Thread: Customisable classes

  1. #21
Any insights into how much of an advantage a seasoned player will have over new players, via the classes / content unlocking? And what about speed of unlocking the extra content?

Oh - I just now realized who GordonVanDyke is! From the old Battlefield forums of course! I kinda now understand where many of the design decisions comes from! Thanks for 1943, 2142 and to a lesser degree - Bad company! Love those games, but BF 2142 is probably my favorite right after BF2.

I would love to know what sort of "work" you'd have to do to unlock equipment and perks. I mean is it kill-based? Some abstract XP-like score? and then how much of that are you going to need to unlock this stuff? I'm hoping for a nice balance where it isn't easy to unlock everything, but you'll not start feeling like you're grinding just to get at a certain perk.

What about a perk that allowed you to pick a primary as a secondary?
Over Encumbered - Allows main hand weapon to be selected in a primary slot, can't use heavy armour or ride a horse.

how many custom classes will you be able to have?

  5. #25
I would hope for a minimum of at least 4, (inf, cav, archer, crossbow,) but hopefully we can have as many as we want.

they had personal classes like double man and heavy hitler, i think it should be more open, you being just you and not the member of a class... your equipment and perks defines what you are.

So, changing topic, while unlocking new weapons you get stronger, how will the server pairing work? There will be different rooms limited by the level of expertise or a newbie will be condamned to die killed by uber-monstrum-powerplayers all the time?

    PS: newbie meaning me ...

Heavy Hitler? really? You sure you read that right?^^

What I was wondering, will it be possible to carry a shield AND a lance? Havent seen any proof for that yet, and Unmounted Knights seem to carry their lance like a spear/halbert with both hands, at least at the moment.

I think you missed my point. I wasn't saying there should be 4 set classes, I'm saying that I think there should be at least 4 slots for us to play with and make our own builds, (leaving us with the ability to make one of each class if we so choose.)

As for your question then I believe there will be some sort of matchmaking system. No idea how it will work though.

Ah, more than 4 i think, orelse, the possibility to save them out.

Unlockable perks are always a problem. I'd love to see a game mode where you have a limited set of pre-designed classes that you can choose from. Again, it would help the competitive community.
But as it stands, if a new player comes in a a couple of months after, or maybe even a couple of weeks after, you'll have many 'hardcore' players who have unlocked many more perks that WILL give them huge advantages over the newer players. Its a design flaw now with WotR, but with the whole unlockable perk system imo. I don't think it works for games like this, but the customization makes it worth it sometimes.

Its still very unfair to new players.

The perk and unlock system are very much a system of sidegrades. There will be components that unlock at levels and other were you choose what to unlock, but despite this you still have a very limited amount of slots for everything, so it should ideally more be a question of that a newer player will have less tactical options and styles to choose from, but whatever he chooses should still be competetive.

The main disadvantage new players will have will always be that they quite simply are not as good at the game. As long as I get my trusty pollaxe irregardless of armour I can usually easily take down 2-3 other players at once in the office tests quite simply because I've played the game (and M&B) and other pvp games a whole lot more than the average. I still get my ass handed to me when playing against the real pros (unless exploiting things that are OP because of rebalancing ), but that's a different story

Perfect! Thanks Robin - thats more or less what I wanted. Few games these days allow skillbased gameplay like that, but it fits perfectly into this type of game, and with the unlocks it makes even more sense.
For reference, check out new games like Dragon's Dogma that also uses this type of system - You can get a ton of extra abilities, skills and augmentations in it, but basically the first time you go up against a goblin, its quite dangerous. After you familiarize yourself with the game system though, with a lvl 1 character you are much much better and will never lose to the same goblin, due to your skills improving.

Anways - thanks for the speedy reply!

Np, glad to be able to clarify things.

Dragon's dogma does look really cool. If it'd have had co-op I'd have been all over that like a weasel in a chicken coop.

Good to hear how things will pan out and Robin you are pretty quick with your responses. Loving this developer - customer interaction.
I too would instantly buy Dragon's Dogma (if my PS3 was with me and fixed) if it had Co-Op. Sadly they didn't want to do it. Though the system they had in place is also quite interesting.

What about dual-wielding? I think it may have some disadvantage due to wielding two weapons at once.

Never thought about dual-wielding in a game like this. Would be interesting if they could implement it in one way or another. Did knights in the time period dual wield enough to get attention by devs?
