Title pretty much says it all - I'm interested in early oil production in and around Baku. Any suggestions for a book containing details about foreign investors, the companies themselves, and the political climate in the region would be excellent.

"The Prize" by Daniel Yergin is about the oil industry in general up to ~ 1992 and has sections about the development of Baku in the era of the Russian Empire. His book is extremely well sourced and footnoted, so if you borrow it from a library (or buy it which I highly recommend) then you should either find what you need, or be able to figure out what sources to track down. He touches on the roles of the French and other investors and the Rothschild family in financing, it's importance for tax revenue to the Czar, the political issues caused by the recent Crimean war, the issues between Russia and the Ottoman empire, the status of Azerbaijan within the empire, etc.Originally Posted by Cyrus_The_Great

I actually found it for free being given away by the local library a few years ago, and having only read a portion of it, just pulled it out again today. Appreciate you reminding me of it, the bibliography for that section contains several good sources.
