Early in game, my units had the defense and sleep (do nothing until enemy is near) button.
Later the sleep button seems to be gone. I still see and can use the defense and special ability (such as spells), and rest (for the injured) buttons though.

Is this WAD? Maybe the sleep button only is there on basic, non-upgraded units, which I no longer have?

It's only there on full non-moved units... without any enemies in the vicinity...
Also someone mentioned you can use G to enable it even after movement (but still the enemy range limitation applies)...

Well, after some time (maybe after loading?) it isn't there for any unit, even for newly-tryined units in the capital with no enemy visible (theretically there could be an invisible enemy sent by the AI watching over my capital, but I consider that to be unlikely).
