Hey Guys I reckon I've almost got the hang of the combat system in Vicky 2 but I'm still completely stumped by guards. I get that they're better than regular infantry for an increased cost but are they so much better that I have to upgrade or can I get away with regular infantry? Are guards worth their price?
If you can afford them, then they are completely worth it. Affording them can be the harder part, especially with smaller nations.
Guards will roll over infantry witrh similer tech.
Guards will allow you to win wars by killing the enemy armies, and are a better use of your limited national soldiers.
Infantry is for the grinder, and makes excellent sense to use when you have oodles of non-national pops to throw into the grinder.
I use Guards when I expect to fight defensively (hang out in my own country, kill enemy armies, then march into their country) which is basically always, but when you're Britain you probably just want to swamp the enemy with Indian manpower.
You CAN win just as good with Infantry, since the AI builds guards 'historical' (that is the odd guard unit among heaps of normal infantry) so guard-only armies are no must.
Since Guards dish out more damage and take less they are, however, a great way to reduce the wear and tear on your manpower.
