I'm wondering why Canada only has cores on one state, instead of what it usually has in vanilla, aka today's borders.

I believe that represents Upper Canada. Later events bring about the Canadian Confederation (by adding in more Canadian cores) as we know it today (or they don't, depending on circumstances, in which case the dominions are released separately rather than all as one big entity). Before that there's Quebec, the Maritime Union (a proposed union of the eastern provinces which got replaced by the bigger idea of just lumping everything together with Canada), Newfoundland, and Columbia which could have been independent.

I see. Seems like a reasonable way of doing it. Though, I'd like to do a playthrough as Canada from the start, is savegame editing the only way I can get today's borders? What's the event ID of the one that makes Canada "big"?

If you want to play Canada at a relatively normal size for 1867, open the console as the UK and fire off event 44306 and event 44310. Take the first option in each and that will apply Canadian cores to Quebec and the Maritimes respectively (though neither is actually necessary). Then fire event 44315 to release Canada and away you go. The Rupert's Land purchase event will fire a few years later, and the British Columbia admission event a few years after that.
If you're just looking for a way to have the entirety of modern Canada released in 1836, then no. Canada did not exist at that time outside of the Upper Canada province. You'd need to create a unique decision to do that, or edit your save game.
Will The Rupert's Land Purchase and the British Columbia Admission fire if I do the same, just starting 1836?

The Rupert's Land Purchase will fire a few years after Canada exists, regardless of whether Quebec and the Maritime Union are part of Canada or not. British Columbia will fire its decision to join a few years after Canada borders it (so if you don't get Rupert's Land, you won't get British Columbia).
Alright, thanks for the assist.
