Chapter XXXII. Stationary Wars pt. 2

June 1, 1917
Due to the provocative actions of the German Empire, the United States of America decided to join the war against the Central Powers. However, the Americans do not posses a massive army, not just yet, but time is running against the Central Powers. Could this be a race that cannot be won? On the Western Front, the Entente managed to push Germany out of Compìegne but lost Amiens. The Eastern Front is unstable and the Russians have started a wave of counterattacks against the Germans. Romania still stands, and von Lettow-Vorbeck seems is heading back to the lands of German East Africa, leaving the Horn of Africa to the British to liberate.

Due to massive losses and the mindless offensives on the Western Front, large numbers in the French Army are not willing to go over the top anymore. This is indeed a major problem for the French, but perhaps the Germans could take advantage of the situation, if they only knew that's happening on the other side of the front. The French decided to make concessions before the situation would danger the whole Western Front.

On the 3rd of June the German Army continued its advance in Bessarabia. The city of Ismail is defended by only a handful of Romanian recruits. After just five days the Germans had succesfully battered the Romanian defences. Finally on the 9th of June the German army broke through the Romanian lines and victory was achieved.

On the 12th of June the German Army attacked Ploesti, a city north from Bucharest. General Mustafa Kemal Pasha joined the offensive alongside with the three Bulgarian divisions who had just fought in Ismail. Soon enough the reinforcements arrived in Ploesti. The King of Romania himself is leading the defense of Ploesti now. Mustafa Kemal ponders if he should join the attack against Brassó, northwest from Ploesti. At 5:00 on the 14th of June, Mustafa Kemal redirected his attack.

On the 15th of June Mustafa Kemal's forces engaged the enemy at Brassó. Twenty-one divisions in total are smashing the Romanian defenses, but will it be enough? A cavalry division arrived in Brassó on the 17th of June, boosting the Romanian defense a bit. By the 18th of June the Germans had lost the support of six divisions. But fresh German divisions joined the battle on the 20th of June. Victory is close! Finally on the 26th of June Brassó was liberated.

As expected, the Austro-Hungarians decided to help our war effort by sending the technology we are researching.

Being an island nation has its pros, but also cons. The unrestricted u-boat war has started to make progress, as Britain keeps losing supplies in the sea.

Still all quiet on the caucasian front!

My goodness! Which one will win? I think the Central Powers will have to do a huge sacrifice to win this war. Your pan turkic plans for the caucasian front are diverting divisions from the real "fuck-russia" front, the one the Germans and Austrians are fighting on. When Russia falls, put as many divisions to help the Germans at the western front as possible, yet keep holding the brits at suez.

These Russians need to collapse, and soon.

Have you considered pulling out Italy anytime US hordes show up? Quite shameful but, you see, you might keep any Russian territory taken either way since Redsism will explode there soon and no one will care about it.

Thou after all I don't really care that much how the war will look like. I'm really waiting for some nice post-war changes, revolutions, conclusions, etc. How will Ottoman state look like after all this madness, which might be even more interesting...

...since you already lost it, sire. None can stop Amerikaniyye Hordes :(

Time to break through the Suez Canal!

I don't, but apparently Ober-chan does! :-D

Never talk to me again, yu liberacci!

Yeah, go on and don't fear! It is the honour which allows us to live, let it kill us as well! Damn yu shabababa, save what you can and avoid the American Storm!

Thou most likely Yanks would land in Europe and in worst case just more Entente troops will show up in Egypt, still, end is inevitable. Save what you can :(

Chapter XXXIII. Caucasian Gamble

July 1, 1917
Romania still keeps holding as the German Army pushes Russia out of Bessarabia. King Ferdinand is starting to run out of options, but for now the Central Powers are not even near Bucharest. Meanwhile, the Ottoman General Staff is planning to try to push the Russians out of Caucasus once and for all. Field Marshal von der Goltz, confident that Ahmed Izzet can hold Suez until the arrival of von Falkenhayn (the former Chief-of-Staff of the German Army) on the 22nd of July, decides to join the Caucasian campaign for he has the most experience in rough terrain warfare. Von der Goltz left for Kars on the 1st of July.

Suez under attack!

Apparently the British intelligence has done its job; the Anglo-French Corps stationed in Port Said attacked Suez a few hours later after von der Goltz had dispatched. The Entente forces soon found out that the Ottoman defences were not easily broken. After a week of battle, Ahmed Izzet's troops are still holding the positions. On the 10th of July some of the cavalrymen were ordered to sabotage the British pontoon bridges during the night in order to slowen their further operations. On the 18th of July Ahmed Izzet orders the frontal garrisons to fall back to new defensive positions, hoping that this would buy him some time until von Falkenhayn arrives. On the 20th of July the reinforcements finally arrived. Von Falkenhayn's infantry division, and it's heavy machine guns, assured victory for the Ottoman Army. Suez shall never fall!

Greece joins the Entente

King Constantine I and Prime Minister Venizelos kept disagreeing on whether to join the war or not. The King's pro-German sympathies made him favour neutrality, but the Venizelos believed that joining the Entente would serve Greece's interests the best. When Venizelos' Liberal Party won the general election in the summer of 1915, the King refused to ratify the newly formed government. The following events lead to the dismission of Venizelos, who returned to his native Crete. However he returned to mainland Greece backed by the Entente, and their naval support, demanded the King to abdicate or else Athens would be shelled. Constantine left the crown to his second son Alexander, Venizelos then seized control of the government and an official declaration of war against Germany was passed in July. Another of the Ottoman Empire's enemies has joined the war.

In the beginning of July soldiers and workers arranged anti-war demonstrations against the Provisional Government in Petrograd. The Bolsheviks tried to gain a leader role in the demonstrations, but the Russian Army attacked the peaceful demonstration. Many Bolshevik leaders were arrested and for now the growth of Bolshevik power is declining. Over 700 people were killed by the soldiers.

After the recent events in Russia, Field Marshal Liman von Sanders, with Field Marshal von der Goltz, decides to take the risk and attacks Erivan. The Russian garrison of four cavalry divisions were taken by surprise and Enver Pasha is hopeful that the offensive will turn out to be a success. After a short bombardment the Ottoman forces attacked Erivan from all possible sides. The Russian cavalry could not reorganize properly and they were forced to retreat on the 13th of July.

On the 10th of July the Germans decided to try to take Ploesti once again. The Ottoman and Bulgarian divisions in the area joined the siege. But soon enough the offensive lost its spirit and the Romanians started to push the invaders back. By the 16th of July, the Central Powers could not continue their offensive and they had to pull back.

Since the stockpile of coal is so great, the Ottoman Cabinet decides to cancel the deal with China. The Ottoman army needs the supplies.

Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg had been the Chancellor of the German Empire since 1909. Almost in the same situation as Grand Vizier Said Halim, von Bethmann-Hollweg had frequently been outflanked by the military leaders in German policy. Eventually von Bethmann-Hollweg lost his power, which lead to his resignation in the summer of 1917. Georg Michaelis would be the next chancellor.

Despite the pre-war promises, Britain decided to hold her grip over India. Perhaps this will create sympathies towards the Central Powers?

On the 16th of July von der Goltz encountered two Russian divisions in Erivan. Von der Goltz commenced an assault, and the shock attack stunned the Russians, leading to the devastation of the Russian reinforcements on the 17th of July.

The treacherous Greeks! I knew this day would come! Can the Bulgarians attack the Greeks while simultaneously attacking the Romanians?
