South Africa - APD AAR

Welcome to my first Vicky 2 AAR. Inspired by many AARs here, among them: (California by Frymonmon‎ and both Japan and Dutch AAR's by Tanzhang)
I wondered if I could do one too? Well why not?
I'll be playing with APD mod, IIRC latest version. Kudo's for their great work. I edited two things, first for Natalia to be not under British Dominion, and 2nd you'll see for yourself :)
Started the game with Haiti until Natalia was formed, than switched.

First update coming up!

edit: I see that Commandant has already started an AAR and Fry is planning one, but this one will be a bit different. Both in style and story :)

The Creation of the Kingdom of South Africa
(Zuid-Afrikaansche Koninkryk)

Part One

Voorttrekkers
Voorttrekkers ware the Dutch-speaking pioneers that lived in Cape Colony. Literally "those who trek ahead".
The Cape Colony was established in 1652 by the Dutch but at the time of the Great Trek it was held by the English. The White Afrikaaners ware
discontented with the British rule and decided to leave and go further into the land.

The Great Trek
The Boers (Farmers in dutch) decided to settle the land in the north and North-east of Cape Colony. The first settlements ware on
the lands of Batswana near the Matebele tribe. Emigrants flocked in and soon dissensions arose between them. Some of the Voorttrekkers
decided to move on and they passed the mountain range Drakensberg into the land of the Zulu.
Under the leadership of Piet Retief a huge mass of Boers pioneers established a colony in Natal.
Retief obtained territory from the Zulu King Dingane in 1838 after he managed to bring back cattle stolen by the Tlokwa chief.

But The Zulu King Dingane had misled the Boers and he ordered them all slain the very next day. The Zulus clubbed the entire party to death
with Retief as last, to see his whole party die. Their bodies ware left to be eaten by wild animals. After the betrayal the Zulus attacked
other Voorttrekkers and killed over 600 of the Boers.

Hearing about the massacre, the English settlers of Port Natal decided to help the Boers. Together with some friendly Zulus and under the leadership of
Robert Biggar they attacked King Dingane. They ware unsuccessful and ware slain nearly to the last man. Those who survived left Port Natal and
went back to the Cape.

Battle of Blood River
Thankfully the Boers received reinforcements. Under Boer General Andries Pretorius they attacked the Zulus. Near the Umslatos River,
they attacked over 10,000 Zulus. The Boers ware outnumbered more than 20 to 1. Yet thanks to their artillery they won and killed
esteemed 3,000 Zulus (modern historians think 1,000 is more likely). The Zulus lost and withdrew through the river that colored red,
hence the name of the battle.

Establishment of Natalia Republic
The Boers returned to Port Natal only to find it in the hands of the British under the Governor of the Cape, Sir George Napier.
But the Voorttrekkers didn't bled and died just to come under British rule again. Andries Pretorius deceived the Govennor and the Brits left
a few weeks later, thinking they had gained new territory. But Pretorius wanted a free Boer state. He knew, soon he'd have to fight the Brits for it.
But first he had to take care of the natives. [*1]

Yay for South Africa! I am glad I am not the only inspired to write something as story-heavy as what Fry and Tanzhang write. I wish you good luck, and am sure this will be an interesting story.

Hmm, considering I almost did a South African AAR after my California one, this will be interesting to watch.

I pretty much have to follow this one don't I? :)

Congratulations on starting your first AAR hdk, and good luck against the Zulus!

The Creation of the Kingdom of South Africa
(Zuid-Afrikaansche Koninkryk)

Part Two - The Zulu allies

Andries Pretorius established the Natalia Republic in 1839. At the time the small republic had about 30,000 boer inhabitants.
After the battle of blood river the boers elected Pretorius their leader and they agreed that in 1944 they would have elections to elect their first President.
Within a year the new situation has been reported back in Europe. A Map was created to show people the new borders of the Boer Republic.

map2-1.png

Map of South Africa in the year 1840. From "Historical Maps of 19th century" by Martijn van Kerkhoff

Pretorius knew that soon the Brits would realize that he wasn't their vassal and they would come to Natal and take what is rightful Boer territory.
So be started preparations for it. First he needed troops. Within a year he had mustered a standing army of 2,000 Boers. But that was far from enough.
Hendrik Potgieter was sent to the old continent. The whole year of 1840 Potgieter went all around Europe announcing the creation of the new state of Natalia
He encouraged immigrants by promising every able hand free land to settle and to live from. Many answered his call. The year 1841 would go into History Books
as the year when hordes of immigrants arrived in Natalia.

lijst.png

List of numbers of immigrants to Natal in 1841. by an unknown author. probably Pretorius himself made it.

A list with the exact numbers of European immigrants was found just two years ago among files Pretorius left his son.
The population of white settlers in Natal rose with nearly 100% within that year. An enormous rise, but it didn't continue the next year.
Some immigrants would arrive later on but nothing close to the amount and significance to the immigrants of '41.
Most of Boers today have an ancestor that arrived in South Africa that year.

With the great immigration of 41, Pretorius had now enough manpower to arm another 1,000 soldiers. This time with artillery.
The same year Pretorius started building the Boer Navy in Port Natal. 2 transports and a Raider. The Raider was named after the nation, Natalia.
He ordered another 4 raiders and some transport ships to be build within the next few years.

dingane.png

Zulu King Dingane

New Zulu King
In August of 1843 an opportunity arose for Pretorius. Mpande the half brother of the Zulu King Dingane arrived in Port Natal.
He asked Pretorius to help him with overthrowing Dingane. Two months later the Boer Army together with their Zulu allies under Mpande
marched on the Zulu capital UmGungundlovu. On October the 17th the two armies clashed in the Battle of Ulundi.

battleulundi.png

Battle of Ulundi

Pretorius and Mpande ware victorious. The boers had their revenge. Dingane was dead and payed for his crimes.
More than that the Boers secured some very influential allies in form of Zulu's and their King Mpande.
From now on they could count on 8,000 of Zulus to help them out. Another step in securing their independence from the Brits.
But there was still much work to do for Pretorius.

------------
What happened ingame was that I created an conquest CB and conquered the Zulu's with my superior army.
Now I'll be able to use their troops so that precious Boer's won't die. (need them as I only have 30k Boers!)

You should take both the Xhosa and Basuto lands, and deny the English of more territory.

You should take both the Xhosa and Basuto lands, and deny the English of more territory.

hmm. I agree with you on Basuto. but why xhosa? will only cost me infamy. and I need to spare my infamy...for.... nearly spoiled it :) p

Well as long as you've got a connection to the sea, you should do better than the real world Boer States.

that I will. but for that I'll need good enough Navy to beat European powers, and faster than I anticipated.

update will be up today :)

The Creation of the Kingdom of South Africa
(Zuid-Afrikaansche Koninkryk)

Part Three - President Pretorius

Election Time
In the last part we talked about how Natalia Republic annexed the lands of the Zulu.
Pretorius returned home in 1844 just in time to start his campaign for the first President of the Republic.
There ware only two candidates. Pretorius himself and his Boer Partei and Hendrik Potgieter of the Voortrekker Partei.
The same Potgieter who traveled to Europe in search for new settlers 4 years back.
Pretorius was still very popular among the elites and now that he got the revenge of the Boers against Dingane it was a near walk over.
99,51% of the Burgers voted on Pretorius.

election.png

Election Results 1845

On the 4th of January of 1844 Andries Pretorius addressed Natalia Republic in Port Natal as the First President of the young nation.
In his speech he talked about further growth and the importance of armed forces to secure the Republics borders.
Sadly many soldiers didn't listen to him and 2/3 of the Boer army went back home to their farms. [*1]

War with Portugal
Two months later in March of 1845 Portugal declared war on the Natalia Republic. The borders of the republic and the Portuguese colonies had yet to
be accepted by both parties after the surrender of the Zulu's. Now the Portuguese wanted to humiliate the new republic and put it back in its place.
Pretorius had started his Presidency with a disaster. Or atleast thats how it all seemed at the time. For the President it was just another opportunity.
He sent his Zulu allies north into Mozambique to plunder and conquer anything Portuguese, but also to sign treaties with Tonga Chiefs.

The Boer army stayed back in Port Natal. The small Portuguese regiment was quickly destroyed and the Zulus ware conquering all their lands.
In June the Portuguese Navy arrived near Port Natal. With them 5,000 soldiers and 5 Frigates as escort. But Pretorius knew it was vital
that the Portuguese shouldn't land or otherwise they'd be doomed. The Zulu's ware thousands kilometers away and the Boer army was five times smaller.
Thankfully Boers anticipated the jealousy of other nations and constructed five new ships in the past few years. Five raiders, constructed with the help of the Dutch.
Under an former merchant Louis Theron (Huguenot immigrant) the five ships (Natalia, Eendrag, Afrika, Leeuw and Onoorwinlik) sailed to meet the Portuguese navy.

portnatal.png

Battle of Port Natal

Sadly Admiral Louis Theron died in the Battle. He died in an accident. He got stunned in confusion, fell off the ship and drowned. His body was never found.
But it was a huge victory for the Republic. An European nation, former lords of the seas ware defeated. Yet they persisted and didn't want to sign a white peace.
They planned their revenge and another attack.

The Basuto Crisis
The Portuguese weren't dealt with and yet another crisis occurred. In November of 1845 a delegation from Boers living in Basutoland arrived in Port Natal.
King Moshweshwe of Basutoland was attacking white settlers and killing them. The Brits wouldn't help them (and might have even helped Sotho people) so they turned to Pretorius.
The President of Natalia had a hard choice to make. He had to help his fellow Boers, yet his war with Portuguese was still going on.
He decided to stall it and declared war on Moshweshwe. He sent raiders to his Zulu allies to stop their advance and to come back to Natal.

King Moshweshwe was furious. He sent his whole army and marched on Port Natal. He knew Zulus ware far away. But Pretorius was not stupid.
He stayed behind his walls and didn't attack the Sotho army. Moshweshwe waited outside the Natal walls for months. Awaiting the arrival of the Zulu's.
But they never came. Pretorius didn't order them back to Port Natal, he ordered them to march on Sotho capital in Thaba Bosiu.
In August of 1846 Moshweshwe got news that his capital was razed by the Zulu's and that their army was advancing on him.
The Sotho King knew when to cut his loss, he signed a treaty declaring the territory where Boers lived to be now part of Natalia Republic.
The lands ware named Transorangia and added to the Republic. [*2]

Peace
After the short war with the Sotho, Pretorius was preparing his Navy for the next battle with Portuguese.
But it never came. Instead in march of 1847 a delegation arrived. The Portuguese declared they agree to cede Lourenzo Marques colony
to Natalia for Peace. They needed their navy in an another war. Their neighbors, the Spanish declared war on them.
And so finally peace arrived in Natalia.

-----------------------
*1 - What really happened is that in APD after I annexed Ulundi from Zulu's, my soldier pops got transported to the capital of the Province Natal (as in game files) and that is Ulundi.
As Ulundi wasn't my core province I could only recruit 1 Boer soldier.(despite having nearly 3k soldier pops) Thankfully I can recruit 5 Zulu Allies, otherwise I'd be lost :p
*2 I was already creating a CB when Portuguese attacked, so I had to declare war on them or I'd lose the CB and I didn't want that as I needed those lands. It was easier
and cheaper to get them like this than fighting Orange Vrystaat later on aswell. Btw I really did trick them, as they ware sieging my capital I quickly sieged theirs and I was done earlier so they accepted my peace offer.

Epilogue

The Creation of the Kingdom of South Africa
(Zuid-Afrikaansche Koninkryk)

Part Four - South Africa

Transorangia
With the addition of the Transorangia province to the Republic the amount of White settlers increased enormously.
And with that far more men ware available for call up into the army. Pretorius seized the chance and reformed the army.
In addition to the 1,000 Boer soldiers from Natal, another 3,000 Infantry and 1,000 artillery ware assigned to Port Natal.
Also the amount of allies increased. The Sotho chiefs in Transorangia agreed to send 3,000 men when Pretorius would need them. [1]

nataliamap.png

Map of Natalia Republic and South Africa in 1849.

Elections of 1849.
The last two years of Pretorius' First term as president ware peaceful. The country was growing in power.
The prestige gain from the two wars, the gain of a new province and the win against Portugal made Pretorius even more popular than he already was.
Especially to the soldiers of the Natalia Republic. The elites on the other hand ware getting scared of the ambitions of Pretorius.
Among them the leader of the Voortrekker Partei, Hendrik Potgieter. He claimed that the Brits would never allow them to be if they kept on expanding.
That soon the Brits would seize all their lands. And that ll their work would have been for nothing. Also they feared the warmonger Pretorius.
But they couldn't stop him yet. Pretorius won the election yet again by a landslide. His Second term as the President of Natalia started in July 1849.

Transvaal Republic
In January of 1850 the Republic of Transvaal formed. The second Boer country was located just to the north of Natal Republic.
The Tansvaalians decided that elections would be held in January of 1852.
Pretorius and his Boer Partei ware extremely happy with the creation of the new Boer Republic. Pretorius even proclaimed that he will run
for the President of Transvaal in 1852. The Transvaalians ware not very happy about it as they wanted to stay independent, but Pretorius' enemies
ware more positive about the news. They saw it as an opportunity to get rid of him. Especially as his second term ends in 1853.

The elections came and Pretorius won by a margin. His enemies would say that he lost and that all the followed was his own making. In truth we will never know.
The fact is that alot of people in Transvaal didn't accept Pretorius as their leader and they rose up. [2]
What followed is considered in South Africa as a small rebellion. But in truth Pretorius marched with his army into Traansvaal with his native allies where he destroyed the majority of
their army in one huge battle and conquered all 'rebel' cities.

battletransvaal.png

Battle for Transvaal

Second war with Portugal
Just as Pretorius was busy pacifying Transvaal, Portugal saw opportunity to discuss the borders and take back some land. They landed with 3,000 men in Mozambique and blocked Port Natal with 7 ships.
Pretorius stalled his actions in Transvaal and send his main army to Portugese colonies. Most of the native allies followed. In a small battle just outside Sena, the Portugese army was destroyed on 7th December 1852.
Back in Transvaal all their territories ware incorporated into the Natal Republic.

transvaalannex.png

Annexation of Transvaal
The war with Portugal lasted another seven months. Well war is the wrong word. After the Portuguese army got destroyed the Natalian troops went on conquering Mozambique, while the Portuguese Navy
lost another fleet off Port Natal. 26th of November the Portuguese signed a peace treaty. Natalian Republic gained the Sena colony.

sena.png

Gain of Sena Colony from Portuguese

Elections of 1853
There was peace yet again in Natal. The elections of 1853 ware going to start in December. But despite his huge popularity among Boers, Pretorius couldn't go for 3rd term.
The elections ware between Potgieter and Johannes Grobler. They ware even at start but Potgieter, the rival of Pretorius won on 22 December with 53% of the votes.
Pretorius was at the time officially back at his farm, but in truth he was in Sena Province where the Boer army was.
Potgieter announced that he wanted to undo what Pretorius did in 1853 and to give independence back to Transvaal.
Atleast thats what Pretorius said to his army, that his soldiers would lose their new land.

Crossing the Rubicon
Four days later Pretorius crossed the Save River with his army. Mostly loyal veterans of the many wars in the past years.
Within weeks they arrived in Port Natal. The troops later claimed that once they arrived at the Potgieter residence that his allies started shooting at
Boer soldiers loyal to Pretorius. Once they fired the first shot the soldiers had to defend themselves and in the fighting Potgieter was shot dead.

On 7th of March Pretorius declared the formation of South Africa. With the backing of the Dutch Kingdom, his army and due to his huge popularity he was offered the crown
of the newly formed Nation. A week later he was crowned King in Port Natal. There was peace yet again. But for how long!?
Not everyone was happy with Pretorius' absolute power. Within South Africa and outside.

-----------
*1 - I was greatly pleased by this, and surprised. The cores gave me alot of new troops. Troops I would need. :)
*2 - In game terms I just justified annexation.
*3 - Once I had Transvaal and peace, I could use the decision to form South Africa. For RP reasons I changed the government to a Prussian Constitutionalism.

In the next update The 1st Chapter will start. With all the statistics of the new Kingdom and a few maps of different things ;)

Awesome! Now incorporate those small blights in and to the south of South Africa and prepare for war with the British. After also seizing the rest of the Portuguese African colonies as well, of course... and why not Madagascar?

Not sure how exactly I feel about a Boer Kingdom of South Africa, considering a driving factor in their immigration away from the Cape in the first place was the fact that they didn't like monarchies.

But hey, good job so far, all the same.
