    research failed?

how to i know, when a research with - for example - 55% failed or not. Do i get a message, normally after the research would be completed or do i have to have a look onto the circle (when the yellow bar is making a second circle)?

and is it possible to stop a research and continue later - after researching another tech?

Why dont you just try it out? The answere should be: "Yes" for both questions.

    Hi ABuster,

If the reseach fails you will get a message a long the lines of "technology is beyond your scientists". Just let the research run until this happens to be sure of whether you will get the tech or not. Ignore the yellow circle thing, when it starts going round for a 2nd time then the research is over budget but you could still get the tech.

You can change research at any time and I don't think there are any penalties for doing so, so you can return to research projects at a leter date and continue from where you left off.

IIRC, interrupted tech, does SLOWLY degrade over time, so the longer you wait to getting back to it, the more research accumulated you will lose, but I have yet to lose it all before returning to it. Also be aware that although a tech might be "denied" to you, there may be other paths to getting it or push come to shove, you can take a Repair/Salvage ship with you and fight an opponent that has the tech you want and get it through "special projects".

Plus there are tricks you can use.

There are also some tricks you can use to get techs that you have a fairly low chance to succeed on. One trick I use to get tech I consider "essential" when I have a low chance is to pump through the first 50% of the research fast to get over the 50% mark, and then lower my research so that the time to go from 50% to 100%, takes a lot of turns. During this period you haver a chance for a breakthrough, so the more chances for a breakthrough you have, the higher chance you have of getting the tech that you might be denied from normal chances. So like the other night I only had a 35% chance at Fusion Torpedoes, and I had utterly failed on Photon torpedoes. I used this method and obtained them anyhow.

Science stations with Labs dedicated to that tech tree will slow the degradation of the accumulated research.
