of these countries were the spot of foreign competition however, as only Portugal and Belgium had any sort of non-Equestrian foreign capital invested, and in both it was in the form of 10,000 British Pounds invested in small Cement factories. All of the nations seemed for the most part willing to accept the foreign investment, albeit some were a bit more skeptical then the others, namely the Swiss, who had never had contact with the Equestrians. At first meeting the Head of Foreign Affairs is said to have been frozen with shock for the good part of 15 minutes while Celestia waited patiently for him to recover.

1840 brought other great news to the Principality. Working constantly, and after many mind boggling setbacks, three scientists and one of the Royal Chief's of Staff, a Unicorn by the name of Imperial Gullion, finally managed to test and perfect a working muzzle loaded rifle. Although it was admittedly still a flawed weapon system that was dreadfully slow to reload, the Equestrians had it on good authority(4) that non of their neighbors save for the British had developed similar weapon systems yet. To follow up perfectly on the development of the new weapon, Whirring Cogs had managed to adapt his production method for artillery pieces to the small science of ammunition production, meaning that when the Royal Army was finally equipped with the modern weapon, ammo would be no problem to acquire. Hopefully the new rifle would be more of a deterring factor against the United States, who had recently become more draconian on the matter of slavery(5).

zJnVu.png
QKcPg.png

qSHox.png

Focus was then shifted back into the civilian aspect of research, with the RSO tasked with discovering a simpler method of producing goods in a factory based enviroment. Although a rather broad goal, many figured that sooner or later Whirring Cogs would figure it out anyways, as he was the countries number one industrial thinker and planner. For the most part the Royal Scientific Organization went into thinking about more existential matters, simply leaving the research for the nations industrialists to figure out sooner or later.

lnETl.png

Contrary to most nations of the time who had run up huge debts and as such went bankrupt at the hands of greedy foreign investors, Celestia made a point to avoid foreign debt. As such, in 1840 the Equestrian budget was well in a surplus, and they had in fact given a few loans out, namely to the Danish who's recent naval expansion had been costly to say the least.

Rr2UZ.png

1840 also brought with it the completion of another national survey. For the first time in four years a comprehensive write up had been collected on the population and it's many jobs and ideals. The total population now stood at 3,030,000 million, an extremely large population for most modern nations, comparable to that of the Ottoman Empire and the Austrians. The main shift and difference between the Austrians and Ottomans was the shift to industrial production. While the Austrians and Ottomans struggled to transfer out of agrarian and simple hard labor jobs, the Equestrians managed to construct and employ nearly 1.5% of the able bodied population in the manufacturing and industrial aspect of the economy. Farmers, Artisans, and Laborers still took the majority of the jobs with nearly 92% of the population still working in one of the basic fields of labor. Soldiers and Teachers (Clergy) each made up about 2.2% of the population, a troubling fact to Celestia who favored knowledge over warfare. The overall balance between the three main races remained much the same, with Earth ponies retaining a slight lead over the other two races. While Griffons clocked in at around 6% of the population, which surprised most everyone. The other shocking fact was the revealing that based on the voting requirements, only about 21,000 ponies were able to vote, and at that, 82% of those able to vote were Unicorns, a very disturbing fact to many of the Earth pony and Pegasi races.

(1) The rate was set to be the Equestrian rate, due to all three nations being mostly conservative. 75-75-50 across the income board.
(2) The team was made up of 3 other Unicorns, a pegasi, and one Earth pony. Twilight swears the team wasn't made out of favoritism toward Unicorns, but that only a very small number of non-unicorns had the strenuous knowledge pre-requisites.
(3) The voting population was again at this point, all extremely wealthy, upper class unicorns for the most part, and as such they remained firmly in favor of strict laws on the lower classes.
(4) A note dropped at the Equestrian consulate in DC had a few small notes about the current US military, and Celestia took the note as fact without putting much thought into it

1841

The year of 1841 passed rather uneventfully in Equestria, with not much of note taking place. The calm was only occasionally shifted the the foreign missions still bring undertaken by the Royal Foreign Office. In the interest of expanding the number of nations and peoples who were more acceptive and supportive of the Equestrian nation, continual efforts were made to further bring many smaller, civilized nations into some form of understanding wherein mutual support and cooperation could be had in the event of any sort of diplomatic issue, or even simply in the name of expanding the standard of living and overall greatness of said nations. In an effort to foster such roots, Chamomile Drink held an Iberian summit of sorts, inviting Spanish Foreign Minister Carmelo Federico De Santigo and his Portuguese counterpart Cezar David Coelho to a meeting in the Spanish town of Corunna. Talks were mostly informal, as the two humans tried to reconcile their sensibilities to the reality of the Equestrian race and nation. The only thing of significance to emerge from the summit aside from the acceptance of the concept of speaking, colored equines was a short announcement of friendship between the three nations(1).

JXD1T.png

Elsewhere in the world the general feeling toward the Equestrian Principality was more negative. Only in a few nations was the general feeling more then either ignorance and lack of knowledge, to hatred and despise. Most of the major European nations disliked Equestria without much pause, only Denmark and the Benelux were neutral if not friendly, and the Russians, Swedes, Austrians, and French all still maintained a certain degree of political boycott since the forbidding of human settlers and immigrants. Only through determined efforts at the hooves of Celestia and Chamomile Drink were the Danes and Portugese convinced that Equestria might not be as horrible a place as the other nations constantly raved it was. In America, the United States of Central America was considered by the other major nations to be in the Equestrian sphere of influence and as such mostly off limits for much diplomatic prodding, while Mexico wasn't there, but wasn't far from getting there either.

In the interests of further expanding the Equestrian investment in foreign markets and safely place more industry under government oversight, Celestia dismissed the current government, headed by the Moderates, and replaced them with a cabinet made up mostly of members of the 'Imperialists'. The first order of business was the construction of a factory set to produce clothes in the USCA state of Guatemala, which aside from making Francisco Morazon happier, it served to further Equestrian influence and raise the overall standard of living among the normally destitute Central American peoples. Internally, a new Fertilizer factory under the ownership of Apple Family Chemicals Inc.(2) was planned and granted royal approval to be constructed in the area near Manehatten. It was planned to be the largest factory in Equestria to date, and was expected to rival any other factory around the world.

(1) In English the treaty was titled 'A Triple Agreement on the Friendship of the Iberian Kingdoms and the Principality of Equestria' or in Spanish 'Un Triple en el Acuerdo de Amistad de los reinos Ibéricos y el Principado de Equestria' and in Portugese 'Um acordo Triplo sobre a amizade dos reinos ibéricos e do Principado de Equestria'
(2) The company actually was not owned nor operated by famed Earth pony Applejack, but by her younger sister Applebloom, who is said to have quite a knack for management as well as the development of agricultural chemicals and compounds. Her cutie is after all, a book with an apple on the cover next to a beaker of green liquid/
